I love the LotR miniature range  :(

But mainstream BFG, for the 40k kids would be nice.  :)

Before we go any further, GW already renew their contact to make more LotR a few months ago, Jervis even say that they broke even and than some with the copyright cost despite what many who dislike LotR (and of course GW blaming their stock fall during the summer due to misprediction of LotR sells amounts)

Unless Kirby get booted from office or the board make a decision, there is no dropping LotR despite whatever anyone else says.

It is a strange thing, but if LotR was not LotR, then I would probably buy into it. From what I have heard, it is an excellent small action system, with some very interesting rules.

My problems (and reasons for not getting into it... yet... although the combined rule book is tempting.... and I really like the Easterlings...):

- I have never been wild on LotR generally. And while some of the minis are quite nice, there doesnt seem to be the variety or consistancy to them.

- Heroes. 'Nuff said. The game appears to revolve around heroes, and the other guys are just there to hold up the enemy line until a big sword can run over.

- Good always seems to win absolutely every battle report!

That is about it. If they made it more generic, allowed lists from the main WH game, downpowered the influence of heroes a bit and balanced the two sides, I would probably pick it up.

Also, I am very sceptical of GWs expansion of the Tolkein universe. They seem to be putting together all sorts of speculation and people are going to assume that this is what 'really' happened in LotR. I am sure that they have done their homework, but the truth is that they are making stuff up that fits into their view of the LotR universe and their sales. This leaves a slightly bitter taste to me.

GW LotR expansions are quite good, Scouring of the Shire book is truly great.

The mini's are casted very well except a few (first Arwen). The (main) actors must approve of each mini representing them.
The standard troops are as good as the WHFB ones.
A noteworhty thing is that since LotR minis are produced the WHFB tendency is a more Comic look to the minis. LotR looking more realistic (in fantasy...)

The system is quite good and in the Battlegames for Middle Earth issues the bad guys did win a lot games.

And if you don't like the cool hero's start playing the battle companies addition. Small actions with small companies, gaining experience etc.

Couldnt agree more.
Any 'new stuff' writen by GW will firmly be to boost sale, concideration on weather or not it realy is in keeping with the true Lord Of The Rings will always take second place. Its such a classic it realy shouldnt be messed about with. Trouble is... GW should have concidered this fact before charging in and buying the rights. And where does it end? How far can GW stretch the fluff? I imagin those who play LOTRs are die hard fans of the novel and movies. How much 'new stuff, wil they aaccept before it is concidered too much. After all this new matiral is being written by people who first and fore-mostly want thier game to sell.
I realy cant beleive GW even bothered with it in the first place. Strikes me to be the same sorta mind-set I get when using Ebay when you realy dont want anyone else to have that item you bid on a week ago so you pay over the odds just to make sure you get it. That sorta behavour is fine by the likes of me.. but its a pretty shabby way to do thing in big bussiness. Anyone with half a brain could foresee LOTRs struggling after the inital excitment of the movies had died down. I wonder just how many people bought the game and by the times they'd played it a few times had lost the passion for movies, and so didnt bother with the game 'no matter how good the rulez are'
Futhermore I personly do not like the models either. I much prefer the chucky proportions of the WHFB and 40K heroic scale. You can name any LOTRs mini and theres a better looking WHFB equalivent :;):

The biggest problem with continued sales of LOTR is a twofold one, IMHO:

- As a LOTR game, it's likely to appeal to the 'hard core' LOTR fan.

- Yet at the same time, as a Wargaming system, it is very simplistic, lacking many of the elements that one would expect in a tabletop wargame, while other elements are (IMHO) over-simplified.


What results is a game system that does not actually appeal to its core audience; LOTR is left chasing 'passing trade' off of youngsters (At whom the rules system was targetted), to the exclusion of any long-term customers (Because they're not interested as the rules system is designed to be understood easily by 9-year olds).


Thus we had the LOTR 'bubble', which burst when the movies stopped coming out and the kids stopped enthusing over Balrogs, Boromir and Barad-Dur.

Another thing released by one of Games Workshops's subsidiaries was the 'Wild West' Historical Game. As I recall it was based on the LotR 'system, but essentially modelled typical Wild West gunfights and the like. From what I've heard of it, it's a brilliant wee game right up there with Blood Bowl in terms of 'lunch break' fun...

That said: I have to agree, for the most part, that whilst I find the idea of the LotR very interesting, and the look to be pretty much superior to Fantasy, I just can't immerse myself in it. It feels (and looks/sonds) like the only accessible depth is collecting multiple armies.

I'm not adverse to that, but like the Tau of the 40k Universe, I really do enjoy getting caught up in everything with them. However, as LotR is essentially already 'well thought out' any such immersion would be very widely recognised as 'hypothetical', wheras looking at various, say, Inquisitor Games, BFG Battles or even Epic Battles have a scope in 40k which allows you to truly immerse yourself in it. What you did could very well have been what actually happened.

In this respect, it's probably why I'm not so keen on WHFB as 40k for a 'setting'. 40k has much more vitality and 'breathing room' in it, I find.

PS The LotR minis are downright lovely. I bought the original Fellowship of the Ring and I have to say: the 9 of them are some of the most interesting and fun models GW have ever produced.

I tend to agree javelin.

The flip side is that I can be easier to convince people to play a game based on a well recognised licence.  This can be handy!

Yup - it's one of the WH historicals, and it's a bit of a cross between LOTR and Necromunda - I have the rules but b\never tried it - it looks like loads of fun.  :D  :cool:

Played the cowboys game a couple times in the excellent Whitewash city paper town!

Fun quick and dirty rules with just enough depth to be interesting.

Krooza, LotR has a lot better models then the comic book WHFB range.
