Cybershadow,
That is one of my favourite statements so far! Finding the time is the big problem. I am sure that I could churn out passable minis given a couple of months to 'warm up.' But I just dont get that consistent amount of time. |
I used to have that problem - not enough time!
Now I've discovered that if I discipline myself, I can finish things in small batches of about 20 to thirty minutes. The trick is to separate the work into small "do-able" chores.
Here is the job list for the Jopallis so far, for instance:
Monday - 30 minutes: Cut minis off sprue. File and clean up where necessary.
Tuesday - 15 minutes: Cut minis off sprue. File and clean up where necessary. Tuesday - 15 minutes: Lay out the minis near their bases to make sure I have enough and arrange them in patterns of five.
Wednesday - 15 minutes: Glue the minis on their bases. Wednesday - 15 minutes: Begin adding texture to the bases.
Thursday - 30 minutes: Continue adding texture to the bases.
Friday - 30 minutes: Prime the whole batch.
Sunday - 30 minutes: Lay down a quick sloppy base coat of primary color.
Monday - 30 minutes: Paint the bases Beasty Brown.
Tuesday - 30 minutes: Use a toothbrush to sprinkle thinned out white paint on stands.
Wednesday - 30 minutes: Ink the stands.
Thursday - 30 minutes: Paint in flesh details.
Friday - 30 minutes: Paint in helmets and boots.
Sunday - 30 minutes: Paint rifles.
Monday - 30 minutes: Touch up beasty brown bases and lay down a final black wash (black paint mixed with water I have in a big jar.).
Roughly two weeks later: DONE!
It seems like a lot of work, but when broken down into 30 minutes sections, it's very manageable. On some days, I work a little longer than 30 miniutes until I get "modelled out."
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

That is a really nice idea, Maksim, but my life is never that easy!
I can usually structure things ok for about two weeks and get back into painting, but then something else will come up and take up all my time for a while. For example, this last two weeks I have had work to do until about 1am each night!
Hopefully, I will be able to sort things out next month and set aside painting (and web updating) time. I am going to set aside TV/movie/painting time for me and the misses.
Cheers.

I hope Maksim does not take offense, but mine never goes like his. Here is how mine would go.
Here is the job list for an army done the dafrca way :
Monday - 20 minutes: Cut minis off sprue. File and clean up where necessary. Monday - 10 minutes: Lost time spent as I fight off sleep as I am doing this at 11:30 pm.
Tuesday - 05 minutes: Cut minis off sprue. File and clean up where necessary. Tuesday - 05 minutes: Stop bleeding. Get help with band-aid for thumb. Get aspirin for pain. Tuesday - 05 minutes: Finish cut minis off sprue. File and clean up where necessary. Tuesday - 14 minutes: Lay out the minis near their bases to make sure I have enough and arrange them in patterns of five. Tuesday - 01 minute: Admire army and think how nice it will be once done.
Wednesday - 01 minute: Come back to find bases and minis scattered both on desk and floor along with cat hair. Wednesday - 01 minute: Think about killing cat. Hold back because I love my wife. Wednesday - 13 minutes: Pick up bases and minis. Search for missing 3 troopers and two missile launchers. Find two at bottom of floor furnace. End up not doing one formation because I can not find all of the minis I would need. Wednesday - 15 minutes: Begin adding texture to the bases.
Thursday - 05 minutes: Pick Cat Hair out of texture, yell at cat who looks at me with dumb stare. Thursday - 25 minutes: Continue adding texture to the bases.
Friday ?- 01 minutes: Get ready to prime the whole batch. Friday ?- 01 minutes: Realize primer is dried out and I need a new can. Friday ?- 13 minutes: Run to store for new can. Friday ?- 05 minutes: Get back. Fight wind to keep figures on cardboard. Friday ?- 01 minutes: Decide to spend an extra 20 minutes to make up for lost ground. Friday ?- 01 minutes: Take out trash to make wife happy. Friday ?- 28 minutes: Prime the whole batch.
Saturday ? Do Honey-Do List (Daydream about minis)
Sunday - 20 minutes: Lay down a quick sloppy base coat of primary color. Sunday ? 05 minutes: Stand Guard over wet paint. Fail to hear cat jump up behind me? Sunday ? 05 minutes: Pick Cat Hair from wet paint.
Monday: Work until 8:00 PM and fail to paint figures.
Tuesday - 29 minutes: Paint the bases Beasty Brown. Tuesday - 01 minute: Do happy dance as the cat is no where to be seen.
Wednesday ? Take Family to Grandparents house, do not return home until 9:30 pm, fail to paint anything.
Thursday - 30 minutes: Wife and Child go to mall ? Run out to desk and use a toothbrush to sprinkle thinned out white paint on stands. Return to house to finish new Honey-Do list.
Friday - 01 minute: Spill Ink, I was going to use to Ink the stands. Friday - 01 minutes: Give Praise to God that I had forgotten to gather up the old newspapers and at least most of the Ink spilled onto pile and not carpet. Friday - 05 minutes: Clean up Ink & Newspapers. Can not believe there is no Ink on carpet. Friday - 01 minutes: Check to make sure I did not mark carpet. Give further praise to God that there is no marks at all. Friday - 22 minutes: Ink the stands too heavy, but do not care because I need to get to bed, it is now 11:40 pm....
Saturday - 120 minutes: Paint in flesh details between activations. Miss the shift in Tyranid army focus and loose game. Still smile because I got the faces done! Tyranid player confused when I look so happy.
Sunday ? Go to family Dinner, no figures today :-(
Monday - 05 minutes: Hunt down Cats and lock them outside. Monday - 24 minutes: Quickly paint in helmets and boots. Monday - 01 minutes: Let cats back in.
Tuesday ? Work late (9:00 pm) ? Tuesday - 05 minutes: Pick up figures off floor again. Cats do get even...
Wednesday - 30 minutes: Paint rifles.
Thursday ? Work late and come home to sick child. Sit up til 11:30 pm holding sick child, crash. Thursday ? Figures, what figures?
Friday - 30 minutes: Touch up beasty brown bases and lay down a final black wash. Friday - 01 minutes: Throw stuff at cat. Friday - 01 minutes: Admire work. Spot many flaws but still smile because at least they are not grey raw plastic on black raw bases.
Roughly three weeks later: DONE! Well sort of, need to clean up some spots where colors crossed over because of painter rush. Well and the missing formation...
Ah the life...

I am glad to hear it.
I just was reading your list and I thought it would be fun to do my version. ?

Yes, there is green grass on both sides of that fence.
However, I know I am blessed.

Very well. It has been used with joy by the receiver. In fact I am going to let someone else type for a moment:
thank you maksim madeline

Oh man, I can't believe I did that. I will try harder oh great and mighty GSC. ?

LOL- a lot ?
Isn't it amazing Dafrca, that 2 people who have never met can live so identically when it comes to balancing lives and wives around painting?!
Nice one, I shall chuckle for awhile...

dafrca | And what about the cat hair?
Well I can forgive my Girlfriends rabbit now, after hearing what you go through.
All that did was take a liking to my trousers whilst I was inking. It bit me, I jumped and spilled the ink all over me as I was sat on the couch. Luckily non spilt onto it, just my clothes.
I dont mind painting,as I said before. My worst problem is that I'm slow. I like every line to be perfect, and no over lapping etc. It therefore slows me down.
As I dont play as often as I'd like, I paint my minis up to a showcase standard. (or my version of it )

ShadowHunter,
Are there any places online where your work is displayed?
I'm sure I've asked this before, but I can't remember or find the answer!
Please also forgive my lasiness for not searching every gallery of which I know!

No, I have nothing online yet.
I still don't have access to a digital camera.
I did use a rubbishy camera once, but the results were really poor. The image was blurry, and all the best detail was lost.
My recent models are improving all the time too.
My favourite models are currently:
- My Lord of Change (LoC) - Lord on Disk of Tzeentch - My Iynaden Avatar - Ork Warboss - Phoenix Lords
- Overall I probably like the LoC the best.
For my BFG collection, I haven't gone to any great lengths to paint them and have just kept them to simple jobs. My Epic pieces are pretty much the same as I hardly ever get to play with them (and then when I do, it's against myself... at least, I win again and again keeping my 100% victory record).
I am fond of my Epic Orks as I think their paintjob looks effective despite being simple. However, it's quite dark (I'm not fond of the cartoony colours sometimes used for Orks) and so I don't know how they would show up on photos. I go for a metallic/rusty effect.

I _knew_ there was an upside of being allergic to cute furry things. Especially since my wife loves cats. Thank you dafrca for saving my day.
OTOH my schedule would be full of somebody yelling "Dad!", pushing two kids away to clear space for painting and silently saying "&X$#!" when one of them bumps at my elbow just as I was painting that small, critical spot...

As for "gamer friendly girls", being the suspicous guy I am, I am wary of women who seem to support your hobby, but secretly try to manipulate you otherwise. Since some are smart enough to know that direct confrontation may not be the answer. If they behave for at least a decade, I'd say your safe....maybe. |
Ooooh! I had a GF like that - she acted all interested and wanted to take part every time I had a game... turned out she was only concerned that whilst she wasn't around I might be sleeping around (please not that I have never two timed a girl) which is kinda hard to do at a wargames club. First of all, a major lack of women, and those that are there - well sex doesn't seem to be on there agenda...
The fact that when I played VOID it was always with guys also should have told her that I probably wasn't sleeping around.
Back on topic.... I go through phases, I will spend a day painting - then just not want to pick up the brush for weeks.

My 2 were the same way Mojarn. Now my 5yr old wants to paint with me. She has done all those "spare" minis and its good Daddy/Daughter time together. One ladraider she did is a nice "rainbow" accoridng to her and will be perfect is I ever do an Emperor's Children detachment!
There was some ruckus last week though when my new Slasher Gargant appeared in the mail - she liked it and wanted to paint it. There was no backing out of it . Now I have this hideous creation that makes me want to cry.
Of course I COULD strip it, but it would gut her. Talk about Moral dillemas!
