Comparing the NetEpic stats:

Sabre
25cm, 4+sv, +0CAF
Autocannon:  75cm, 1die, 5+ to-hit, -1 TSM (Save modifier?)

Leman Russ
20 cm, 3+sv, +2CAF
Battlecannon:  75 cm, 1die, 5+ to-hit, -2 TSM

That looks more like a battlecannon than what we now call an autocannon (well, it splits the difference.  battlecannon range and RoF, autocannon TSM).  How's the gun compare to a LRuss 'battlecannon', a Chimmerax or Predator's 'autocannon', or a Chimedon 'battlecannon' in SM1 terms?

Sabre is a relic from Rogue Trader when an autocannon actually had some chance against vehicles. It was supposed to be a cheap stop-gap field conversion.

Personally I think it should have a lascannon as the Net Epic stats are identical to it. Not to metion that L4's conversion brings lascannon to mind.  :;):

However that would make the Sabre simply an inferior Razorback.

Which would fit exactly the description of cheap stop-gap solution.

W/D # 120, pgs.45-49 ... That's where I got it !  The text calls it an autocannon. M/J is correct !  I used an old 40K IG las-rifle ... made 6 of them.  took more pics lastnight. So will post those and some terrain on Weds ! BTW ... it could carry no troops, it was simply referred to as Tank Hunter in the text ... And was considered a stop gap measure. :D  We call ours the Sabre Mk. II - she packs a Las-cannon !  :;):

Thanks, but I'll stick to my battlecannon version (the difference between a StuG w/ 10.5cm and a Jagdpanzer or StuG w/7.5cm gun)!  Lascannons belong on Razorbacks and some Predators, anyway.

Considering that a Vindicator has chassis reinforcement to handle the recoil of a Demolisher cannon, it wouldn't be too tough to grab the battlecannon from a wrecked Thunderhawk (or Leman Russ for that matter) and put it in place of the Vindicator's demolisher cannon to build an improvised Tank Destroyer on par with the Destroyer tank hunter of the Imperial Guard.  Better still would be a turbolaser, but one can't have everything.  It doesn't get much cheaper than 'field conversion' from scavenged parts, after all.

(Where did the 'counts as'/Collector's models section go?  I printed one copy, but when I went looking for it just now I couldn't find it online.  Am I going blind?)

Fair enough, and your comments above have as much merit as mine. For some reason I just think lascanon armed tank hunter to be cooler. Don't ask me why.

Turbolaser is a Titan Grade weapon so that would be well over the top as I doubt a Rhino could carry a weapon of that size. Unless you meat the laser destroyer (not Rapier but the one mounted on Destroyer tank hunter) but then it wouldn't be a cheap field conversion. It would be a marine version of IG Destroyer.

Yep, I agree with both of you learned Gents ... :D  And besides, the 40K IG Las-rifle I used looked cool IMO !  :;):

Ah, but Marines have turbolasers OR battlecannons on thunderhawks, so it could be possible to see either one show up on a Sabre.

I won't argue that your conversions look good, L4.  They DO look good (Even better that they're in my favorite Chapter's colors!)

(Speaking of Conversions, an acquaintance from another forum sent me the original 40k conversion instructions for a Sabre and LR Spartan.  The recommended barrel for the Sabre is 9mm in diameter, which is nearly the size of a GW battlecannon!)

Am I losing my mind?  I can't seem to find the "Collector's Models" section on the SG website... where'd it go?

L4,

Photobucket is down right now. Can't post the pictures. Sorry.

Maybe someone can do it in the morning. If not, I will do it Wednesday Evening when I get back.

It's not that marines don't _have_ turbolasers. It's the fact they're _too big_ for a Rhino to carry. A thunderhawk can transport a whole platoon of marines _and_ a Rhino in an emergency (it's strapped underneath the fuselage) so it's just a tad larger than a Rhino.  :)
