I agree. The chaos Marine concepts look ery interesting too. The one without the axe thingy would have made an awsome model for Iron Wariors or Death Guard IMO.

That is the problem. Firstly, a 3-Up would be 18-24mm high, and these look taller. Secondly, I didnt think that EPic was actually designed at 3-up level - I thought that they were made directly at 6mm.

AFAIK metal models don't need to be made as 3 ups.
However when making plastic moulds I believe it is necessary. I remember seeing a program about the production of an anniversary coin. The process is pretty much the same as you have an enlarged model and then an engraving tool that "reads" the original, and then through mechanical (well probably electronic nowadays) means scales down the movement of the tool on the mould... if that makes any sense... The way I understood it, the "reading thingy" cannot pick up all the detail as well on smaller models.
This was made before the day of the 3d laser scanner remember.

You'r point is right though: the size is wrong. However I'm not really sure if 3 up is the only scale to do this with, or other standards are used as well...

The epic plastics were all made at 9-up, so the scale fits. I'm not sure whether they just re-calibrated teh pantograph for them, or actually put them throughit twice, but I've had a good look at a few of the masters back in the days when I was regularly in the (Fanatic) studio. Jervis, Warwick & Matt Keefe used to keep a couple from their favourite 6mm figs hanging around the studio.

I've not seen these ones before, but they do look like they're very much the same style as the ones I have seen.

I'd doubt they're fakes to be honest - I've just got to decide whether I tell Doug about them, or whether I want to get paid this month first..... ;)

When modelling plastics, the originals/masters are actually made at 3 times or 9 times the size of the final model, hence "3-up" or "9-up".  That way more detail can be included than working in the actual scale of the model.

A stylus-like device then "reads" the larger model to cut a properly sized master for molding.

Now they may do that with lasers, but it was a purely mechanical process back in the day.

I think I understand what 3-up & 9-up are from reading old white dwarfs when they showed 3-ups of new 40k figures (back before they used more CAD and virtual prototypes).

Seeing a Landraider 3 times the size of normal 40k scale model stuck in my mind!!

It explains how GW were able to produce some amazing detail on ther figures. It is easier to sculpt such detail on the 3-up and then they can just shrink it down to normal scale- I beleive it enabled them to get more detail on figures as opposed to just scuplting it straight in original scale.

I am sure someone can explain the technical side of how they scaled down from 3-up to production mold better than I can.....

I really wanted to get my hands on one of these - but they went just a little teeny bit over my budget! The Iron warrior-type I was bidding on went for, get this: ?82! That's $164 for our American members.
There's clearly some very wealthy collectors out there...
