The article is to try and get readers of Firebase interested in at least trying Epic out, since it is basicly free to try.  Having the proxies available does not help us, if non players do not know about it.  Also going to take some pictures of my Ultramarines to send in with it, showing the forces used for the Scenarios.  This way the guys at Firebase just have to 'format' the article and add in photos to their liking.

Nice article, orangesm. It's always good to spread the word :)

I would add a reference to this forum if possible and a recommendation for people to ask for players in their proximity. Learning from somebody else is always more fun and easier than doing it on your own.

Nice article Orangesm! I like the idea and hope it works to bring people to the hobby.

My only question is about using SM as an example starter army as SM are notoriously difficult for first timers.  What about using Orks or IG as an example force. Also it may be worth drawing attention to FW which has far cheaper prices for tanks at least.

Nice idea. If you need any resources or any assistance, let me know.

Actually that is a good point- for ?84 youd be better buying terminators and a LC over all those preds and whirlwinds.  Also it may be worth pointing out the wonders of ebay for Rhinos :)

Great idea, orangesm. If possible, I would also include pics of tournament sized armies or pics from an actual game.

I am trying to focus on the initial Training Scenarios in the Rulebook.  I will add that unless a player really wants to play Space Marines that it is best to stick to the Proxy Counters for now.

Added at the end of the cost paragraph:
However for the new player Space Marines have a steep learning curve.  Unless you really want to play Space Marines, it is probably best to just keep to the proxy counters. Once you have a handle on the rules, the best starter armies are Orks or Imperial Guard which you will see more of in Epic: Beyond Training.

Added at the end of the article:
If you cannot wait for the next article and must know more about Epic you can post questions in the Specialist-Games sub forum on Warseer or go to Tactical Command Forums (http://www.tacticalwargames.net/cgi-bin ... nboard.cgi) and see the latest development of your favorite army.  Yes, the game is now player developed.  Also there is nothing stopping you from having a go at the 4 additional training scenarios, just at the moment there are no proxies for it.  So have fun and play a few games of Epic and see how war in the 41st Millennium really is.

Anyone up for making counters for the Specialist, Warmachine, and Aerospace scenarios?

Hmm, I detect an excuse for someone to scan the card-board Ork Gargant from the Epic 40k box set... :D

Any other comments or additions that people think should be made?  I got shots of my Marines in there to show what minis are used in the training missions and a shot of some Guard as a 'preview' of future articles.

I will need shots of Orks for follow on articles and the various forces used in the other training scenarios (I do not have Orks built and painted at the moment).

I'm sure you could get people here to give you pics of Orks or whatever else you need.

I think you need to explain how Epic is different from 40k, while being in the same universe.

Here's a contribution, do with it as you will:

Epic plays more like 40k should. Instead of a total IGOUGO kind of action, with the move, fire and assault phases, Epic goes by Detachments. For example, a Space Marine Tactical Detachment consists of six stands of Space Marines, and you can upgrade them with Drop Pods, Rhinos or Razorbacks to transport them, Hunter AA Rhinos for air cover, a Dreadnought, or a Vindicator for fire support.

First, you have to activate. That represnents the unit receiving orders. Space Marines pretty much can activate with no problem, but there are circumstances where you can't. Once activated, you can do a variety of actions. You can move and fire, you can move double and fire at a disadvantage, you can triple move and not fire, or you can stand still and fire at an advantage, or regroup to take off blast markers.

Firing is simple, a single roll to hit or miss. Under circumstances, you can actually need a 7, 8, or even 9 to hit your target, and yes, you can roll those numbers on a six sided die. For every hit, your opponent gets a save. Heavily armored units like Land Raiders or Terminators get a reroll on their save to represent their heavier armor.

Once you have activated a unit, then most of the time you pass the initiative to your opponent and they activate a unit. This back and forth develops the battlefield more like it would in real life.

There are more particulars to the rules, but those are the basics.

In Epic, armies play differently than they do in 40k. In 40k, Space Marines are bludgeons, brute force units that you can throw at the enemy line and have enough get there to prevail in a close combat.

In Epic, Space Marines are a scalpel, to be used to make surgical strikes on particular parts of the enemy line. Most of the time, they are outnumbered and that is a disadvantage in close combat.

Some armies pretty much play the same, IG plays with massive mechanized forces, and Orks play with sheer numbers to overwhelm enemy defences.

*end of contribution*

Do with that as you will, you don't have to add me to the author and you can edit that as you want, or use it for your own ideas.

Thanks for the input MemphisMark.  I added a similiar paragraph about how the rules set works.  Thanks again.

Thanks to all of your inputs.  I am going to send the article in to the Firebase team tomorrow hopefully.
