Aye, the burning train scene was one of those rare things... a CGI scene that was truly original. :)

VSF?

Ah, I just left the cinema feeling somewhat disappointed, and the plot seemed to have holes the size of canada (let me get this straight... they came to the planet already, didn't bother colonising then AND somehow avoided becoming affected by bacteria then?). And don't get me started on the ending. Yech.

It had its moments (some of the tripod scenes were awesome), but it wouldn't be making my favourite movies list!  :D

Of all the plotholes in War of the Worlds, that one was the only one that didn't need explaining, IMHO.

I think Steven S. had it right in not getting bogged down in making up some convoluted explanation for how the aliens came to earth (Maybe they came long ago and freeze-dried themselves in the atmosphere until the planet was ready to support them... maybe they arrived in ships and then beamed down, creating the tripods from raw materiels in the earth itself... maybe they were the original inhabitants of the earth many millions of years ago but they destroyed the earth and had to hibernate! Who knows and in this case who cares!) because his War of the Worlds story was from the perspective of a man who doesn't know what's going on, his concerns are more immediate and more pressing, keeping his family alive in the chaos.

Going into depth about the technological whys and wherefores of the impossible at the expense of the human drama is too Voyager-era Star Trek for me!

I prefer sci-fi that is subjective, even unfathomable to the protagonist (Children of Men falls into this category... *MINOR SPOILER* there are a lot of people out there on movie forums railing against the film for never making the reasons for the world's infertility clear... claiming that such a critical ommission drastically affected their enjoyment of the movie... all the while ignoring the incredible human drama).

Does it make sense for Tom Cruise to learn how the tripods came to earth? Is it important to him? Will it influence his journey in any way whatsoever if he does learn?

Not really. It's just not important to the character, he doesn't even show interest in the TV crew's speculation on the subject.

Now, does it make sense when the crew of the tripod fall ill at the end of the movie, that they're still well enough to aim their kill-rays and keep the tripod upright, but they don't take the time to turn their energy shield back on?

No it does not. That is a big plot hole, which was there simply as an excuse to have a cool battle scene where the humans win.*** :D

*** This is known as 'The Michael Bay Effect'.

I was taliking about this with my girlfriend and the hardest bit was remembering what came out earlier this year as there have been so many great movies the last few months.  According to the net Brokeback Mountain was out jan 2006 though I swear it was 2005.  Anyway, that was probably the movie that left the biggest impression on me, though Pans Labrinth and Capote also left me really affected.  All those movies had really striking images that stayed with me for a few days afterwards, brokeback the most though for the sheer beauty of the shots and the harsh ending.

Favourite movie of 2006 is a bit tougher, id probably say Casino Royale for sheer bondy coolness..  And cars... and women.. and for collapsing half of damn venice.. and for making poker cool...  and for realising that supervillains dont really work in the post powers world :)

Saw it soon after getting together with my GF in 'feb, and it was new-ish out then. :)

Missed WotW, missed Capote.... dang PhD.
But - saw a Night at the Museum yesterday - a no-brainer, but fun! If all my troops came to life at night, I'd be in BIG trouble!

Urgh... I missed a lot of great movies this year. I think the only ones I saw were "Syriana", "The Da Vinci Code", "Pirates of the Carribean" and "CAsino Royale". The first two were pretty awfull although both were interesting subjects... just not for a film... Though the new Bond is pretty cool it just isn't the same without Sean Connery :D Then again they cast two danes for the villains so I had to check it out. ?
"Pirates" was a lot of fun as expected. Not exactly anything revolutionary but with some good action, great visual effects and humour I left the teatre feeling well entertained.

I really wanted to see "Capote" but I guess I'll just have to pick it up on DVD.

Another thing that left a poor taste in my mouth... the humans shouldn't win a battle (which surely should have been the point of the film?)

Tas: nice tripods! (Don't get me wrong, I love War of the Worlds, just was disappointed with Spielberg's effort!)

Magnus: definately rent Lady Vengance... it was great. Not exactly easy watching, but a truly superb film. Much better than Sympathy for Mr Vengance, but I'll always like Oldboy best.

Vanvlak, Jok3r: me too. Although I like to escape to the peace and calm here away from the family: gives me time to ramble on forums... I mean work...

Ahhh yes, BUT in the classic novel an artillery battery dispatches one (and thus the Martians start using the "black smoke"), and HMS THUNDERCHILD dispatches another 2 by cannonade before she is sunk by heat rays.

So Humans can take them out after all!

Thanks very much! ?I plan to expand my tripod collection soon.... ?:alien:

Sorry to hijack the thread: Night at the Museum was a family hit oin Boxing Day here too V! ?

Aye those are some of the best scenes of the book (The Thunder Child scene is amongst my favourite passages of any book ever).

But in the new movie, it made no logical sense to allow the Humans to kill a tripod... it was just there because it was cool, it didn't make sense in the context of the story.
