So, in an attempt to kill two birds with one stone, I participated in a 3000 point "Mud Marine" game with the latest Eldar changes.

Might not get it done tonight, but here's the teaser!   :D

Rules Used

All experimental rules (except air rules)
Eldar 1.8

Space Marine Changes:

1) Cost changes (+/-25 points)
- Vindicator det, 275 (-25)
- Predator det, 275 (-25)
- Land Raider det 375 (-25)
- Terminator det 350 (+25)
- Landing Craft 375 (+25)

2) Speed upgrades (+5cm)
- Vindicator, 25cm
- Attack Bike, 35cm

3) FF upgrades (1 better)

Setup

4x6 table
Marines chose edge deployment.

Garrisons and Deployment

Marines kept the Terminator Detachment in reserve.

Biel-Tan kept the Aspect Warhost and Windriders 2 in the Wraithgate.

Marines garrisoned the Land Speeders on overwatch just in front of the Marine deployment zone.

Biel-Tan garrisoned both Ranger Troupes on either side of the Wraithgate, on overwatch.

Remaining deployment as shown below:

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan

Swords of Vaul 2 double forward, moving fully forward to pop-up and blast the Whirlwinds. ?The Land Speeders use overwatch fire to suppress on of the Fire Prisms, but 1 Whirlwind is destroyed.

Swords of Vaul 1 performs a similar manoeuvre, targeting Tactical Detachment 1, and blowing away their 2 Vindicators (so much for testing Vindicators!)

The Land Raiders advance on SoV2, get three hits? and the Eldar make three saves!

Guardian Warhost 1 marches directly forward, sticking to cover.

Warhound 1 doubles to bring the Aspect Troupe into sight, and blasts apart 1 Dark Reaper and 1 Falcon.

The Aspect Troupe advances on their attacker and strips away 2 Void Shields.

Tactical 1 doubles and fires on Ranger Troupe 1, staying just out of overwatch range, killing a single team of Eldar sneaks.

The Cobra advances on Warhound 1, powers up? and places a single Blast marker.

The Tactical HQ advances on SoV1, takes out a Fire Prism, breaking the Eldar tank formation.

Windriders 1 zip forward on a double to fire on Warhound 1, breaking the Titan, which holds its ground.

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on Ranger Troupe 1 and kill another Ranger.

Guardian Warhost 2 marches up the flank, nearing the mountain pass.

Warhound 2 advance and fires everything at SoV1, taking out 2 Fire Prisms and a Firestorm, easily shattering their morale.

Ranger Troupe 2 doubles forward and fires on the Land Speeders to no effect.

The Wraithgate hums open and the Aspect Warhost jumps forward to engage Tactical 1. ?Ranger Troupe 2 as well as Warhound 2 and the Land Speeders are all in range to support. ?The Eldar lose 2 Warp Spiders and 1 Swooping Hawk, while the Marines lose 2 Tactical Squads, a Hunter and a Rhino? the Eldar narrowly manage to win, pushing the Marines back.


Ranger Troupe 1 attempts to marshal, and even the nearby victory of the Autarch fails to inspire them and they fail and break. (That's *one* failed Supreme Commander re-roll!)

End of Turn: The Whirlwinds fail to remove any Blast markers, but all other Marine formations rally.

Swords of Vaul 1 and Ranger Troupe 1 both fail to rally.

Turn 2

The Terminators teleport in near the Warrior Troupe, receiving a Blast marker for their trouble, while the Avatar roars to life right behind them?



Strategy roll: Marines

The Terminators stomp forward to engage the intermingled Cobra and Aspect Troupe. ?It's a vicious fight: only a single Terminator Squad is taken out, while the Cobra suffers 1DC damage and only the Reaper Exarch survives as the Marine easily win.

Warhound 1 hesitates and then doubles to fire on Swords of Vaul 2, placing a single Blast marker.

The Avatar rages forward to engage the Terminators. ?The Eldar godling suffers 2DC damage and manages to take out 1 Terminator, barely winning the combat.

Again the Aspect Warhost engages Tactical 1, destroying 1 Rhinos and 2 Razorbacks, while taking no losses of their own, sending the surviving Marines packing. ?The Swooping Hawks jump forward to get the Whirlwinds in their scout zone of control.


Guardian 2 then doubles towards Warhound 2 and takes down 1 Void Shield.

Warhound 2 advances away and fires on Ranger Troupe 2, placing a single Blast marker.

The Land Raiders then rev forward to engage Ranger Troupe 2! ?Four Rangers are blasted down, but they do manage to sniper 1 Land Raider, but the Marines still handily win.


Guardian Warhost 1 doubles into cover to fire on the Tactical HQ and takes out 1 Razorback.

Windrider Troupe 2 races out of the Wraithgate to engage the Land Raiders, with the support of Guardian Warhost 1. ?The Marines get a bit of support from the nearby Land Speeders. ?(I made a crucial mistake here in not declaring an intermingled assault against the Land Raiders and Speeders? I think I've got to turn in my King of Intermingling crown? *sigh*) ?To the utter shock of the Marines, the Land Raiders are wiped out without inflicting a single casualty on the Eldar.


Inspired by their comrades' victory, Windrider 1 engages Warhound 1, with the support of the Avatar and SoV1? they drop a single Void Shield and lose 2 Jetbikes as the Titan beats them? breaking the Avatar and grav-tanks as well!



The Land Speeders advance on Guardian Warhost 1, catching them in a crossfire, a baking 2 Guardians and 1 Heavy Weapon, for a total of 5 Blast markers.

The Tactical HQ then engages the nearby Guardians! ?They lose 3 Razorbacks and their Hunter while crushing 2 Guardians, 2 Support Platforms, and 1 Wraithguard? it's a close fight, but the Marines win by "1"?


End of Turn: Tactical 1 fails to rally, as do Guardian Warhost 1 and Windrider 1. ?Despite all the rallying, the Eldar still hold on to a lot of Blast markers. (Lack of Spirit Stones was really felt in this game!)

Turn 3

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Marines

Warhound 1 advances on the Eldar Blitz and blows away the Cobra without breaking a sweat.

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on Windrider 2, taking out 1 unit of Jetbikes.

With a loud battlecry, the Aspect Warhost engages the intermingled Whirlwinds and Tactical HQ?

It's a ferocious battle, the Whirlwinds are wiped out, 3 Tactical Marine squads are torn apart, while the Eldar lose 2 Warp Spider squads, including the Exarch.  Despite all this, the Eldar only manage to win by "1".

The Autarch screams at Windrider 2 to engage the broken Tactical HQ, but they just can't seem to get going and regroup instead, clearing 3 Blast Markers (That's 2 failed Supreme Commander re-rolls!).

The Terminators double over the hill to hose Windrider 1 with their Assault Cannons, taking out the Vyper and 2 Jetbikes and claiming Eldar Objective 1.

Guardian Warhost 2 doubles forward to fire ineffectively on the Land Speeders and claim Marine Objective 1.

The Land Speeders double, forming a dispersed, protective semi-circle around the Eldar Blitz, firing on and breaking SoV1 in the process.

Ranger Troupe 2 doubles to contest Marine Objective 2 and fires ineffectively on Warhound 2.

Warhound 2 doubles away to fire on SoV2, taking out 1 Firestorm and 1 Fire Prism, breaking the formation.

Ranger 1 tries to sustain fire on the Land Speeders, but they freak out and break instead.

Realizing the battle is almost lost, the nearly forgotten Dark Reaper Exarch of the Aspect Troupe advances slightly to contest the Eldar Blitz and blows a Land Speeder out of the sky for good measure!

End of Turn:   The same poor buggers on both sides fail to rally!

Biel-Tan 1 (T-n-H) vs Marines 0 (none)

(My opponent totally thought he had me 2-1 with Blitz and T-n-H, but after asking about the Dark Reaper Exarch at the start of the turn, he completely forgot about it!  *laugh*)

Turn 4

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Marines

The Terminators advance to consolidate their position and fire on Windriders Troupe 2, placing 1 Blast marker.

The Warp Spiders perform another engage against the broken Tactical 1, wiping out the demoralized Marine detachment, and move to pursue the Tactical HQ.

Windrider Troupe 2 jets forward to engage the Tactical HQ? and winds up getting blasted out of the sky without inflicting a single hit on the triumphant Marines!

Warhound 1 advances on the Reaper Exarch and wipes out the last remnant of the Aspect Troupe.

Ranger Troupe 1 attempts to sustain fire again and again they freak out and break, even with the Autarch trying to encourage them and they just hide in the Cathedral. (That was *three* failed Supreme Commander rolls!  My opponent asked me, "Why do you even bother spending points on that anymore?")

The Land Speeders double to fire on SoV 2, breaking them.

Guardian Warhost 2 double to stretch itself out, still claiming the Marine Objective, and fire on the Terminators to place a Blast marker.

Warhound 2 doubles around the mountain, to contest Marine Objective 2.

In an attempt to clear their objective, Ranger Troupe 2 prepares to engage the Warhound? then thinks better of it and just moves into cover? *sigh*


End of Turn:

Biel-Tan 0 (T-n-H) vs Marines 3 (Blitz, BTS, T-n-H)

Excellent batrep. ?How do you feel about the changes to the Marines and the Eldar? ?It certainly seemed to be a tight game in most respects.

And aren't "Mud Marines" not supposed to teleport? ???

First off:


Hawks jump forward to get the Whirlwinds in their scout zone of control.


Very clever! When I originally saw the SH in that troupe, Iwondered why you'd do something like that, but now see the wisdom.

My initial impression of this battle is that it was a lot closer than the points indicated. A couple of Eldar activations that went the other way would have yielded very different results. Which I think is important to note in that, a 3-0 because of a few botched activations is a lot different story than a 3-0 and you don't have any units left.

Other points that left an impression is that the SM player either allowed or you were successful in penetrating deeply into his lines (e.g. you getting the WW's in the SH scout range), which if true also indicates that a few rolls to the other side might have allowed you to fragment his forces further.

Also, I know why people tend to split up their Warhounds, but as someone who faces them a decent amount of the time, I think they are a much tougher force to reckon with, even taking into account the loss of activation, when they are doubled up.

Opinions vary.  Discussion in the challenge thread.

3000 points/1 termie formation teleporting counts as mud marine to me.

2) Can armour-heavy, ground only armies work?
3) Can mostly ground with a bit of air / teleportation work?

Really, I think there?s only a problem if 3) and maybe 1) don?t work.  In the case of 2) - well, Marines are not the Imperial Guard.

Since I didn't ask this question here (asked it in the challenge thread), what did the Marines do right, vs what went wrong for the Eldar (obviously not getting those activations was a factor, but what else went wrong from the Eldar PoV)?

Yes, very well put.

I would say "yes", to both 1 & 3. Are they easy to do, not necessarily, but I'm not seeing the big handicaps that I originally thought I would.

I will play a non-Mud force vs. Mud whenever possible though.
