A couple of people in my local EPIC group are quite interested in Tau, but are hesitant to buy any models until the list is "very firm", so we occasionally run proxy games just to get a feel for the greyskins and see how they play.

Tell them to buy already, I want to see reports with real Tau miniatures.

Well, I believe the Tau army used in this report would cost something over 120 Pounds... so, if you'd like to contribute to our Tau fund, I do have a PayPal account...  :D

Hi,

actuallty there's no risk as long as you pick-up a balanced force. Good news, the Tau list works very well that way. Your ABC list lacks variety in that respect and is a bit more risky though not much in my opinion.

Maybe just avoid highly experimental units like the Moray.

I agree with BP, Chroma. If they buy Hammerheads, infantry and crisis suits etc they should be good as those units will not change too much. Even if they do (stats-wise) they are the backbone of a force so won't be getting culled from it as minis

It's the number of units in a formation that I think has my lads worried... well, that and the bloody cost... *laugh*

Check out the threads on good proxies, ie empty scenic bases for stealths, 1st edition plstic guaridans for firewarriors etc.

Can't afford the Tau?  I have two words for you...

TAX RETURN.

That is where half mine went last year. :D

As always, you provide an excellent batrep. ?Chroma, what is your opinion of the Tau. ?Are they balanced against the core three?

Ah, forgot to answer this one.

I'm going to express my opinion about Tau here, and I love them, but I don't think it's going to be a popular stance:

I think Tau are overpowered.  They are the "new Eldar" in my mind, and are probably the most powerful army out there.  I don't think they're balanced against the "core three".  I won this battle *purely* on luck.  The Orks had been *savaged*, heck, if my opponent had taken those Tigersharks instead of Barras, I don't think there would have been any Orks left on the table!

The ABC army could've savaged Guard, as they would be able to pick the deployment to their advantage and doubling AT3+ attacks at 75cm are going to be a serious hurt on Guard... and that's without Hammerheads doing long-range pop-ups!  (Dangit, I so do love the Tank Cadre!  *laugh*)

As to Marines... well, they need help for anything except Drop Assaults, so no comments there.

With Eldar, I, as the best EPIC player in my group, can take on Tau and beat them when played by "average" opponents, though I don't think I've tried it with the version 1.8 Eldar; keeping Blast markers will slow the Eldar down.  I've been asked not to field Tau as no one around here things they'll be able to beat me if I do!  *laugh*

Tau are extremely shooty (as they should be), are decent in FF (good armour, and MWFF is nothing to sneeze at!), and terrible in CC... but with Tau Jump Packs and lots of skimmer this is somewhat mitigated.  They have multiple *good* tools for various battlefield roles and they do those jobs well.

What is the Tau "weakness"?

There is one "bad" formation, basic Fire Warriors, but that doesn't make up for the plethora of *awesome* units in the list, and I haven't tested them yet with their "upgunning".

I have a hard time making a Tau army because *everything* is so cool and everything can do the business.

Now here's the kicker... I don't know what needs to be changed to balance the army... point tweaks, slight weapon/unit tweaks... I just don't know yet... but *something* is just off.  All it may take is a subtle change to fix things, but something does need to be fixed.

There, that's my two c'ents!

How about distilling your thoughts further and starting a thread on them?

What's sure: it's quite easy to get to grips with Tau. I remember I had my lot of victories when I started them, until my opponents learnt to counter them effectively.

I share your thougths about the broadsides. I think I'll continue to play 6 of them for 300 pts as I did in early playtest.
Still I'm totally fond of their new statline. Makes for a very tough unit for points now, as you'd expect. And still spikey.

I'm having some thoughts about the Crisis suis these days. Weren't they a bit too good at busting infantry, and thus stealing the firewarriors role in your list?

Maybe something like this:

Firewarriors: 2 x AP Weapon
Crisis: 2x AP and AT mixed for flexibility (their three weapons are way too good I think not to be taken)
Broadside: pure 2x AT Killer  (secondary weapons adds up to  a better FF value to represent smart missiles self defence capabilities)

Maybe we have to go away from the 40k syndrom of the "universal 100 weapon all killer TAU Crisis" and give every infantry a special task.

just a thought.

Soren
