Got in a heckuva a game of T vs T this evening!  It was only 2000 points, but, dang, it was vicious!

I'll post up the armies now and the report tomorrow as I'm still recovering.  *laugh*

Setup

4x4 table
Tau chose edge deployment.

Swarms

Attack Group 1 - 6 Carnifex

Attack Group 2 - 2 Carnifex, 2 Zoanthropes, 2 Raveners, 2 Gargoyles

Assault Group 1 - 4 Zoanthropes, 4 Biovores, 1 Ravener

Assault Group 2 - 9 Raveners, 6 Termagaunts, 2 Gargoyles

Garrisons and Deployment

Tau had no reserves.

Tyranids kept both Infiltration Groups in reserve.

Tau garrsisoned the Tetra contingent near the Tau Blitz

Tyranids garrisoned Attack Group 1 and Assault Group 1, with Assault 1 on overwatch.

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Tau

The Tetra pilots request confirmation from the Shas'O about the massive co-ordinated fire order he has given and then jet into action, directing the fire of AMHC 2 and the Scorpionfish against Assault Swarm 1. ?The Tetras double, staying low, and make a risky move into the ruins to protect themselves from the overwatch fire of Assault Swarm 1. ?One Piranha crashes on the way in and a Tetra is struck down by a Warp Blast, but the entire enemy swarm is now illuminated by markerlights. ?AMHC doubles forward and hammers the Tyranids, taking out 4 Biovores, 3 Zoanthropes, and 1 Tyranid Warrior. ?The Scorpionfish performs the coup de grace by sustaining fire with Tracer Missiles that eliminate the two remaining Tyranid Warriors. ?All that is left of the swarm is a Ravener and a Zoanthrope?

The Shas'O then performs a co-ordinated fire attack with AMHC 1 against Attack Swarm 1. ?The Crisis teams eliminate 2 Carnifex as they double towards them and the AMHC advances and kills two more Carnifex.

Bellowing in rage, the Hierophant doubles over the hill to blast AMHC 2. ?Three Hammerheads are taken out and the remaining grav-tanks rout and flee back into Tau territory.

Not willing to risk the Broadside's overwatch, the Tyrant of Attack Swarm 1 sustains fire on the Crisis Cadre, placing a single Blast Marker.

The Broadsides drop their overwatch and sustain fire on Attack Swarm 1. ?As the smoke clears, is is revealed that no damage has been done!

Attack Swarm 2 marches up the hill to get the remnants of Attack Swarm 1 within Synapse range.

Assault Swarm 2 also marches, flanking slightly to the right as they too crest the hill?

End of Turn: The Tetras fail to shake off any Blast markers, but all the other Tau formations rally.

The battered Tyrant of Attack 1 fails to find any new friends, while Tyrant 2 uses a Mycetic Spore to spawn 2 Biovores (and takes over control of Ravener and Zoanthrope of Tyrant 1 at the beginning of next turn), and Assault Swarm 2 uses a Mycetic Spore to gain a Biovore and a Ravener.

Turn 2

Infiltration Group 1 sprouts near the Tyranid Blitz.


Strategy roll: Tau

The Scorpionfish sustains fire with Tracer Missiles on the marked Hierophant, doing 2DC damage plus a critical hit that does another 1DC damage! ?*ouch*

The Shas'O then performs another co-ordinated fire attack with AMHC 1, this time against Attack Swarm 2. ?The Crisis Cadre advances to bring all their weapons to bear and take out 2 Zoanthropes, 1 Biovore, and 1 Gargoyle. ?AMHC 1 also advances to bring all their weapons in range and kill 2 Raveners, 1 Gargoyle, 1 Biovore and? of course, the Hive Tyrant! ?*OUCH!*


The Hierophant senses an opportunity and advances laterally towards AMHC 1 and the nearby Crisis teams, catching both formations in a blast of bio-plasma!

One Hammerhead is destroyed and 1 Crisis Team is also eliminated by the scathing attack.

Assault Swarm 2 then rushes forward to engage the Tetra Contingent, purposefully moving some of its brood creatures into the support range of the Crisis Cadre and AMHC 1.
The Tyranids lose 1 Ravener and 2 Termagaunts, but wipe out the light Tau skimmers, incidentally breaking the Crisis Cadre and placing another Blast marker on AMHC 1!

The Broadsides again sustain fire on Attack Swarm 1, eliminating both Carnifex, but leaving the Hive Tyrant to howl in frustration.

The confused surviving Brood creatures of Attack Swarm 2 rush forward to engage AMHC 1, with the support of the Hierophant and Assault Swarm 2. ?

The Tau grav-tanks gun down 1 Carnifex and 1 Zoanthrope, but it is not enough, and they are all blasted from the sky by spores and acid.

AMHC 2 doubles deep into Tyranid lines and blasts apart the burbling Lesser Synapse Node that was just minding its own business.

All alone, Hive Tyrant 1 goes onto overwatch in the hope of finding some shooty friends?

End of Turn: All surviving Tau formations successfully rally.

The Hierophant regenerates 1DC of damage. ?Assault Swarm 2 uses a Mycetic Spore to spawn 3 Raveners and 1 Termagaunt, while the cagey Tyrant of Attack Swarm 1 uses a Spore to gain 3 Biovores!

Turn 3

Infiltration Group 2 shows up in the woods near Tau Objective 2.

Strategy roll: Tau

AMHC 2 performs an odd, shuffling advance that allows it to both claim the Tyranid Blitz *and* narrowly markerlight Lesser Node 2 while they pop-up to fire on the partially concealed Hierophant doing 1DC damage and a critical hit that does *another* 1DC damage! (Those Fire Warrior tankers got a 3-for-1 deal there!)


Now that it has a marked target, the Scorpionfish sustains fire with Tracer Missiles on Lesser Node 2, destroying it.

The Hierophant doubles back to the Tyranid Blitz, blasting AMHC 2 and taking out the one Hammerhead that was claiming the Blitz.

Assault Swarm 2 lives up to its name by launching a daring, long-range engage? against the Scorpionfish, who thought it was safe behind the hill! ?

The battle lasts for two turns, allowing the Tyranids to creep closer and closer! ?The Scorpionfish guns down a single Ravener before eventually exploding, taking out another Ravener and a Gargoyle. ?A single Ravener goes to ground, outside of Synapse range as the Tyranids relentlessly move on the Tau Blitz.

The Shas'O detects a crisis forming and doubles towards Assault Swarm 2, blasting apart 2 Termagaunts and 1 Tyranid Warrior.

The Broadsides again sustain fire on Attack Swarm 1, killing 2 Biovores.

Tyrant 1 drops overwatch and doubles to get up close and personal with the Broadsides, placing a single Blast marker on them?

End of Turn: All Tau formations successfully rally.

The Hierophant regenerates 2DC of damage, bringing it to 4DC. ?Assault Swarm 2 spawns a Ravener and Attack Swarm 1 spawns a Carnifex?

Strategy roll: Tyranids!

Tyrant 1 finally gets to do something as it and its very small brood engage the Broadsides. ?Two Broadsides are torn apart and two more destroyed as they try to flee. ?The Tyranids gleefully chow down as they claim Tau Objective 1.

Inspired by the Tyrant's success, Assault Swarm 2 prepares to engage the Crisis Cadre? and falters! ?(I actually managed *not* to curse when a "2" came up on the Initiative roll? *sigh*) ?Momentarily confused and cut off from the Hive Mind, the Tyranid Warriors go into nesting mode and form an odd, ragged semi-circle around the Tau Blitz.


AMHC 2 advances to mark the Hierophant and contest the Tyranid Blitz. ?A single Seeker Missile gets through? does 1DC damage, scores a critical hit? and kills the massive Tyranid beast! ?(*sigh* That's how Bio-Titans almost always seem to die? but this was, I believe, the first time I've had one survive to Turn 4!) ?The Tau easily secure the Tyranid Blitz.

The Shas'O is unsure what to do as he seems to be caught between a rock and a hard place. ?Try as he might, his sensors show that he's got no way to contest his own Blitz and that there's no guarantee that firing on Assault Swarm 2 will clear the Tyranids from it. (My opponent spent a good five minutes trying to measure a way to contest the Tau Blitz, but even a march move around the spread out swarm fell short? and he wasn't confident he could shoot his way to the Warrior holding the Blitz.) He makes his decision and advances on the Tyrant of Attack Swarm 1, contesting Tau Objective 1? and then blasting away the Tyranids trying to hold it!

End of Turn: The Broadsides fail to rally.

Assault Swarm 2 spawns 2 Raveners and 2 Gargoyles.

Tau 2 (Blitz, BTS) vs Tyranids 2 (Blitz, BTS)

Tiebreaker: Tau 1448 vs Tyranids 1425 - I think that's a tie, folks!

Wow, what a close battle!

What's the opinion on the broadsides change?

Also, I didn't see any changes to Guided Missile range posted.  Were you using the 75cm range or the proposed 90cm range?

I really like the Broadside changes and I'm glad to take the Contingent at 250 points.  They are great for area denial when on overwatch and still are great shooters on doubles.

We were using the 75cm range which has always seemed fine to us.  With a 30cm move on most Guided Missile platforms, most of the board can be hit with decent placement.

I've attached a picture of the pre-paint Tyranid Objectives I made.

The "digestion pool" Objective was created by sticking an odd-shaped piece of thin plasticard to a 40mm round base to give a flat surface.  Green-stuff was used to make a "fleshy" retaining ring and then an Adrenal Gland bit from the Tyranids bio-morphs sprue was used to spruce it up a bit.  Green-stuff tentacles were added to complete the Objective.

The pool was painted black and, while still wet, dark green was swirled into the black to give a "liquid" look.

Excellent ! The other two pieces comes from W40K models (maybe Maccrage ??) ? Correct ?

The one on the left is a Macgragge infestation marker with some plastic scything talons attached.

The one in the center is a Devourer bio-weapon with some Genestealer carapace extensions fitted.

I think I'm right. :)
