Posted by Volandum at the Specialist Games forum, his favourite and most effective fleet:
Pirate Prince, two rerolls, 33 Nightshades.
1500 points.
Insane? Effective? Dull?

I am not convinced that it would be so effective. You have a load of specialist vessels. That said, the Tyranid Vanguard fleet seems to be interesting (at least to me), so I would play this. A couple of heavy carriers would be useful against this lot, though!

Vanguard seems nice indeed, not too complicated and good affordable by buying 40k 'Nids.

Yes, that is what drew me to the fleet. I have no idea how it will perform, but the ability to make loads of small Tyranid vessels from spare parts is just too cool to resist!

Dull. But he knows my opinions on this matter. We approach the game from two very different perspectives. He finds fun in playing the way he is, he sees how I would play as ultimately shooting myself in the foot. I see his way as dull and boring (robotic, I believe was the word I used).
It would be an effective fleet in many situations, but as Volandum himself will freely concede: it could be utterly dire in some other situations. A largely 45cm WBd Chaos Fleet, or an average and untailored Tau fleet would put it at quite a difficulty.
Effective, yes, but not the most brilliant fleet in the world. One of the most boring I can imagine playing with, but still: a reasonable fleet.

I dont think that it would be as dull as some similar fleets (all Sword, for example) since there would be a skill in reloading and so on. It would be interesting for the occassional game, but I wouldnt want to use it as my main fleet.

Effective against enemies who don't have good ordnance coverage, pathetic against enemies who do. Otherwise, utterly boring and mechanical (good choice of words, Xisor). I certainly appreciate the value of a specialist fleet but I am one of those people who likes variety- at least with Eldar. Then again, I am the kinda player that actually uses Hellebores and Solaris light cruisers on occasion just because I play for fun with friends.
Make no mistake, I love the Nightshade. It's one of my favorite escorts in all of BFG, but an entire fleet composed of these ships just seems... lacking and easily countered by an enemy who knows what to expect. Also no small amount of irony: the safest place for the enemies of the Eldar against such a fleet is actually inside an asteroid field or low orbit. Also it feels decidedly vulnerable against a Dark Eldar fleet.
Ultimately it's good against someone who lets you get close and can't chase after you or protect against your torpedoes, but really has several glaring weaknesses that could be exploited with moderate effort of an enemy. Granted some races are just flat out screwed against such a fleet like Orks, All-Demiurg, and possibly an ill equipped IN fleet but still- big weaknesses.

This is for me strictly a matter of taste: I would never take it. I dont play tournaments so effectivenes arely comes into play ass i useually field more ballanced and fluff orriented lists.

I do like the idea of it, however only mildly effective, my WB fleet Imperial list would rip it to pieces. Plus a couple of gas clouds would greatly hinder its performance.
However it does look fun for an elder list.
