I've recently started painting up some old Epic Eldar I had around (these are the old skool ones with square bases).
I spray undercoated them with GW Skull White (coz they are Biel Tan). Now when I come to fit them in the bases the undercoat has made them too big for the (already tiny) hole in the base! I'm having to scrape off the undercoat from the edge with pincers which is really, really tedious.

I can't be the only one with this problem!? What can be done? Are the newer epic bases (the standing in a line looking silly bases) any better? I don't remember having this problem in the old days!  :;):

I base my infantry first, then prime them. This way you don't have to worry about the paint making them too big to fit into the holes.

Hmmm that's a good solution but I think painting them on the square bases would be a real pain. I was painting these on the sprue.

The strip bases have slightly bigger holes. The square bases were designed to snap fit the infantry without the use of glue. The strip bases however require some glue to keep the miniatures in place.

Yes, it is harder to paint the minis once they are on the square base, but I find it easier than painting the mini first and then mounting it on the base. With the strip bases, this is less of an issue, since you don't have to worry about getting to the mini in the middle.

So that's two good reasons to go for the strip bases, hmmmmm...
That's a shame coz I think they look awful. Maybe I'll get used to them but as a old Space Marine gamer from years ago - they just look "wrong" to me!

I prefer the square bases, too. I just put up with the difficulty of painting the mini in the middle.

If you haven't already undercoated all the miniatures what you can do is mask the edges of the figure's base with some tape or postertack.  After you spray just peel it off.

Yes the new long bases have slightly bigger holes ... 6mm Infantry is always a challenge to paint. But I've learned that by painting on too much detail ... no one can really see it !  But that is no excuse to do a sloppy paint job !  :D

I was a naysayer on the new rectangular base too, but I find it hard to say no, especially as the new E40K/E:A models dont fit in the old square bases!!!  GW B#$%@r*(.

One option to fix the "Paint on square base" is dont fill the centre hole....4 men per base looks fine :).  Also remember you can probably only see the top bit of the middle guy anyway.

SM era infantry had problems getting their feets on those square bases too. They didnt even need undercoat for that. Bent plastic and marks from tools were usual on figure bases as they were forced into bases.

IMO I like those strip bases. Models are easier to paint and on a whole, they look better when looked close by. Old square bases fit nicely under light vehicles, skimmers and walkers.

Dremel makes a cutter bit (115 High Speed Cutter) that's useful for widening the basing holes on the square bases.  I've found you can even use it by hand with decent effect, more so than getting a file in there.  It would help getting the primer off the basing holes too.

You could also try painting the models on the base, maybe leaving the center one off and painting it separately in the future.

Something else I just thought of that might help.  When you're spraying the base cram a small piece of newspaper in the hole and get it out with a toothpick or other pointy object when done.  Keeps the paint from filling it up.

For the old Square bases, I just drop the figure into the hole, use a pair of tweezers held sideways and positioned either side of the mini to push 'em in, then just run some liquid cement around the base.  Never get any bent guys.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think the new bases are going to be the way to go. Esp considering what zap123 said about the newer models not fitting in the old bases. I can see how much easier they will be to paint in those bases too.

The only problem is I now have 18 stands of Eldar guardians in the old square bases!! I'll put up with some inconsistency while I get the army up and running, and worry about changing/replacing them later.
