Hey Guys will this would be a interesting study in the evolution of a painter.

I started painitng my Federated Suns mechs way back in 2001.  I have recently started painting them again to complete my "All armies must me panited by 40" pledge.

What is real intesteing is seeing how defferent the Mechs have come out depending on what stage of painting I was at and ho much I have learned.

I would also like you guys to help me choose which style I shoould continue with.

This first attached pic shows some of the first Mechs I painted back in 2001.  Their not bad, but nothing jumps out on you.  Their a prime black with a couple layers of drybrush.  They came out a little chakly

Ok I got back into painting these in 2003. ?Because I was frustrated with my primer wearing off when I handled the mech I did a weird experiment. ?I hit the mini with a mat finish after I primed it before the first drybrush. ?

This had a weird effect and made the mechs ultra dark green; a near black. ?Which for the unit I thought was real cool.

Here are some of the 2nd generation.

By looking at the mini in the back you can see the difference.

Ok So here we are in 2006.  Louie started painting his mechs again to discover that is brain just didn't work as it once did.

I have learned a lot in the last few years to inlcude watering down my paints, creating a sold base coat, washing, and highlighting.

It's to the point where I don't do heavy drybrush any more.

When I was painting I discovered that the new Mechs were not acheiving the ultra dark scheme of old, in fact it took me a few hours, to remember how I had even accomplished that scheme.

They were more like the originals in tone but of higher quality, IMHO.

I got stressed because now my unit would have 3 style of painting in it.  I keep darking the base coat and sometimes the highlighting to try to bring it back in line to the 2nd generation mechs.

After a while I realized that would be impossible to recreate the ultra dark from this pint and I just focused on using my current techniques.

I concluded I would let them come out as they were and I would decide what to do, with your help, on th enext batch.

They have less highlights them I would apply now, but thta was becuse I was so centered on the basecoat.

So here is the third generation...

And lastly a nice close of of the cockpit also a new technique I have picked up on.

I will be returning to the older mechs to add decals and blue cockpits, but I haven't had a chance yet.

So there you have it.

My question is do you like the 3rd Generation mechs and I continue which my current style?

Or

Try to acheive the ultra dark green/black technique again?  (Which I'm not sure I can do)

As always commnets and feedback are welcome.

Either way I hope you enjoy the pictures.  More will come.

Hi CC,
that's a grand plan, then - games and Napoleonics after 40 sounds fine. Mmmm - one year to go for me!  :p
I wouldn't restart the oldies - adding the cockpits and decals is ok, but not much else - the hours I've spent repainting old armies when I could've been doing new ones...
The last ones are an improvement, but the older guys look quite ok too, and I don't think the tone matters that much. You could just say that the lighter ones have been out in the sun more. I'd bet that except in Patton's army, you'd see colour variations after a few months of war.
Oh - and very nice force, by the way - group pic of all?

Looks good C/C ! ?I'll have to hope all my stuff is painted by 60, since I'll be 50 in Dec. and have lots to paint and buying more ! ?:D  I'm a big fan of lots of detail and decals.  I'm even going back to add decals on stuff I did years back.  And "V" is basically correct, colors will vary somewhat after long campaigning replacement equipment, etc.  But as I said, your stuff looks good !

Nice looking mechs, CC. The 3rd generation is the best and I would continue with that style. Also, I'm with V, I wouldn't spend too much time repainting old minis. Like him, I'd rather paint something new, than spending time "fixing" old paint jobs.

I would also go for the third generation, nicely highlighted and not so dark gets my vote.
