I really like the Ghosts series. I've just finished Guns of Tanith and I think they manage to bring home the feel of the Guard in action to perfection. As I'm not a big fan of 'spin off' products this came as a big surprise. :)

When you finish Guns of Tanith you get the standard advert for the 40K game. It got me thinking just how bad a simulator of what I see as 40K realism the game actually is. Necromunda (and therefore the 2nd ed ruleset) seems just so much better at representing the Tanith on the battlefield, whatever the scale of the engagement. Granted it would struggle at higher point levels, but I really dislike the 3rd edition ruleset. The whole system was made too simple and then too much additional stuff was dumped into it, creating a real mess. The bias seems all wrong too. Even in the grim, war torn future, it shouldn't be more effective to hit some over the head with your bolter than to fire it at them. ??? I want to see vicious short range firefights, tactical manoeuvring and tanks king in the open/infantry lords in areas with lots of cover.

Also the Chaos forces in the game don't seem to portray the heretical forces of the Sabbat cluster. The Lost and the Damned just seem too mutated, Chaos Marines are just too elite and the Guard (taken as traitors) are just too organised/high tech. You really need a PDF style army with a few mutants, poor quality armour/support and corrupted citizenry.

GW are missing out here IMHO. I probably would have jumped at any half decent game where I could refight some of the battles described in the books. Maybe the state of 40K is a blessing in disguise then. I have too many GW games/armies as it is :{

Let there be no doubt, 40K rules are horrendous ! ?My friend and I comment on that all the time. It is a very "childish" game. But by the comments on the 40K sites, you'd think adults would have more sense ? ??? ?Close Combat "Rules" in 40K and that's what the kids like. And that's what sells ! ?Thank the Emperor, that most Epic players and the guys on this site are more "evolved" ! ? ?:laugh:

Let there be no doubt, 40K rules are horrendous !  My friend and I comment on that all the time. It is a very "childish" game. But by the comments on the 40K sites, you'd think adults would have more sense ?   Close Combat "Rules" in 40K and that's what the kids like. And that's what sell !  Thank the Emperor, that most Epic players and the guys on this site are more "evolved" !


Dude, dont even go there.

I thought 40k rules were bad way back in RT days and dumped them then. GW still is trying to convince players to fight "really big battles" in a scale appropriate for SKIRMISHES not battles, perhaps someday they will realize how bogus is the "UGOIGO" mechanic and finally devise a REAL set of rules with unit activation.

There were many aspects of the previous Ed. which I prefer.

If you fancy playing Gaunts Ghosts or what-ever, in a more in depth rule system, then as you say Necromunda would be a good system to use.

They have just updated and re-released the rule book for it, and I think maybe updating some of the models too.  I haven't got the Necromunda book myself.  I have thought about it, but there are too few players of the main games, by me already.

When the Ultimate Warzone comes out I'll probably just translate the 40k armylists for it and have fun.  :cool:

I'm in the process of developing a small scale game loosely based on 40k which represents skirmishes much better than 40k proper. I'm aiming for it to represent forces of 5 to 20 models in a sort special/covert ops setting. Its comming along quite nicely. I've just finished a demo/first draft (covering basic IG and Marines It doesn't include the full mechanics but hould give an idea of what I'm trying to do) If anyone is interested.

It was dissatisfation with 40k that kinda led to us getting together to write 'Dawn of Darkness'. Although the list has been silent for a while now, the rules were kinda exciting. Hopefully I will get an opportunity to test them at some point, although my life is so hectic at the mo that I haven't been wargaming in ages!

I highly recommend the Gaunts series too- I've just finished re-reading them all for the second time.

The character development throughout is excellent, as one would expect.  You see unlike many BL novels these ones are written by an actual author rather than a GW employee.

The character, background and tone of the book is well set and is consistent, the action sequences flow well and the dialogues are believable.  Numerous subplots really flesh the whole thing out.

Maybe somebody with Covert/SpecOp experience can comment more on the "realisim" aspects (my experience is all blowing stuff up from an Artillery Battery or in a Destroyer!  :D ) but they are by far the best BL books around that I have read.

I've only read excerpts in White Dwarf, but they seem well written and researched. ?But since I've never read a complete G/G novel, I can't give a better review. I'm thinking about reading a Hammer's Slammers novel. The author served in Vietnam, and is known for his realism. ?I usually read non-fiction historical ... but I might have to expand my horizens ...
