Hey Folks, I'm brand new to Epicomms, so forgive me if this question has been answered elsewhere. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between the various edition's chaos space marine models. I see a lot of the older Chaos boxes for sale on e-bay, do the older figs mesh well with the newer ones? Would I be able to mix in basic marines from the Epic 40K box next to them, or would they look out of place?
I have the same question relating to the Imperial Guard...size and model-wise, do the older IG models mesh well with the newer ones? Thanks in advance for helping me out!

I'm just basing up my CSMs atm and the short answer is no, not really. The CSMs off the old sprue came in 4 varieties, nominally one for each of the powers, and a missile launcher armed marine. You can pretty effectively add either version of standard marine to these guys for variety and/or padding too.
The CSMs off the E40K sprue come in basic marine, and heavy bolter armed Havoc, as well as a banner bearer, sorceror, champion, Noise Marine and Berserker. The two basic marine poses are very noticeably "fatter" and IMO look badly out of place next to the old guys. I ended up using these as Plague marines and dedicated Havoc stands. The banner bearer and sorcerer are better and work ok with the old figures. The Noise Marines and Berserkers are based stand alone so their size wasn't really an issue. I guess you could use a detachment or two of the new marines mixed with the old guys as "Enormously Fat" proxies
The IG stuff is better. The old Codex Grey troops work really well with the Catachan infantry off the E40K sprue and size wise arent too bad with the Tallarn guys off the E40K/Armageddon version, but there is the completely different uniform/weapon thing.

Welcome to the forum, jmw!
Personally I find that the Chaos Space Marines from SM2 and E40k work just fine together. I don't remember if there was any scale creep for them when comparing the two editions. The main difference from what I remember was that E40k had specific Chaos Marines for each Chaos faction.
I can't comment on the current IG troopers, since I haven't bought any yet.

There was a bit of scale creep, as noted. They do look a bit larger, but it's akin to the difference between SM1 and SM2 marines or orks in my opinion - not ideal but unless you look closely you're not likely to notice. Still, I prefer not to mix them.
As far as the SM/TL era chaos, yes, there were 4 different CSM models that were nominally for the 4 different powers but everyone I know and virtually every assembled model I've seen mixes them freely.
On mixed stands I have also used plain old marines to stretch the models. In a mixed stand they look just fine.
The E40K era IG and the EA models are essentially the same model. Only the sprues were rearranged. Mix them freely. SM/TL era IG is generally referred to as "codex grey" and have a completely different uniform and weapon load than the newer ones. I wouldn't mix them in at all.

Thanks so much for all the replies, I got the answers I needed! ?The feeling I'm getting is that it would look fine to mix and match the older Chaos marines with one another, but I should probably keep the new ones seperate (except the champion, banner bearer, and psyker). ?I'll skip the old IG entirely, since newer IG models are fairly easy to get. ?Thanks all!
