So I stayed home tonight to get some painting done, as I haven't had much opportunity to paint after work as of late.  Everything just went very poorly.  I was doing a test paint scheme for my CAV terran force, and the basecoat turned out blotchy, so I reapplied it very thinly, which helped, but not enough.  Now I'm waiting for it to dry so I can give them an ink wash and drybrush in the hopes of covering the blotchiness.

I was just wondering, does anyone ever get disgusted with their painting abilities, and does it keep you from painting?  I find that it puts me off from getting things done, as I'm miserable at work all day, and am hesitant to attempt to paint at night, as I know I'll probably get discouraged.

What I do is put the item down and start painting something else. I've started paint jobs that went south, put them down and came back to them years later. And you know what? Now some of those are among the best minis I've done.

Yes, I wait until my head is completely into it.  And I've been modeling since the 60s, so I can always "Fix" anything I mess up !  But with all the 6mm SF, I have and buying more, I just have to make the time and drive on !  :D

I think we all do, I'm having a real block on the tanks, revenants and avatar for my Iyanden. Just don't always feel like painting them, and sometimes they scare me... .. This is why I have huge amount of infantry.

Same here - or rather, the opposite of MBRat, I get scared of troops, not vehicles and titans and big guys.

I get scared of everything...

Washes and glazes, in particular, are my bugbear.  Sometimes I can get fairly smooth effects with them, often not.  Sometimes I feel like a mad alchemist, adding proportions of of a whole medley of paints, inks, mediums, varnishes and water together in search of the elusive perfect wash.

We all have our fears.  Mine, silly as it is, is wasting paint.  I hate doing certain techniques because I'm afraid I'm wasting paint and will run out of a critical color, which means I have to let the model sit while I wait for resupply.  That and I'm a cheapskate.  Comes from my days of being married on a Private's paycheck.

i can't seem to highlight for toffee - then i drybrush when its not an appropriate surface...my washing always dry splotchy....and i can't freehand either - which is something i desperatley want to do.  I guess you just got to get your head down and push yourself and deal with any mistakes, and keep trying to you get it.  Just like learning to eskimo roll in a kayak - gotta force yourself out of the comfort zone and do it in a pool, a lake, a river and then rapids! :-)

For me, the 'scarey colours' are flesh and reds.

I think that my biggest problem is that my talents dont meet my expectation. I have to sit down and ground myself before I do any painting, reinforcing that it wont be bad, but not 'Eavy Metal standard and I will be able to use it for gaming. After that, it is easier to be happy. Just keep telling yourself that you are getting better, and that they are better than unpainted versions.

Good advice - I consider myself lucky, because I'm happy with my standard, even though it won't ever win me any competitions. I just consider it a particular form of paint job which is my own, and that's that. Of course stuff such as the pink Dark Eldar and my Blue Dwarfs (ALL blue, noses included) are a bit weird....

John Blanche's art and models are a source of inspiration to me. Both are gritty, and both seem less-finished than full-colour artwork and Golden Daemon models. But they look the part. Currently I'm toying with minimalist schemes, such as black Skaven with yellow eyes and a drybrush, and nothing else. Especially in the case of Clan Eshin. Dark, sinister, shadowy and not too clean and well-defined. And fast to paint too!

I think everybody has projects that just fail miserably - that's just part of the hobby. I always try to keep no real expectatins for each project. It's hard to do of course, because you want it to look the best ever, but if you can do it you are more likely to be happy with the results. That said, I've been totaly bummed out when a really cool idea just doesn't work. But for every one of those times I have a time where everything just falls into place and it looks awesome.

Hi Despot,

When that happens, find some inspiration or switch to a different project.

That seems to work for me something like 99% of the time!

And in the other 1% of the time, I simply take a break until later.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Thanks for all the replies guys. ?I slept on it and went back thismorning and made them look much neater. ?I can defintiely agree with the expectations not meeting abilities thing. ?

I have such a painting backup right now, I really can't afford to waste time, so I guess I should just be content that they are actually painted to some degree.

As a side note, I used Reaper Master Series Brown Liner for the first time to blackline, and it works really well.

My problem is ... welll..... everything. :p   Seriously, tho, I do the same thing as others have said, just put the mini down and work on another.  That would probably be why none of my armies are completely painted... :p
