I see Cyber Shadow is looking at WHFB.  I myself have been taking a peek at Warmaster.  Has anyone played much of it?  I love the look of the minis and I was wondering if it plays as well (or better).

I prefer it to WHFB. It's got a lot of Epic style features, in that regiments have to be activated individually. Orders have to be given by characters, who each have a command radius, and can only issue orders to regiments within that radius. It's a very good game, with lots of manouver, and requires careful thought.

There were one or two bugs that were ironed out by FAQs, but if you are not too bothered about magic, you could buy Warmaster Ancients, as all the rules updates were sorted for that book.

Heh.  No.  I own the rulebook and 2 armies but have never actually played the game...  :p

It is supposed to have a fluid, dynamic feel similar to epic with more command and control issues (as one might expect of medieval v modern warfare).  Having read the rulebook (a couple times because I'm that much of a geek), that description certainly seems to fit with the way I would expect them to play.

If you're comfortable asking, Pixelgeek used to play quite a bit and I asked him about it when I was trying to get a couple of friends to try it out with me.

You could always go to the Warmaster SG board and do one of those "So, tell me about this game, guys..." threads.

Warmaster is a solid rules set (I actually have this one!). However, there are a couple of things that dont sit right with me - *looks around and waits for someone to come along and complain about Knights that just wont stop charging*!

I have not played it much, but it does seem to be a very interesting game with some good tactical traits to it.

When I finally drag my rear down to the local club, I guess I'll see if anyone plays it.  Then if so I'll give it really serious consideration.  Doesn't seem too expensive (in GW world anyway!)

Just thought I'd get the lowdown from some non-fanboys first

I'm guessing CS is referring to the fact that combats, once started, are played on until one side wins. And the fact that if you destroy your opponent in the first round of combat, you can over-run, and with cavalry this can easily see you involved in another combat!
You can end up with a couple of units right over the far side of the board, before your other regiments have even started moving. This is definitely a bit weird, but the game is still enjoyable.

That said, if we just adopted the movable-characters-with-command-radius thing for Epic, you'd have a near perfect game....IMHO, at least!

I think I saw the complaint about units charging on forever when I searched TMP's forum but I've also seen mention of a fix in a rules update or FAQ.  I've only got the latest rulebook on the SG site and I've not read much yet so I don't know the exact details.

The eternal assault has been removed in Warmaster Ancients, you stop after 2 rounds of combat.

I'm sure there is a yahoo group for warmaster that have converted the fantasy armies to the ancients system.

The army lists have been changed recently but I don't know if a rules review is underway.

And does anyone else have blitzkreig commander? This is a WWII clone of warmaster that I've picked up but never played!

One thing that I thought about recommending is to pick up the Warmaster Ancients rule books, since it is really Warmaster Second Edition. I dont think that there would be any problem with then downloading the Warmaster rule book and using the WM lists for the Ancients rules game. Would this work? It seems that it would then benefit from a marginally stronger rules set.

All the Warmaster army lists are available for download separately, so you could do this quite easily. However, you would have to forego the magic rules, unless you were prepared to have both rulesets and work from both. That said, magic is so minimal in Warmaster that you can easily play without it altogether.

Yes, this all reminds me. ?Most of the discussions on TMP are about Warmaster Ancients rather than Warmaster and I know what?s confusing me ? I believe those changes were implemented for Battle of Five Armies, rather than a Warmaster v2.

Ok then, what about the armies themselves? ?Any to really avoid? ?One problem I?ve always had with Fantasy is choosing an army ? I can see things I like I a lot of armies but stand out for me. ?I have a soft spot for Orcs but I?m not sure whether a horde of the buggers sitting around not doing what they?re told would really suit my playing style :D

Thoroughly enjoyable game.  We've fought battles with ancients vs fantasy armies with no problems and, as people have said, the magic really isn't that important - pretty soon people stopped using it as it didn't add as much to the game and the points were better spent on other things.  As this was in the days before the V2 rule book we house ruled out the niggles like the never ending cavalry charge and something else I've forgotten.

My 54 dice, make or break, cavalry charge straight into the centre of an undead line has gone down in ledgend as one of the biggest dice rolls we have ever seen.  It was all my knights, the general and a hero into a biiiig pile of mixed skellington infantry behind a wall.  Only just came through that but it won me the day.

Warmaster is a brilliant game, it rewards tactical flexibility and good generalship. Balanced armies are key, although Chaos Knights in V1 were somewhat powerful, I am a firm believer that there is no codex escalation and that the armies play fair with each other.

I haven't played Warmaster ancients yet, but quite fancy a game sometime, maybe we could play each other CS? Put the report onto EPIComms, may the best webmaster win! :D.

Ha. I accept your challenge and slap you round the face with a velvet glove in true foppish fashion. We will settle this on the field of battle... except that I dont have an army, and only have the core Warmaster rules!

You are both a scoundrel and a cad! I look forward to our impending deathmatch.

PS: Proxy counters can be downloaded from the Warmaster yahoo group.
