I think that my biggest problem is that my talents dont meet my expectation. I have to sit down and ground myself before I do any painting, reinforcing that it wont be bad, but not 'Eavy Metal standard and I will be able to use it for gaming. After that, it is easier to be happy. Just keep telling yourself that you are getting better, and that they are better than unpainted versions.

I'm in the same boat. Fortunately I've resigned myself to the reality that I'll never produce Golden Daemon quality minis, but my skills are at least good enough to paint minis that look good on the battlefield. Plus, I know my skills are improving, even if it is at a glacial pace.  :D

Like others, I do suffer occasionally from creative blocks. Sometimes I'm not quite sure exactly how I want to paint something. So, I'll put that mini (or group of minis, since I usually do a whole detachment of something all at once) aside and come back to it later when the right "look" finally hits me.

Like Van, I also am intimidated by infantry, mainly because of the sheer number of it that I have to paint, but also because it can be hard for me to pick out minute details, like eyes.

Oh yeah, and I worry about wasting paint, too!  :D

Infantry can always be a pain. Not so much because of the actual paint job but mainly because of the basing. I absolutely utterly hate doing bases! Of course some infantry paints up quicker than other: Marines are a lot quicker to do than Eldar Aspects obviously.

Choosing the minis to paint can be dificult too I think. Sometimes I look at a mini and really feel like painting t. I then notice the big pile of his buddies which I'm supposed to give the same colors so I then usually begin painting the lot. This also means that I easily get bored halfway through them ( painting 300 hands on a 30 stand Guard company for example...).

Generally speaking I find Eldar vehicles to be the hardest to paint. There's just no cutting corners there as you'll want a smooth and bright finish with sharp color contrasts and lots of details. Strangely it is the underside of the eldar vehicles I'm having the most trouble with. Perhaps it is because I have to paint them Tin Bitz and constantly risk getting dark metallic paint of the bright yellow upper side.

Yep, I've got most of my Grunts (from SM1 on!), based and organized and totally "deployable" ... But unpainted ! I want to do too much detail and so take my time !  Plus all the other WIP/SIB/SM2+ -'Nids/ E40K Titans+/FW T&K, IG, etc./terrain?/ DRM/EW, Etc., etc. !! :)

When I get discouraged, I just get drunk. Then I pilot a supertanker through narrow fjords.

As a side note, I used Reaper Master Series Brown Liner for the first time to blackline, and it works really well.

How did you like it?  I swear by the stuff for dark lining panel lines on vehicles/big stompy robots.  Brown Liner FTW!

@ Warmaster Nice:  here's a trick I've used for airbrushing that may help avoid getting tin bitz on your yellow.  Take some poster tack, that putty stuff used to hang posters when you're too cheap to buy a frame, and put that where you don't want the paint to go.  Make sure you seal the mini before you put it on though as if the primer isn't on well or it grabs the paint a little too well it can pull off small amounts of your paint when you remove it.  I've been doing this to mask the camo pattern on some CAV models and it works well.  One other thing, don't let the paint build up along the poster tack, it'll form a ridge when it dries.

Sounds interesting  It should work just fine for the metal models though I'm a bit more concerned when it comes to the FW resins. The paint tends to chip off much easer even after good cleaning to remove the mould grease.

I haven't worked with resin so I couldn't tell you how the paint would react.

I think that after cleaning the F/W Resin with vinager, followed by a diluted Oxyclean rinse, I'm going base coat the Epic AFVs with thinned enamel paint.  Then paint over that with water base ...   Of course big resin, like that W/M Orc Vill, I just spray paint the base ... after cleaning !

My intention is to use my airbrush as much as possible, regardless of material under the primer.

So I stayed home tonight to get some painting done, as I haven't had much opportunity to paint after work as of late.  Everything just went very poorly.  I was doing a test paint scheme for my CAV terran force, and the basecoat turned out blotchy, so I reapplied it very thinly, which helped, but not enough.  Now I'm waiting for it to dry so I can give them an ink wash and drybrush in the hopes of covering the blotchiness.

I was just wondering, does anyone ever get disgusted with their painting abilities, and does it keep you from painting?  I find that it puts me off from getting things done, as I'm miserable at work all day, and am hesitant to attempt to paint at night, as I know I'll probably get discouraged.

Hi!

Totally.

Until I discovered that I can PAY someone else with better painting skills to do it..... :;):

Like many things in life, with my huge Epic G/W-F/W (10+ Armies), DRM + now E/Wars (and counting) and numerous terrain projects ... I just lean forward, make time and put one foot in front of the other, so to speak.  If I'm not "up" for painting, there is always clean flash, mounting, washing resin, etc., etc. ...  "Git 'eR Dun !" !  :D

I know that feeling. Past couple of days I really have felt like painting (painter's block  :D  ); so, I've spent time basing, cleaning flash, updating my inventory, etc.

My trick is to do the "test piece".

Lets face it, if you are getting discouraged (and yes, we've all been there), its ALWAYS on a mini that you care about.  Frequently, I find it is when trying something new, such as a new camo scheme.  My coping strategy with this is to take a handfull of models that you don't care about, and experiment with them.  Do your washes, drybrushing etc... on them, and see what looks good, and what sucks.  Don't go on to the master model until you are reasonably happy with one of the tests :D

Cheers,
CF
