Well after 3 years, I got all four volumes of the Horus Heresy: Visions of War, Darkness, Treachery, and Death.

There was a nice timeline from the Age of Terra (our era) up to the Horus Heresy.  Artwork was mostly from the HH: CCG game from sabertooth, John Blanche's concept sketchs, and some pics from the original HH in the Visions of war and Death.  I like most of the drawing (Adrian Smith's Emperor vs Horus or James Wood's Hands of the Emperor rocks!) but there was things like John Blanche's Emperor sketch (he look like a woman) which wasn't to my liking.  There had many of the primarchs drawn which was great except for a few like the night haunter, corax, and vulkan.

(spoilers below)

The story actually went as far back to the Age of Strife, creation of Primarchs/space marine and the Great Crusade with hints of the dark age of technology but it was mostly generalized as with the rest of the fluff with few exceptions (focus on Lorgar, Magnus, the battle between SW with AC against TS, battle between the EMperor and Horus)  There were little or no focus on xeno armies beyond Orks and Eldar.  However, there was a lot of irony in the story (The emperor didn't believe himself as a god while the most of the imperium believe otherwise, the loyalists from the traitor legions during Istvaan becoming the foundation of the grey knights, and Magnus' warning to the Emperor to prove his sorcery was good unlease daemons into the Emperor's vaults.)  A lot of changes major and minor compare to the old fluff would have you like it or hate it.

Overall, it was good but really wasn't worth 30 bucks each. If you get it discounted from Amazon or such for around $20 each or have a great interest in the HH, than go for it.

I got the first Volume when Black Library had a sale on earlier this year - I agree with your comments abou thte art work, it does vary in consistency.  I've not read the narrative that goes with (couldn't be bothered!), to be honest I think I like the idea of the Horus Heresy being lost to the mists of time, rather than fully fleshed out...

Well you know GW, it's in it for the business aspect of more money milking goals.

Never really liked the fluff that much ... But the Heresy overall was a good vehicle for an intro into the 40K Mythos ... and a "Civil War" for the SM1 models in the box ...

Yeah, the idea of HH was great, seeing that it would be boring to have the Emperor and humanity accomplishing forever loving peace.

BTW, in the last book, GW had posted all the cards in the CCG game in thumbprints though some of the cards are in German showing how lacking the story it is. Plus, not a very good book for xeno lovers though some mentions of orks and   showing of what the eldar webway is.

I just never bought any of the books ... Like I said the fluff is "marginal", but you don't need, a Clancey-esque (sp.?) story line for a good war(game) !  :D

Well I would consider if it wasn't for the fluff, 40k wouldn't do so well beyond the minis style

True ... and some of the minis don't appeal to me at all ...  If I was going to go for a bigger scale, other than 6mm, I wouldn't buy G/W ...

Mutated Genetic Code, the Imperial Mad Scientists had chicken for lunch that day in the Mess Hall, "Oi, who mixed up these >%^&*@#? test tubes !", one of the design staff used to work for the Sci-Fi Channel, "Is it the green wire or the red wire ?,  Oi, any one got the ^&*(@#&>?+ manual !"  ... oh yeah ... they made it all up !   Yeah, that's it ... they made it all up !  :D

I don't place alot of importance on GW fluff.  Some is interesting, some isn't.  I can take it or leave it and still play the game.

This one item, however seems utterly ridiculous to me in the context of the 40k world.

The Grey Knights would have to have been created after the Emperor's battle with Horus.  Any Grey Knights would have been assembled by those that assumed control of the Empire.

Those in power were all paranoid, superstitious, zealots.  There is no way they would have taken marines with the same "tainted" geneseed as a bunch of traitors and made them the ultimate weapon against traitors.  Those marines could never have done anything to prove that they would not eventually succumb to the same corruption their brothers did, even if they were loyal at the time.

Just not gonna happen!
