This is a rather quick question: I'm moving slow and am currently rather busy, but the idea of a Necron army is still moving around in my head. Now my problem is that I do not have a Necron army for 40K and therefore lack the references needed to rebuild the smaller Epic models - I can use pictures from the Codex and the 'net, but although they suffice when it comes to the detail of the model itself, I'm having problems with the appropriate scale of the models.

Anyway, as I suck at modelling "real" stuff, I plan to do it all in 3D, make a real model out of the data using the machine we've got at our uni and then reproduce that master using silicone moulds. The first step is about halfway done for the Monolith (which is kind of the test case if that method works with "big" models), I just need some advice on the size of the model. Picture is attached, any comments of any kind would, as always, be greatly appreciated.

Holy crap, those look great! ?Now I'm all depressed about mine.

Here's my WIP version:

The Monolith should be about as wide as a Land Raider, and twice as tall. ?Once I get the side fins on mine, and the back fin, it'll be even bigger.

The simple method to use is use the 40k - Epic scale ratios.

40k is 30mm scale.

Epic is 6mm scale.

30 / 6 = 5

So shrink the model's dimentions by 5 times?

On another note, I wish I had access to a CAD laser-sculpting rig. :)

Yikes!  That is beyond sweet.

Like tv said, the monolith is about the same dimensions at the base as a Landraider and about as tall as it is wide, plus the littel vanes that stick up.  Your model might be just  a hair small but with that kind of quality I'd tell anyone who said anything to take a flying leap.

Plus, that's totally a nine-piece Monolith. :D

That is just beautiful!  Necrons live!

I'm betting, if you try to cast it, it's going to be a pain.

Maybe you need to talk with Netepic about who does the casting for Exodus Wars!

Professional casting facilities, meet professional grade Monolith. :D

Maybe the trick would be to make them available as individual unidentifiable pieces.  Of course, that would mean breaking up the main section into inconspicuous components.

Ye Gods that thing is beautiful.

I'll take two dozen and legal repercussions be damned.

That's awesome! I would scale it up just a smidge. I don't know what you're capable of for casting, but you might have a hard time with some of those wee details and potential undercuts. Then again, it looks like you have a better idea of what you're doing than I do.  :D

Check out the 9-piece breakdown beside the monolith... doesn't look like there's any undercuts there...

Looks like some where the Gauss Flux Arc "turrets" go, but I could be wrong.

The real issues in casting those parts would be getting the resin into those tiny little projections - and keeping air bubbles out. Plus the small flat parts might be hard to cast with a thin flat face. Nonetheless, give it a go and see how it turns out!

Wow, lots of replies... Thanks for all the feedback guys :)

The simple method to use is use the 40k - Epic scale ratios.
40k is 30mm scale.
Epic is 6mm scale.

30 / 6 = 5
So shrink the model's dimentions by 5 times?

Heh, that's probably right... But as I said, I do not have a Necron army for 40K so I lack the references needed. If somebody has a 40K scale Monolith at home or something, I would be really, really thankful for the dimensions of that thing - something like "the 40K Mon' is about 20 cm wide and 25 cm tall". So far I used the pictures from the Codex which show the Monolith with some infantry units in front of it, making my measurements something like "the 40K Mon' is about as wide as 5 40K Necron Warriors are tall, so with Epic being a 6mm scale game, the Epic Mon' should be 6 * 5 = 30 mm wide" which isn't accurate at all :-/

Like tv said, the monolith is about the same dimensions at the base as a Landraider and about as tall as it is wide, plus the littel vanes that stick up.
I am currently doing a foreign semester in Ireland and left all my Epic stuff at home, so I haven't even got some Land Raiders for comparison. In fact, the only things I took with me were the E:A rulebook, Swordwind and the Necron Codex - which all lack 1:1 pictures ;). Thanks for the idea though :).

you might have a hard time with some of those wee details and potential undercuts.
Looks like some where the Gauss Flux Arc "turrets" go, but I could be wrong.
Whops... Guess it'll become a 10-part Monolith then :D. Simply didn't notice, thanks for the hint :).

Then again, it looks like you have a better idea of what you're doing than I do.
No. Definitely not.

Just to clarify some things: This Necrons-for-Epic project isn't even a real project but more an experiment. I have never casted anything before. I haven't even used one of those fancy 3D laser printers. What I have done is making it sure that I have access to what I need theoretically (which is access to one of those sculpting machines and a silicone casting machine) but I haven't tried it yet. I wanted to try if that pipeline (computer -> model -> mould -> some more models) worked at all and this is the way I'm doing that - I'm actually hoping to get something like a Necron army out of it (because if I didn't have a "real" goal I'd probably stop working on the whole idea before being even halfway through) but that's still far away.

So far, I am probably further away from having a real Epic scale Monolith in my hands than any of you. So far, it's all just virtual stuff on a virtual picture. I really appreciate all your feedback as it is an essential part of what keeps me going at all, but it's way too early to even toy with the thought of having a mass produced Epic scale Monolith. This whole thing might just as well not work at all. As there seems to be some interest in this, I'll keep you updated about what's happening, but please don't expect anything at all as you might end up being disappointed.
