And the final film ROTK really shrunk down some of the best scenes and the book and made a horrible "Hobbit-palooza"... I was ready to barf after some of the stonky hobbit scenes in ROTK.

I haven't read "The Hobbit" for many years and definitely not as an adult over the age of 18... ...but, I have fond memories of it and remembered thinking that it did an awful lot for such a little book and felt that it did as much with one little book as LOTR did with three. Of course, I was much younger then...

I agree with all those sentiments Maksim!  :D

Hi all, I regularly reread the Lord of the Rings in full - it's a bit of a journey, each time, something I look forward to. Not just yet; not yet; and then, one day, I decide it's time to start again. And I usually start off with The Hobbit. I read it first just before Univ, and kicked myself for not having discovered it earlier. I don't mind the different styles at all - in fact, although the Hobbit presents a rough ride for Bilbo, the darker tone of the Lord of the Rings fits the grimmer journey.
I also view the books as being related to the journals written by Bilbo and Frodo - different hobbits, different styles. Works for me. And the English is glorious! And did I mention I love the Silmarillion too? Compared to any classical mythology, it's grand. In my book, anyway.

As for Peter Jackson and the Hobbit: I was a bit upset when I heard that the Lord was being made into a film many years ago. The first glimpse of hope was when I heard the films were being made back to back: this meant for me the director was considering the work as one whole tale, not bits and pieces. And when the films finally appeared - well, I was curious to see the first, and then increasingly impatient for the others! I didn't quite like the changes to some characters (Arwen and Faramir in particular), and Frodo looked too young and thin for my taste (he's 50-ish in the book, although Hobbits age more slowly). But - still - I loved the films. And I admit I'd been looking forward to Smaug the dragon - his appearance over the mountain is one of tmy favourite scenes in the works of Tolkien. And I think Mr. Jackson would've done a fine job of it. So more's the pity.

O.Bloom was okay as Legolas. Peter Jackson casted in my opinion the correct cast for all parts. That includes the elf who says: 'Hello, Mister Anderson....I mean Aragorn....'

That would be Hugo Weaving, who made the tongue-in-cheek comment that he is only doing trilogies from now on.  :D

I'm like Van in that I periodically reread Lord of the Rings completely. I always start with The Hobbit and sometimes I'll finish with The Silmarillion. Lord of the Rings is hands down my favorite book. I first read it when I was 17 or 18 and have read it about a dozen times. I should have first read when I started playing D&D at age 14. A piece of LotR trivia: after the Bible, LotR is the most widely read book in the 20th century.

As for the movies, despite my complaints I absolutely love them. I remember watching the scene when Gandalf first reaches the crest of the hill in his cart, getting your first glimpse of the Shire and thinking that PJ nailed it perfectly. And the Balrog... jaw-droppingly awesome! For the most part the battles were great. My only complaint about the casting was Gimli. I really like John Rhys Davies, but he was too old to play Gimli, who was a young dwarf, not middle aged like the actor.

As for what I didn't like about the movies, among other things, I agree that PJ could have stuck more closely to the book without detracting from the movies.

o.k i just wanted too state for the record that i'm in the black horizon /vanvlak camp. really loved the movies that is, and reread the books often (hobbit too). i liked even the simirilian, for what it was, tho i admit it took me until i was older to really grasp it.
on the subject of not following the story close enough, i agreed after my first viewing in the theater, but i currently have all the extended versions on d.v.d.. if your truly a fan of the books and havn't seen these i highly recomend them. there is LOTS extra and it really picked up a few of the scenes i missed most. and i gotta disagree with d.s about john rice davies, i thought he did a great job as gimli, and how old is a young dwarf after all ? like 60 ?  :D

I also re-read the book periodically and love the movies though I do think some scenes could have been better and more true to the book. Illuvitar is right, the extended movies are much better at filling in the backstories and mythos.
The Hobbit is much more a childrens story, set in the same world, I enjoy it but not to the same extent, it's great for keeping the kids amused though
The Silmarillion is by far my favourite, that's the book I want to see a movie of. It does have that cobbled together feel in places unfortunatly, I wish he could have finished it properly himself.
By the way I have heard a rumour that the Beren/Luthian part of the story was being talked about, moviewise, has anyone else any update?

I think he got the sexual tension between Gimli and Legolas just right. Gimli is a female Dwarf isn't she?

I think its a pity Jackson doesnt get a shot at The Hobbit. I agree that the Ring films could have been better - BUT thats just because im too one of those who reread reguarly. The films will never capture what ive envisioned when reading, but they are good anyway -and I love the large battles!

One of the more disturbing parts in the move is that Gimli is made a clown - thats the only thing that really annoys me. Ive never thought of Tolkiens dwarfs as clowns.

I think that would change in the Hobbit...with multiple dwarves in the main party, and a whole army of em at the end!!  :D

They needed to doctor photos? Were you watching the same film as me?

(hmm.. maybe I borrowed the wrong DVD of Lord of the Rings)

Hi all,

I was really hoping PJ would direct- mainly because his vision of middle arth is so in tune with the images in my head, so this news is a real bummer :(

I found it realy difficult to get into the hobbit- started reaing it when I was about 9 or 10 and read the first chapter like 4 times, each time going " and another personb appears at the door.  And another.  And another And... Oh sod THIS!" and would read something else.  When I finally got down to it though I really enjoyed it and went straight into LOTR, never looking back :)

That's not necessarily PJ's fault. There are passages in the book that could easily be interpretted as Frodo and Sam being raging flamers.

By the end I was just egging them on. I'm not a filthy hobbit fancier, it was just so frustrating. Why couldn't they just get it on, we could have got on with the rest of the story then.
