Check Onyx's armies out! All done using woodland scenics washes to give a really realistic looking gritty battlefield look on his miniatures. Starting his third beautiful looking army in the last couple of months since starting playing.

Nice, I like... but I would, it's more or less how I've started my IG tanks, but by mixing up washes from GW paints.

I always wash my models too, his AFVs look great ! Black, raw umber, burnt sienna, etc ... To make a wash just thin out the paint. 90 or 80 % water to paint. It really brings out the detail and "brings the model together", IMO ...

Going to have to try that technique, dry brushing don't look as good as that. Is there a guide anywhere for base coat to wash?

As far as I know he just uses regular primer spray paint cans. The orks was just some tin of silver spray paint, I know on some he had difficulty geting the wash over them but not sure what he done to get over that issue.

Depending a bit on the paint type and what kind of water you have it might be a good idea to use a tiny drop of dish washing liquid to remove surface tension. There's nothing more annoying that white areas of basecoat in small recesses because the paint didn't flow into the hole properly.

Yes, if the paint is not totally flat (has a little sheen), hit it with clear flat then wash. I usually wash black then if the model is a light color, like Tan, Ochre, etc.. I'll wash a shade of brown then possibly black ... Then I dry brush and detail. Washing is a must, in some cases you don't even have to dry brush ! What I have found with 6mm SF, I try to put on too much detail !

I'm a big fan of washing, you see, hygiene is important and - oh wait, the other type...

I use washes regularly, although my firm pair of favourites and flesh and chestnut wash, which are fairly similar. I usually apply them over a basecoat with some details painted beforehand, and then follow up with sand and then white drybrush. Works every time. Looks grand on boltgun metal.
