The Chaos Battleship picture you used is the Desolator Battleship :) not the Despoiler.

Same thing goes for the Devastation slass cruiser: It's a Slaughter class AFAICT. :;):

Some technical issues you might want to bear in mind:

If this is intended for print use you'd probably want to avoid using pictures found on the net - especially ones taken from the GW site. They're extremely low resolution (72dpi and saved as .gif images for some reason) and will look very pixelated in print. For good printed results you need pics at least 150 dpi and preferably even higher than that.
The simplest way to test this is to zoom in on the pdf. If the image still looks good at 400% it should look decent in print. However if a pic looks pixelated on the screen it will look even more horrible in print.

If possible I'd suggest that you obtain the original uncompressed photos of all the fan pics. Drop the pics from the online store and get ?higher resolution pics from board members. Make sure all the GW IP artwork you use is high-res scans from the original publications and not taken from the net. Scans may require compensation for Moir? lines as well.

Thanks for the information WN and others.

The pics are mainly there as placeholders for the moment, just to firm up the layout and such.

I seriously doubt GW will give access to high resolution pictures of their product!  (They mainly seem to use low res .gifs on their website for transparency purposes... can you have a "transparency colour" in a .jpg?)

I'd love it if people could gather together pictures for all the various Chaos units.

As to the "wrong class" of ships, well, I just grabbed them off the Online Store as I don't think there are GW pics of the proper classes for the Chaos ships about.  Again, if anyone has nice clean shots of the required ships, that would be great!

Anyone interest in contributing pics cans PM me and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks!

.Tiff and Photoshop PSD formats allow transparency. There's probably more but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Depending a bit on which program you intend to use for assembeling the book anyway as I don't think a lot of non-Adobe programs will allow PSD files.
Tiff files can be converted from other file formats but if people have cameras with the oiption to save the images as Tiffs (or RAW) that would be preferable to .jpgs to prevent detail loss. Won't matter as much for publications for home print like this, but it may stil be a good idea to bear in mind.

Brilliant, When it's finished, I'll certainly want a paper copy.

I have made some RubricMarines (with headdresses) and PlagueMarines (with spiked helmets). Need only to paint them.
But i need a quality digi-cam to make pictures. So i have to wait at least two weeks before i have accsess to this digi-cam
If you can wait so long i will take some pictures for you :)

No transparency in JPEG. The best support for transparency among common web image formats is PNG. Just that it doesn't work properly in IE... grr. It should work fine in a PDF though.

I'll see what I can do about getting some of my collection photographed.

Ah, PNG, forgot about that one.  Cool.

As to people snapping shots of their collection, I, for the most part, need nice clean shots of individual units.

For the Chaos Marines, if you've got them in Black Legion colours, all the better!  For the Cultists and such, anything goes.

I will also be adding a "You can use this [Warmaster\Imperial Guard\etc] for this Chaos unit" section as well, as an appendix.

I thought hula dancers were more a Slaanesh schtick... ?or is it because they change out of their normal clothes to do the dance?!

*laugh*

On a serious note, do they represent units in the two basic Chaos lists or are the more Thousand Sons units?

In the case of Thousand Sons it doesn't really matter - since the cult of Tzeench makes Black Legion marines into Thousand Sons. Obviously. Or Magnus loans out a whole bunch of his legion to Abaddon. Or something.

Magnus loans out the Great Clipper of Tzeentch to Abaddon?   But I thought Abaddon had Drach'nyen for cutting his nails?   :D

Tzeentch Sorcerers of the ThousandSons wander around with their own bodyguard/retinues of RubricMarines and fight for everyone who will offer them knowledge and/or power.

Same with NoiseMarines, Berzerkers and PlagueMarines. But with this three it is possible that they where former BlackLegionaires.
BlackLegionaires who dedicate themselve to Tzeentch become Sorcerers but RubricMarines are ALWAYS ThousandSons.

Part of me feels that the Traitor units should be in the list. rather than just telling people to see original rulebook. I don't mind supplying pictures for them. I am already painting Nurgle rough riders, chimeras, traitor guard, hellhounds, sentinels, Leman Russes, basalisks and hydras for an army I'm working on at the moment. Painting 1 stand of fire support wouldn't be a problem, so that just leaves a griffon. I've got to get the army finished by the end of this month so they should be available before you have finished everything else.

I will also be able to supply a Decimator, Demagogue, Arch heretic, L&D Chaos space marine aspiring champion, Mutants, Big Mutants, Silver Towers, Feral

I agree with you in principle, but that's a lot of pages of "duplication", plus flavour text will need to be written for them.  I'm not going to add it currently, but I will put it on my list of possible "improvements".

Very cool!

When taking pictures for the unit descriptions, if at all possible, take them in a light box/shooting tent to make it easier to mask/crop the actual unit model from the background, or at least take the picture without too much other stuff.

I'll be looking at 'action' shots later as well.

Thanks for all the interest!
