By all the gods if it looks half as good in reality as it does in that picture, its FANTASTIC.

I'd love some... :p

So far, I am probably further away from having a real Epic scale Monolith in my hands than any of you. So far, it's all just virtual stuff on a virtual picture.

:O ?:O ?
You mean that the attached picture is pure CGI!?! ?With the out of focus bits, photo realism, and perfect lighting?!? ?You had me completely fooled! ?I thought I was looking at a finished product!
:O ?:O ?

Out of curiosity, what software do you use? ?Blender?

Thanks for the kind words :). All done in 3ds max, rendered using VRay.

Update on the whole thing:

I split the main body part in two to avoid the undercuts where the weapons are supposed to be placed... See the pic:

Also, I now have definitive access to a 3D ABS plastic printer. I prepared the model for the printer to get me something that I can directly make a mold from (ie not 10 single parts but just one)... Still, I have doubts concerning that stupid diamond on top the Monolith: It's actually getting wider to the top, so I might get some problems getting this version out of the mold. I'll just see and try. Whatever... According to the feedback, I have asked for two versions of that thing: One is the original, the other one's 120% the size of it. I'll just take a look at both and see which one works best. Again, see the picture for what I'm talking about (btw, the lines on the ground of all pictures are supposed to be exactly 100 mm apart from each other, just to get a better idea of the scale again). As soon as I've got some photos of the real thing, I'll let you know.

Thanks again for the continued support and interest... Especially to Moscovian, who has been giving me a lot of information concerning the whole casting process. :)

I find it unlikely you'll get that crystal out of the mold... I'd break it off and cast it as a seperate piece myself.

Another update... First of all, the scale of the model got messed up during the process of exporting it to the format the printer needs. I got that sorted out, but that resulted in the guy being responsible for the printer just scaling it down somewhat, so I ended up with a model that's too big. No big deal, as I can just get him the right version.

The real problem is that during the printing process not only detail is lost but also some kind of weird structure is applied to the surface... I don't really know what to do about that, the only solution that I came up with so far is to refine the model by hand. Maybe just applying some glue would suffice to get rid of the structure? I don't know.

Especially the first picture shows that weird structure (look at the teleporter door...). Sorry for the quality, I don't own a good cam for macro pictures and the plastic is just too white ;). All in all I don't know whether to call this a success or a failure - the quality isn't good enough for a cast, but the model may be something to work with. I'll probably just cast the whole thing in the "real" size to see how that turns out before deciding what to do next.

Dude, that's a SUCCESS all the way!

To get rid of those stripes/grooves a little Green Stuff applied like spackle would probably fill them in and then you'd have a much smoother master for your casting.

Good luck with the next step!

Aye, a little Green Stuff work should be enough to smooth out the ridges that have been left... I'd say that's far from a failure! :D

Far and away a success!

Even as obssesive compulsive as I am, if I had Monoliths like that, I think I could overlook the ridges.

WOW! I agree that it's a total success. I'm sure you could smooth out the surface without too much trouble. My only concern sre the undercuts on the gauss flux gun ports at the corners of the 'top' part. You still have a substantial undercut there. I would suggest you make the cut at the very top of the gun ports so that the top part has a flush bottom when it's seperated from the bottom. Did that make sense?

Amazing work.  The bit I like most about it is how the top section peice looks like it can be used as an obilisk.  Get an extra one on the sprue and you hyave two tanks! :D
