If I could score a copy of 1st edition space marine for a non-"MIB OOP ANTIQUE MUCHO $$$" type price, would it be worth it, as someone who has no real pressing intention of playing it?
I might just get it for the included miniatures, but would you say there was any cool factor in owning a copy regardless? I own a copy of 2nd edition space marine, is 1st edition different enough to purchase (fluffwise/ruleswise/etc), in your estimation?
-Periodic, knowing this is might be a moot question for some of you with your gazillion point armies and stacks of unused plastic sprues

I started with SM1, it's a classic, the rule book, buildings and of course the models (Mk.6s, Rhinos, Land Raiders) are worth it ! It is very different than SM2 both rules and fluff, it takes place during the Heresy. If it isn't too costly, I say go for it !

A word of warning about the minis, you dont get the variety of the later editions. There are a load of Marines, but they are all the same type - Marine with bolter. The same goes for the other race (Eldar or Orks?).
One of the best bits of the game is the buildings, you get a load of printed card ones which look quite good. It also comes with a load of counters, blast markers (which I think you can still use in EpicA) and other bits. Not a bad game, but if you want to actually play it you will need at least an entire day.

Yes, as I said, you just get Mk.6s - period. ?Orks and Eldar were not included, they were sold in separate boxed sets. The buildings are great and you do get a lot of counters, burst templates, etc., many are still useable in SM2, E40K & E-A. ?And to play a 2000-3000 point game: 4-6 hours. Again, I started with SM1/AT1 and we still use some of the rules in our "Hybrid" system. ?I used to play solitaire SM1 skirmishes with 1000-2000 point games, it was a lot of fun and I always won !

I bought the 1st edition just for the fluff and it turned out to be a very good buy. As Cybershadow says there are some neat card buildings and loads of sprues but they are sprues of the same type with no variety.

thats true I forgot about that. The codex really compliments the SM1 box. I would agree with Primarch to try and get both if possible.

I've got 2 sets of SM1, 1 set of AT1, 1 SM2 set (Imperial & Ork), 1 E40K set, plus dozens of others including 3 F/W Epic buildings. So if need be I could go "Downtown" ... and rubble it !!!
