consectari: This isn't just a story, this is an Epic Scenario from Imperial Armour III, and it's meant to be winnable by the Marines.

Lion in the Stars: I think fair use covers this, and besides your scenario is 95% the same as the forces listed in IA:3 IIRC.

Small forces?  A reinforced company of Marines is a small force?  That's more than twice what you normally see on the 40k battlefield, in an infantry-heavy army!

As far as vastly onesided battles go, in the original scenario the first assault was roughly 3675 points of Tau, attacking 3150 points of Marines (not counting the costs of entrenchments, which is another 90 points).  The second assault is 3625 points of Tau attacking 3075 points of Marines (again, not counting cost of entrenchments, +98 points).  How is a 425 or 450 point advantage to the attacker vastly onesided?  That's only a 14 or 15% advantage in points in the attacker's favor.

The Assault scenario from Fanatic 13 gives the attacker a 50% advantage in mobile units, and a 20% advantage in points.  (A 2000 point defending force gets 500 points to spend on fortifications (making a total of 2500 'army points'), and the attacker gets 3000 points.)

I expect the Marines to win the Evacuation scenario, because the Tau do not have the local superiority they need to break the Marines (strictly theoryhammer).  If the Marines don't win this scenario using the current list, we have a serious problem.

Sorry, I was refering specifically to this scenerio & when I said small force, I actually meant smaller than their opponent.

I'd consider a 775 point Tau advantage significant.  The Tau drastically outrange the Marines as well.

I'm not saying it can't be done, as I've never played with or against Tau.  It just doesn't seem like the best way to demonstrate the needs of the Codex list.

Pitting them against an experimental army in a scenerio rather than a tournament style game just doesn't seem like the way to go.

I'm all for scenerios.  I feel that sticking exclusively to the Tournament style is too restrictive.  I DO feel tournament style is the way to go if you want to balance the list.

I'm on your side when it comes to improving the Codex list.  I'm really not trying to be argumenative, just trying to point out that I don't think this is going to achieve it's goal.  Nothing wrong with the scenerio from a stricly "gaming" perspective.

Strictly from a gaming perspective I'd love to play this scenario some time, as it's rather a cool one. I suspect the ending will not tally with the 'historical' result however. :)

OK, I can go with that reasoning.

Let me go post another challenge, then.
