That Spider model looks almost perfect for a Defiler (Though it'll need a nice big battle-cannon and some nasty nasty claws). For those who haven't seen the things up close, the claws are HUGE. They're larger then IG Infantry are. And easily large enough to make the Spider look about right. At present I think they're probably the largest standard 40K vehicle in the game (With the Land Raider being the one major contention for said slot) given the huge size of their legs and height. Which you can't really see from that top-down shot, but the legs themselves are quite long and hold it high enough above the field you could actually walk troops under it as I recall.

I agree the spider is a very good proxy. If GW doesn't release them in Feb they've just lost me on Defilers.  Add a couple of claws and a cannon to the spider and hey presto.

Has anyone completed a defiler conversion of the spline spider? I nearly ordered some this week but backed out as I didn't know how big they were. Glad I found this thread now.

Someone was discussing using Ragnoroks as the basis for a Defiler conversion.  The turret looks pretty much like the torso of a Defiler, and sometimes good quality tracks are represented as Walker.  that only leaves adding a couple of weapons to the turret and claws.

I would be concerned that it might look Orky, but it would be serviceable.

In any case, the turrets (or, better yet, a cheaper KV2 turret from another manufacturer) would be great bitz.

Yeah i mentioned using Ragnaroks for Defilers.
Will get the conversions on the go asap (a lot of projects on the plate at the mo, not least of which is painting my house!)

Hey, me too! Fortunately I don't have to paint my entire house, just two sides and shutters.

Still a long way from even starting mine, but I was so impressed with them, I bought 6.  I've also managed to acquire 6 sets of claws from the metal and plastic version of the Gutrippa.  I know, it's a lazy-mans stand in for the Defiler claws, but then, I'm a lazy man.

The rocket pods on the back should be easy to cut off, then re-attach in the "closed" position to make it look even better.

At $4 for the Spider and about $3 each for the claws, still beats paying for a Ragnarok.  Plus the Gutrippas each come with a cool metal Orky turret.

The turret portion of the defiler will be a combination of a plastic Ork B-Wagon turret (maybe a new barrel) w/ the top of a plastic marine Dread on top (idea stolen from WMN).
