Wow- that looks and sounds cool.

DDG1000 Zumwalt
Purpose: Multi-mission destroyer designed for shallow-water dominance
Manufacturer: Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics
Dimensions [feet]: 600 (length); 80.7 (beam); 27.6 (draft)
Weapons: Two 155-millimeter Advanced Gun System launchers; 80 Advanced Vertical Launch System cells; two 57-millimeter close-range guns
Cost: $2.3 billion

The first time I saw the number of missile launchers I thought it was a typo. But then the same statistic was repeated in the figures shown above. So how does this system work then? Does that mean can launch 80 missiles simultaneously? Or 80 in (quick) succession?

Cheers

James

with 80 AVLSC's those class are going to be cruise missle monsters!. most vertical launch systems are hefty kit..

maybe this is a different system to what im thinking but i hope some of them will be SAM and anti-ship missles.. or this things an invisible cruise missle chucker :p

If I'm not mistaken those vertical launchers cover a range of sins, including anti-ship, anti-sub, land targets etc. Not sure about anti-air - in fact, I don;t think they cater for it. But I guess some things do have to be kept secret.

The Navy is converting any ship that launches missiles to use vertical launchers because they can cram more launchers onto a ship that way.  The launchers contain several types of missiles, from cruise missiles, anti-ship, air defense, and whatever else the boys in R&D come up with.

It's amazing how big destroyers have gotten. This baby is almost as big as a WWII heavy cruiser.

yes... modern warships are huge in comparison to what they used to be.  we no longer use battleships... but our destroyers could take on a fleet of WW2 ships and own the lot of them...

plus we have submarines bigger than WW3 aircraft carriers...

Wonder what Tas thinks of it? ?

Thanks for thinking of me boys!

VLS is simple a missile launching system. ?It is a method of multi-roling several missile types into one launcher type (previously ships carrying different launchers for different misisle types, requiring more technical skills as well as space and weight issues). ?

Currently it does not fit everything in USN inventpory into it, but that may change as they are upgraded - ?the big exception is the Harpoon anti-ship missile due to technical performance issues. ?Currently VLS is capable of taking a range of anti-air weapons, Tomohawk CMs and ASROC Anti Submarine rockets just to name a few.

The whole purpose of VLS is redundancy - you can have a damaged or failed cell, but it wont affect anything else. ?Unlike a single launcher system with a big mag underneath. ?Loose the launcher and the missiles below are useless. ?

And no, you cant loose them all off at the same time, though that would look cool! ?:p

Interesting design though I am always vary of 'artist's impresions'. ?I'll have a good read today and get back to you guys later - thanks for the link, I'll share it around at work. ?:D
