I'm at a complete loss with respect to FW models on ebay.  Can anyone explain to me why people will bid up to nearly retail price on them?

Heck, for US residents the shipping from FW is such a bargain that the net ebay price is likely more than you'd pay ordering straight from the company.

I can understand stuff like that on occasion but it seems like virtually every ebay auction that includes FW stuff does the same thing.  Even that latest dump of Tau models only depressed the price slightly.  With ~16 Fire Warrior bags listed at once I would normally expect that to be far more of a hit.

I'm just mystified.

It is Ebay, it doesn't have to make sense!

I've noticed that this happens when the bidder thinks it's for 40k, not epic. Other than that, I'm as puzzled as you are Neal. I always factor the cost of shipping when I bid on something.

I've notced this with Gothic stuff as well. Space Marine Battle Barges often go for 90% of retail. One I was bidding on last week went for ?23 including postage! and yet only ?18 to buy from SG.
I wonder if the fact that it is an auction rather than a straight-forward purchase derails people slightly. There's a sociology paper in there somewhere...

Reaver

Yep, I was totally mystified by it as well.

I was intently watching the big FW Tau auction dump this weekend, in the hope that such a large batch of models would diffuse the price.  As thing crept closer to retail (and in a few cases *over*!), not even including shipping!, I just had to shake my head.  *laugh*

Well, at least the seller recouped most of his costs!  *laugh*

Anyone here willing to admit they won any of those auctions?  *LAUGH*

It's gotta be a competetive thing.  People bid because they want the mini's, then somebody TAKES that opportunity away from them with a higher bid.  Feeling slighted, they bid out of retaliation, justifying that they wanted it in the first place and that a few extra dollars won't matter much, especially since the other auctions they are bidding on haven't gone up much.

But then they DO go up and the person is thinking they don't want to win one overpriced auction and pay the shipping charges on that one piece, so they keep bidding on their other auctions to spread out the shipping charges.

I have fallen prey to these urges in the past.  After looking at my Paypal totals at the end of the month, however, it matured my bidding practices quite a bit.  Now I just bid my top bid and be done with it.

I am always shocked at how much effort and time people will put into trying to understand something that is neither logical or sane.

You are 100% correct, eBay will never make sense.

Why will two auctions for the exact same thing, posted within moments of each other, posted from the same seller, running for the same amount of time close with one at 30 times the opening bid and the other with no bids?

Why do people bid beyond retail on lots of stuff (not just GW)?

Why do people bid on things and then act shocked at the cost of shipment when the auction clearly lists shipment costs?

Why do people bid on empty game boxes?

I could go on, but the bottom line is, "It is ebay" is the answer.

I always wonder the same thing myself.  Im keeping my fingers crossed about the IG glut that has appeared over the weekend, but am not really that optimistic.  IG isone of those other armies that tends to go for way more than Im prepard to pay.  As soon as it appraches 75% of retail, I switch off.  Much rather get new for that price, particularly given the very reasonably FW IG prices.

I noticed a few months ago the insane prices that FW squiggoths and titans were going for, but couldnt bring myself to cash in on it  :(

I get it that freaky stuff happens in auctions.  But this is not freaky.  It's consistent.  That's why I don't understand it.

Some people don't have the means to buy direct from forgeworld, while others will jump at the chance to buy a FW item they want even if the discount is only a pound or two, after all, they were going to buy it anyway!

So basically, high demand for FW items keeps prices in near-parity with direct costs.

... noticed a few months ago the insane prices that FW squiggoths and titans were going for ...

Aye, I reported that chap and eventually he was banned from ebay.

Also, I found out many GW stores are willing to order FW items for you shipping free! However, you got to wait for their next major shipping which takes a month to 3 months.

And that is why you should not try.  :;):

Look, for me, it is like going to a mental ward and asking why everyone is crazy there. It is just a place where crazy people can be found.

Same for ebay. Why are there so many crazy people on ebay? Because it is a place where they can be found. End of story, do nto try and go further, it will send you over the edge my friend.

Doesn't anyone sometimes feel the tension when they are bidding against someone else and sometimes out of emotions like rage over logic that you just keep bidding just to beat that guy(s) more so than actually wanting the item?

Meh, judging people on ebay is kind of hard since one's junk can be another person's treasure.  I remember some guy bought a single rare Yugioh card for about $63,000 plus $15 shipping.  He is truly insane or just really have a lot of money?  Who are we to judge who is crazy or not considering we drop a lot of time and money on little toy soldiers? Perhaps our wallets?
