Firstly, I acknowledge that development here has slowed down once more. I can only accept that this is because I have not been as active as I would like. As a way of making excuses, I had a car accident recently (not bad, but the insurance is a pain), am just about to buy my first house, my wife has changed jobs and the new term has started. All in all, a busy period. However, no threads have gone unnoticed or unread, and I have recorded thoses that I want to come back to and I will be looking at them as quickly as possible.

In other news, most of you will know that my Tau are currently in 'resin grey' - but at least they are in uniform!  :p

I was about to paint them blue... and then I saw this:

Ohhh, pretty!

So, I guess that mine will be purple and black.

Another thing. Does anyone have any recommendations for Human Auxiliary models - not GW?

I am looking for some human troops, with 'square' gubs (a la Pulse Carbines) and the distinctive 'square' block armour pads. Really, some human infantry which capture the feel of Tau Human auxiliaries.

Suggestions? Thanks.

@CS,

Are the Centuria Legionare Infantry from E/W not close enough? ?They have squar-ish weapons and the shoulder pads are "kind of" blocky. ?Maybe could accentuate this more with the right paint job?

Their helmets are a bit "different", but could just be a leftover from their PDF days. ?The squad commander has a pretty Tau-ish looking helmet, though there are only 30 in the pack. ?Maybe E/W could be convinced to cast up a bunch of just that guy.

Edit:  Just to make things easier, a link.

How are things going with the Tau, CS? Haven't heard anything else on this for a while. Are we even close to a finalisation of the list?

On the army "book" design etc - I have the photos and unit datasheets for the miniatures/list section on my to do list - that is, if everyone is happy to have my minis as the basis for that section....??? If you have other pictures to use send them on over. Is there anything else you wish to put in that section, CS?

On the human auxilia, personally I'd go with the dark realm human light infantry and bung a bit of putty/ plastic card on them for shoulder pads

Well, my Barracudas arrived this morning. Yay!  :D

The direction of the list is something that I have been giving a lot of thought to recently. My conclusions are that we are probably not so close to a 'finalised' list - mainly because I dont really believe that any list is really finished. With the pressure of SG off of these fan-driven lists, I dont know if there will ever be a divide between the 'work in progress' list and the 'official' list which has comments on it.

That said, the current development seems to have spawned a number of issues. My feeling now is that I dont want to further distract from the current points. Therefore, any new issues which are raised will need to be shelved for a future development, and I would like to concentrate on getting the current threads resolved. This is why there are so many pinned here. I will work through the unpinned threads first and hope to resolve these quickly, we can then move on to thepinned topics and drop them as they are sorted out. If no new items are considered (or at least held back in consideration), then this should leave result in a time when everything is discussed, which will form a natural point for an update. Then, rinse and repeat.

For the 'showcase' version of the list, I set up a thread for the mini pictures, and anyone who posted a picture there is assumed to agree to its inclusion. Did I send you the version that I started work on for this?

I am still searching for my idea Human auxiliaries. DRM do come close... I will keep looking.

Thanks.

Doh! Personally, I thought we were close. Most things seem to work. Obviously there are a few issues, however, but I felt these weren't far off completion. Does no one else feel this way?

I dont really believe that any list is really finished
You may be right CS (marines are a good example here)but we need to aim for some timeframe for a conclusion or it will just drift into "always experimental".

Therefore, any new issues which are raised will need to be shelved for a future development
Excellent. I still think that we have the basic Tau list ready(or very near to it) and any "new" items could be made sub-lists like Nerroth's Gue'Senshi list - Vespids etc could be put into say a Tau mercenary list??(just an idea)...

We have to face it, there will be no minis for these things and consideration for later inclusion in the list only hampers progress of the current one.

I would like to concentrate on getting the current threads resolved
Cool! Now, does this mean you are just going to finish reading the current pinned items and make a personal decision on these or will we(community) still need to debate them again (the usual opinions and good/bad ideas that hamper forward motion) before we commit them to the next version?

Did I send you the version that I started work on for this?
Ooh! no but I'd love to take a look. Send it on over.

Perhaps I should qualify my opinions... It does depend on exactly what you mean by finished.

I am currently assuming that SG wont get much further with lists in development. This has the effect of getting rid of any deadline from us, and giving us a bit more freedom. I also assume that development will continue with stats being adjusted and new races and wargear added.

In this sense, the list (and any list, really), wont ever be finished. Counter to that, I do feel that the current version of the list isplayable and balanced. Therefore, in some sense, it is finished.

The real question here is: when do we draw a line under development and state that this is now complete - anything before was development, anything after is balance adjustment?

Or, perhaps more importantly, do we really care?

My view is that we have a list that is playable and relatviely stable. There are still a number of issues to examine, but most of these are to bring things in line with background, or balance the different units, or streamline the special rules.

I will look at the currently unpinned threads, respond to those that need it, pin those which require further debate (and at no point are the EA Tau community going to be excluded from any decision) and reference any which are resolved.

I would like to add the Vespids, but I think that they should wait for a later stage of the list. In some sense, I would almost like to exclude any non-Tau units and look only at the core stats and force, get that balanced and tuned, and then add the auxiliries one at a time... but development has already taken these additional races to a point that they are doing OK.

All the best.

I'd be tempted to draw a line under development at this point with a consolidated V5.0.

Then development can begin anew on a new generation of additions (Like balance ajustments, new aux etc).

I agree 100% with CS's comments on how things progress with SG, I think Swordwind was the last official supplement we're getting.  Whatever is on the SG site in the experimental section is as official as it gets.  I think the development vs balancing debate isn't really one worth having - balancing is just making smaller changes than development.

I think E&C's on the right lines there, a WIP/discussion list based on 4.4 with changes folded into it and pinned would give us a clean sheet for discussions.  That's not to say it should be considered balanced and playable or in any way final but it would give us a better frame of reference.  Possibly include alternate profiles for units still in the balance?  Split it into categories of finished, nearly there, needs sorting and experimental rather than using the current list structure?  Just some ideas.

I believe we are still in development, although we are very close to finishing. There are two big development issues left: 1) fire warriors and 2) auxiliaries. They are likely to have a big impact -- when we mess with the FW statline, we are affecting with how people build their Tau armies. Ditto for the auxiliary selection limits.

Once that's done, I'd say we're done with development and the only work left is to address balance issues (like the 100 point Orca abuses, how to nerf the pathfinders and so forth).

I think that if anything, work should now go into consolidating the list (which is in good shape) with fluff (JimmyGrill's Third Sphere campaign is an excellent - and relevant - choice) and possibly an additonal list or two (like one for the 1st Kleistians, perhaps? Also, we could see if one of the ACs looking after another variant list - such as Alaitoc - could be swayed into adding their list to the mix... since it wouldn't surprise me to see a world or two 'visited' by the Starstriders long before the Third Sphere even reaches it!) into a supplement, titled:

Epic: Third Sphere

Time to get things moving, and get a supplement sent to SG and the ERC.

We have the models, we have the lists, we have the fluff - let's get our act together and make the Tau'va proud!

Aye, I did point out a while ago that the fluff in the 'collector's' section on the variant tanks is wrong, as they are in fact the latest variants of the Hammerhead, not old outdated ones as stated.

I agree with Asaura, we're still in development.  We can probably call the list 'finished' with the decision on the Fire Warriors and Aux.  Everything else seems to have stabilized pretty well.

E&C:  If the 'new' Hammerheads are so great, which one(s) would you pick over a conventional Railhead or Ionhead, and why?

We'd have to write non-congruent stats for those turrets in Epic, because they flat-out SUCK in 40k.  There's no turret weapon option I'd rather have than an Ion Cannon except the Fusion Cannons, and a Railgun's still better than those (just comparing range/damage, not points costs, because they're ALL overpriced).
