:(, LOTR seems just soo... plain to me.

I quite like some of the WFB models, especially painted in a darker, grittier fashion. It is only tuti fruti empire troops that freak me :D.

I agree.

With the exception of the trolls (which I really like), just about everything else is just a grim and dirty 'dark ages' figure. Even the orcs are just dark coloured humans. I want tabletop spectacle with colour.

Historical ancients gaming typically has more colour and variety than LOTR.

Have you seen the preview in the latest UK WD?

I looked at the swordmen unit and the only thing that I could think of was that they looked like a bunch of extras from a Wallace and Gromit movie!  :D

It is a strange thing, but if LotR was not LotR, then I would probably buy into it. From what I have heard, it is an excellent small action system, with some very interesting rules.

- Heroes. 'Nuff said. The game appears to revolve around heroes, and the other guys are just there to hold up the enemy line until a big sword can run over.

- Good always seems to win absolutely every battle report!

Bit of late but let me give my opinion on this.

a) LOTR isn't as bad rule system as people make it sound. Especially when it comes to sieges I have yet to find fantasy ruleset that is as much as fun(FB doesn't come even halfway).

b) your hero fear is tad extreme. Heroes biggest use is the heroic moves from might points and those are not infinite. Generic captains have 2, named heroes tend to have 3. Very few exceptions to this(Aragorn who can use 1 point per turn for free and Boromir who has 6 comes to mind. But Boromir either costs arm and teeth or has no Fate...). In combat they can rack up impressive casualties but eventually WILL run short(sooner or later they don't roll 6 and have run out of might). Aragorn is double tricky because of that free point of might but even he can be wore down(and of course if nothing else helps try mordor troll or two :D)

As for good winning every battle report...Which battle reports these are? WD's? They are joke anyway :D If you want to see battle report where they DON'T win(okay it was draw. Okay it was special scenario. But still :D) check http://www.abo.fi/~johner....rcs.pdf

Old battle report I made for competition. My first(and due to time issues only) game where Rohan was fielded.

But overall I like LOTR game though not as lineup and fight game ala FB. Rather specific scenarios with more interesting objectives than hack the enemy is my preference.
