Beause killing larger WE synapses is much easier than smaller. I don't see any reason to make them make the nid army more vulnerable. Make that full DC and I won't touch Vituperator and Harridan with a big stick as they cannot hide behind anything. Dominatrix at least can bring the boys (hierodules and trygon) around for a spin around the block.

Er... Harridans and Vituperators can take Hierodules and Tyrgons, just like the Dom, in fact, my usual Harridan formation is 2 Hierodules!

As well, they both have skimmer so can pop-up to shoot, etc, so that gives them *terrain* to hide behind.  *laugh*

I think BTS should be DC not creature.

Basing BTS on DC in some way is the only way to work it.

Our group has used starting DC of killed synapse creatures so yes the Harridan and Dominatrix are worth 3 and 6 respectively but I do see Hena's point.

Have not tried half starting DC but how about this - we compromise and use half starting DC of synapse creatures....ROUNDED UP?

So a dead DC1 synapse creature would be worth 1 point, a Harridan worth 2 and a Dominatrix 3 etc..

Would this be worth a try?

If you guys are basing it on DC, what do you do with Warriors?  Do warriors count for 3 while a Tyrant only counts for 1?

Yep that's how we've played it - each warrior counts as 1 as does each tyrant.

Yeah, that's how we've been doing it too.

You count total dead Synapse creatures (DC as units), not the specific Synapse Groups that have been destroyed.

So 3 Assault Groups would be 9 Synapse Creatures - if two groups lost 2 Warriors and the last lost 1 Warrior, the enemy would have achieved BTS.

How about if the Dom only counts to BTS if you kill it outright and all other BTS can be achieved via DCs? It makes it a challenge for opponents to kill the Dom, but BTS can still be achieved by offing the smaller units individually - a big hit or a whittling away of the hive mind?

Dobbsy, so you mean if you inflict 1 wound on a Harridan it counts 1 towards the BTS? This makes the Harridan even less attractive than before!

Here's a new suggestion to the mix, the BTS value of each Synapse Group is equal to the max spawning value of that group.

So......

Hive Group is worth 6 (2d3)
Attack Group is worth 4 (D3+1)
Harrassment Group 3
Strike Group 4
Assault Group 3 etc..

To achieve this you must destroy the synapse creature(s) in the group; so killing a single warrior stand counts for nothing but wiping out the Assault Group is worth 3.

With full DC, I might as well forget about it and give BTS to opponent by default. As the way to win against Tyranids is to remove swarms. This happens by killing synapses. If the BTS is too easy to make, then it'll happens automatically because of this. And for that reason it makes the multi DC synapses pointless.

Honestly Hena, that's like saying no army should take a large war engine because it's most likely going to be BTS and destroyed anyway. ?I don't actually think that argument holds water.

I hardly think it allows the enemy to achieve BTS automatically, they still have to put a lot of effort into killing the bigger Synapse beasties. ?But that's one of the main points when fighting against Tyranids "Kill the Synapse!", consider it another "weakness" in a list that some complain about having too many strengths.

I've found the "mid range" Synapse WE to be great fighting platforms, even without Brood creatures around them, they can do a lot of damage for their points, and they're very mobile, and they're cheaper than similar DC war engines in other lists.

Yes, you have to be careful with them, but what would be the fun if using the army was always easy?

Lastly, I've fielded a Dominatrix in a total of six 3000+ games, and I've never lost Her once.  Moving cover to cover to get that -1 works wonders on survivability!

Ps. When doing a next iteration of the list, could you start a new thread :).

Yep!  *laugh*  Good point.

(More comments later, I've got to go tutor some kids in English.)
