I'm happy to report I've managed to hook two new players on Epic, I've played through the training scenarios from the rulebook with both of them and now they're after a proper game. What do you think is a good size force for a starter game? I was thinking 1,000 - 2,000 as I still have nightmares about my introduction to the game. My friend laid out 5,500 points of Imperial Guard for me and wished me good luck!
I can pretty much lend them any race though one has already shelled out for a pretty nice ork army, I was thinking space marine v orks is probably a good introduction. What do you think?

I would definitely go for something in between 2k and 3k as this provides enough troops to give you the feeling of a real battle.
Best armies would be IG vs. Orks. Only use the SM if one player insists but make it clear to him that they are a very unforgiving race to play if you fumble anything.

I agree with Morg, 2-3K and concentrate on the core armies. This removes any confusion that can come from using the more complicated list. 2K is a good start, enough to play with most list options and you can get multiple games in. I would leave out WE and Aircraft until they have the hang of the ground war. I recomend that if they want to see marines in action, it is probably better if you play them and show them how marines work best. Let them play each army a number of times and they will pick one that suits their gaming style.
I think I have a candidate in ?my nephew, he is only 13, but has picked up some LOTR stuff and started painting it. I might see if he is interested in Epic, he was looking over my shoulder on Saturday whilst I was painting. I can furbish him with a good force, and it also makes it easy to buy him birthday and christmas presents.
Cheers CAL

Congrats, Heretic. I'm always glad to here about new recruits.
Limiting the number of points is a good idea, as you mentioned, but the training scenarios are also good if you want them to get a better handle on some of the more complex rules, like Aerospace operations, for example.

It really depends on the players. If they are seasoned wargamers, then I'd probably go with 2000-2500. Less experienced would start with lower numbers.
For relative newbies I think the training scenarios in the rulebook are good and playing several in multiple succession is easily within the scope of one night. In the past I've played a couple of them then jumped into a 1500 point game and that seemed to work well.
Regardless, I'd start any new person with Orks or IG. Fewer special rules to track and relatively straightforward tactics make for a good first game.

Cheers for the replies, I'll definitely leave out aerospace and have limited war engines for the first game. IG is a great idea, I'd forgotten how frustrating SM can be when things go wrong!

For training new people I do the following:
-Both sides Marines. -2000 points. -Both sides get a single Warhound. - Only three objectives on the table (Instead of 6), and the victory condition is simply 'best of three'.
Seems to go quite well.

Yarr! Tis good to see more scurvy dogs board the ship! Better a pirate than a landlubber any day, says I.
