DakkaDakka showed me to this interview with Jervis.

The most germane passage to us is-

"I'm very hopeful that the lessons learnt mean that next time round we'll be able to do a much better job with the Specialist Range."

That's about in-line with what I heard.

Expect a fully seperate self-sufficient mini-company next time, one that has a reasonable studio in-line with its economic potential (Fanatic was stupidly overstaffed).

Interesting. This part seems to be the important one for us:


uld you say that the Specialist Games experiment was a success?

A: Well, it had its moments certainly, and we learnt a huge amount about how we can best support the specialist range now, and what we can do to promote the games in the specialist range and make them more popular in the future. Unfortunately these things were learnt because Fanatic just didn?t achieve what we wanted it to. Once we realised that this was the case we really had to go back to the drawing board and start to come up with a new plan. I?m very hopeful that the lessons learnt mean that next time round we?ll be able to do a much better job with the Specialist Range.


So when is "next time"?

I found this depressing...

... had... learnt... were learnt... didn't... wanted... realised... had... learnt... next time...


Anyone else see the certain past tense here? I guess that does it for SG, then.  :(  I am with Tas. Next time? That assumes that the company will want and be able to front a fifth edition of Epic and more editions of other games, and that the games will forgive GW yet again.  :devil:  The only ones who will want to go through this again, are those of us who have loads of minis and just want to use them... which means very limited potential sales.

Hi!

Its a pipe dream. Given GW's recent lest than stellar sales record, I doubt we'll ever see another "swing at the plate".

Unless there is a major change in management (which I don't foresee), don't expect anything beyond their usual core games.

What does not make sense to me is that as a miniatures company (I assume that is where they are trying to make money), I would see Epic (and other SG games) as almost a no-brainer to keep a live.

Here is my reasoning.
1) Most of the miniature development, sculpting, etc has already been done for a wide range of the minis (has even inspired a few of the 40k scale sculpts) and so the cost to GW is to either find the old plastic molds or create new ones (expensive) by recasting (which can be done - we have seen people do it).
2) New miniatures are being sculpted in this very community and probably would be willing to give GW/FW the miniature for casting and sale with minimal payment (in some cases free).
3) A new edition is not needed - it is a living rulebook anyway and we the player community are the ones refining it.  The unit datafaxes and army list are being developed right here - GW does not even have to pay anyone to develop these.

So the cost to GW for keeping E:A as a system and possibly even providing miniatures for it can be the cost of producing models and selling the miniatures (possibly also printing updated rules books / supplements once they are produced).  They are able to out source the 'hard' part (playtesting, sculpting, creative type stuff) to us and just need a few people to take what we produce and mass produce/package a sellable product.

Their sculptors are after all at the moment just taking the basic Space Marine kit and sculpting on top of it half the time.  People in this very community have hand sculpted from photos scaled down versions of FW Tanks.

I agree. As matter of fact, I don't even want a new edition. I want GW to support this one fully, complete all the armies, including a re-release old minis and creating news ones that don't exist, and follow up on the plans Jervis had for E:A when it was first released.

However, as usual I have to join the pessimists/realists who see this as Epic's last hurrah.

Ok, I realise this is GW we are talking about, but perhaps we are being too pessimistic. Relaunching Specialist does not have to involve killing any of the games they are offering at the moment. it could just be a rolling change.

I'd say that this clearly shows an attitude that SG is currently a virtual non-entity.

I agree that until/unless GW recovers the "core three" games there will be nothing for SG.

It does hold out a very small ray of hope that there might one day be a SG division in the business model of FW, but my reaction to that is "yeah right."  I'll believe it only when it happens.

It is time... For Net EA.  The support is gone, any validity that SG puts on a list will disappear when it disappears.  Rather than have the game fall completely to ruin we need an a new support structure now.

Either that or we start using our Epic pieces as DRM proxies (instead of the other way around). :p
