As I have mentioned before in passing, that usually when someone "quotes" on this site, I can only read the quote and none of the following text? ?

All I can see is the red "new" and yellow emoticons. After a couple E-mails to CyberShadow, he suggested to "hi-lite" the text and see what happens! ?

And... in a flash, there was the missing text! ?

So I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but that's how to fix it! ?

Amazing, technology is next to magic to me sometimes! :o ?

Thanks C/S! :;):

Hi!

I haven't had that particular one happen to me, but there have been other wierd things that usually have to do with some add thing or another on my computer, nothing I can trace to the forums functioning, which is good.

At least you found out a solution, most of the time I just format and clean install....

Legion-4,

It's really about time you splurged a few dollars and got a real computer with a CPU instead of that horrible Web TV! ?:O

Weirdness! :O

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Well Maksim,

I'm talking to my buddy at the gym and we're working on getting me a wireless lap top, so I can E-mail and surf the net, while at work, during slow periods...

However, even with his discount we're still talking over a Grand ($1000 +)!

In defense of Web TV, it can surf and E-mail generally with the same efficiency as a P.C. and only cost me $130.00 USD. Now they sell them for $100.00 USD!

And my 36 inch Toshiba T.V. is my monitor, that beats a 15 or 20 inch P.C. screen! :D ?

This is the only site I had that problem, and now it's easily fixed. And as I said we don't have a computer at work, I manage a large gym, and I do all the accounting and paperwork. No Need for hi-tech! Forbes magazine rated my home town, Youngstown, Ohio, (a former failed Steel town that died in the '70s), 199 out of 200 for the worse economies in the US. We were doing bad, while the rest of the US was doing good. The only other thing we had going for us was the Mob, but even they are "small potatos" in this town now.

So, hopefully I can get this Lap Top down the road! ?:;): ?

And Tas, my priorites include Epic, but since I've been collecting since '90, I've got almost everything... ?

I know the feeling

Just bought a new Sony VAIO desktop (well work bought three)

It comes with XP Home complete with SP1 and 6 USB 2 ports

I installed XP Professional and then SP1 to find the USB 2 ports now thought they were USB 1 ports.

I then started again from scratch (format and install)

I find out today that what happened was that after installed XP Pro and SP1 the PC "forgot" it had USB 2 ports and I had to update the driver (which was included in SP1)....

Nightmare

Can't wait until the G5 arrives... now shipping...

And these forums look great on a Mac.

Hi!

Hmm..So many windows XP horror stories. I have never been happier with WinXP, muxh better than 2000 and very stable.

Then I again I prefer Athlon XP processors and motherboards that are optimized for XP. My current laptop are from those hybrid "desknotes", half desktop and half laptop. Very powerful VERY cheap.

A athlon XP 2800, 1 GIG, 40GB harddrive, combined DVD/CD-RW with 4 USB connections costs a little over a 1000 dollars, try getting a standard laptop with the same specification if it was a pentium processor.

I never was all that happy with the performance of the Mac's I have encountered, buts its been a while since I had one at my fingertips and the reviews sounds quite good.

Plus I like the G5 commerical! :)

How are Mac's priced nowadays? Still worth the price of several PC equivalents?

I have to admit XP is my personal favourite flavour of Windoze, 2000 is pretty stable, but I will try and avoid 98 if I can (sadly in my job I have to deal with it). As for Windows Me, my old laptop has Me and I use to get the BSOD whenever I switched it on!!

I have to admit my G4 Powerbook (originally bought as a test machine) has to be my favourite computer of all time!

It is pretty fast (even though it is now 2 years old) but the best thing for me was the five hours of battery life that made it really worthwhile.

The G5 allegedly is the fastest PC in the world...

I have a dual 2Gghz G5 with 1Gb RAM on order which compared to my 550MHz G4 with 256Mb RAM will speed along...

It will be an  interesting comparison to compare the new Mac with my most recent PC as I have just ordered (and got) a Sony P4 3.06GHz with 512Mb Ram

How are Mac's priced nowadays? Still worth the price of several PC equivalents?

Well the G5 was twice the price of the Sony!!!

However a dual P4 system would be more comparable.

I guess it depends on what you are going to do with it (and how long it will last). The Sony's are replaycing Athlon 1.3s which are now 2 years old. The G5 is for DTP and graphical work.

The 12" G4 Powerbook however looks like it might be worth the money.

However my fave piece of new kit is a HP 120nr Designjet. There is something very satisfying about printing a 36" x 24" poster!

:D

Hi!

Yes, Win98 its not very good, very buggy. Win ME, at least for me isn't any better. Windows 2000 wasn't bad the NTFS filing system is/was pretty stable, but WinXP definitely is the best of the lot.

I wonder why Mac's are so expensive? Not many made? I think thats one big reason they may not be more prevalent, too expensive.

Man, I love Windows XP Professional, and I didn't think 2000 was anywhere near as bad as the rumors, and I never had a problem with 98.  I have always had more hardware problems than software (keep in mind that my last 3 PCs were laptops and I drop them, trip over power cords, leave on for excessive amounts of time downloading, and playing games which will almost overheat my current one).  The only thing I can recommend is keep up with the maintenance, download the updates as soon as they are out, and leave enough space on you hard drive so the system will run efficently.  The last one is hard for me even though I have 20gigs, but if you aren't using it, stick it on a disk and delete it off your hard drive.

Keep in mind that if you download software, or just install it, software companies have big egos and think you'll love all the icons scattered all over your PC, but the worst is when their programs are set to run in the background all the time at start-up.  Of all things, I hate that the most.  Quicktime and Real Player like to do that, and I hate nothing more than having something running when I don't need it.  I don't know who they think appreciates that. . .  anyway, run 'msconfig' and you'll be able to see what is set to run when you PC is starts up and you can cancel them.  Sometimes it isn't just Windows that's the problem, but all that you are asking it to do.  In some cases, you aren't even aware of it.

I don't know if that is more a perception than a reality. I have been to dell.com and did a quick calculation and a similar spec machine (which will be a lot slower than a G5 as a 2GHz G5 is faster than a 2GHz Pentium) was roughly the same price.

As for the flat screen iMacs I think they are good value for money and the eMac is dead cheap.

Of course if you go for a cheap PC clone you can get a really cheap machine (a lot cheaper than a Mac).

Man, I love Windows XP Professional...

I have to admit that XP does work really well, but I do find Mac OS X works better.

Example

I have a Microsoft USB Optical Intellimouse, I plugged it in to my XP Laptop and waited as XP installed the relevant drivers and then my mouse was ready to work. With OS X the same mouse just worked (no driver installation). The same can be said with virtually all the peripherals I just literally plug and play, unlike Windoze which is more plug and pray - he says with the experience of installing a HP Scanjet 5300c today. I downloaded the XP driver from the HP site and nothing worked. So I installed the 2000 driver from the CD and then patched it with the XP patch and it worked fine!!

Hi!

How does the mac handle the upscale 3-d graphics cards? Does it have the expanded AGP slots required for the "longer" high end cards?

I think if you compare Mac's to pentium PC I agree the price per equivalent specifications are roughly the same, but I buy AMD, who in recent years has taken quite a bite out of pentium's market (the home use market, pentium has a choke hold on corporate accounts). AMD based systems are extremely cost effect and remarkably stable and efficient. I recently picked up an ASUS board with an athlon 2800XP (around 2.13ghz) and 1.5 ghz ram and man is it sweet and purrs like a kitty.

I stay well away from the pentium 4 boards since the "sockets" for some components are drastically different from earlier versions and they force you into pentium 4 "compatible" products.

I think the only real reason I have not ventured into Mac's is the "software" issue, were somtimes games and software releases lag behind those for PC's. I think if this hurdle is overcome by Mac's they may truely give PC's a run for the money.

Just like to throw in my support for the Mac. I've got an old (and now very long in the tooth) iMac and its an excellent machine. Granted if you want the latest games first it wouldn't be the platform (although it's not too bad) for you, but it's a much nicer experience all round. I just need to save up for a new style iMac now!
