In RealLife? I'm a labor negotiator and corporate trainer.  I have a BS in information systems and a master's in labor and industrial relations.  I'm generally pretty good at telling people how to go to hell in a way that makes them excited to take the trip.

I think my real strength in the hobby is writing backstory.  I love it.  I've submitted fiction to Analog and Asimov's before;  nothing published yet, but I'm still hopeful.  I also use my computer skills to write a lot of Excel programs to automate number-crunching in a number of games.

This is going to sound like I'm copying from Magnus (and I'm not even going to mention that I used to program in REXX), but I assure you it's all true. ?I'm a software designer and developer, primarily in C and C++; I've dabbled in Oracle database design, Solaris system adminstration and most recently I've helped to develop high end digital media servers on Linux. ?I've never coded Java professionally, but that's because my previous employer suffered rectal cranial inversion, and a major stockholder of my current employer has some serious issues with Java (I think they're personal, but I may be wrong); instead, I contributed fairly substantially to MegaMek, a networked implementation of the Classic BattleTech rules in Java. ?My specialty has always been integrating systems that seem to hate talking to each other.

I've worked in construction, have a degree in physics, did extensive research using sonar to detect and identify the seabed composition, have programmed extensively in a plethora of languages for fun and profit.

My last employer was Quester Tangent where said research and programming for profit was conducted. I've also contributed heavily to FTJava. Now I'm a stay at home dad to my three young daughters while my wife earns the big bucks.

In the next couple of years I plan on getting a postgrad in either ocean acoustics or some software related field. Or maybe autonomous vehicles. Or maybe all three.

Database professional doing too much management as opposed to development... I tend to work more on the datawarehouse side of things too.

My main interests outside work is music, I play drums and bass guitar, I used to set-up stages and work in recording studios. Next I want to learn how to play piano/keyboards. I try to stay away from all the software synths/sequencers/ and recording tools so I can concentrate on playing.

I`m also pretty obsessed with graphic design, I can buy boardgames, magazines, books just because the illustrations and layout are superb. If I didn`t control myself
I would own every single Osprey book, Avalon Hill boardgame and others.... for example, I must be the only guy who keeps PC game`s original package  for it`s graphic design.

Wow !  What a Crew so far !!!  Keep'm coming Boyz !!! And thanks Vermis, even though I speak Klingon, and have a working knowledge of German and Korean, I still get English words confused ! :D

Im a PhD student studying the use of radar remote sensing for offshore wind resource assessment at the University of Edinburgh. Basically my phd is a load of old wind!  :p But i do get to spend all day looking at pretty satellite images of the sea  :)

Common mistake.  But I have to say I'd love to be able to point out common mistakes in more than one language. :;):

Like I mentioned, I have a degree in zoology, and perhaps unsurprisingly I'm currently unemployed.
I have amateur 'hobby' interests in entomology :;):, arachnology, and herpetology.  I have a modest collection of tarantulas and scorpions.  And a snake.  And giant tropical cockroaches.
I also like dinosaurs and other prehistoric life.  Have done since before I can remember.

I can draw a bit, paint a bit and sculpt a bit.  I enjoy cooking, especially eastern dishes (Chinese, Thai, and esp. Indian).  That's about it.
