Quote (ragnarok @ 29 May 2006 (21:00)) | Very nice Battle rep. ?How balanced do you think the Deathwatch list is?
Do any of the points need tweaking? ?Are the veterans too powerful? (I see they were all stuck topgether) | Well, Flogus could answer better than me, but we both agreed that the Deathwatch marines seemed a bit too expensive, especially the Terminators (he only took one, but looking at the army list is seems they are paying their "Sniper" ability quite a lot of points).
Flogus stuck all his marines together so that they would be in mutual support of each other (he of course knew the Necron assault was coming). He also knew that my Deceiver (only source of BPs) was way too far to be a concern for troops in a tight formation. I usually do that too (stuck my troops together in assaut) when I know there are no barrages around.
As far a balance goes, the list seems OK, although to be honest there are so many options it's hard to judge from just one game.

Great BatRep... and good to see the forces of the Inquisition out there to save the day and callously sacrifice the imperial guard... well, sacrifice the guard, anyway.
Interesting battle, certainly, and damn do those necrons get into assault quickly!
While I'm all for sacrificing the imperial guard, do you not feel that they were perhaps a little too pointlessly squandered? They didn't do all that much to the Necrons, alone. Perhaps a battleship and a drop fortress would be a better use of points?
I'm surprised you found the Deathwatch too expensive... I've actually already dropped their points once. Your opponent did spend rather a lot of points on veterans and other upgrades - for the points spent on DW upgrades, he could have bought another kill team! But, again, interesting that you say so, especially since they were deployed in supporting formation.
But nice to have some feedback, please, please do let us know if you are using the ITF again and how it fares.

They certainly do, don't they? ?

The IG's sacrifice was probably a bit pointless, but:
- Flogus was using the list for the first time and I think the shiny teleporting Marines were just too tempting not to take (I know I would have been tempted ? );
- There are so many options in this list it's hard to make a choice;
- This sacrifice had one merit, though: getting 2/3 of my army stuck on one end of the battlefield (even though retrospectively I should have seen it coming and should have committed less troops).
I'm surprised you found the Deathwatch too expensive... I've actually already dropped their points once. Your opponent did spend rather a lot of points on veterans and other upgrades - for the points spent on DW upgrades, he could have bought another kill team! |
Well, now that I've had a better look at the list, perhaps the points spent on the veterans would have been better employed elsewhere.
That said, the Deathwatch Terminators are horribly expansive! Isn't 450 points for 4 Terminators (500 points with the compulsory character) a bit too much, considering the only difference with regular Termies is their
Sniper FF attack? Is that really worth more than 25 points per stand? Also, is the Veteran upgrade and its CC MW attack really worth 25 points per stand?
On the whole (and keep in mind I have just played once
againstthis list) I think the basic formations' costs are OK, it's just that the upgrades are very expensive.

Actually, you can only have one Terminator unit per DWKT (because you can only take each upgrade once). However, looking at it, it doesn't actually say that anywhere. I think I'm going to need to write a new section detailing formation selection, so good point! And yes, the whole formation then cannot use Transports, with the exception of Drop Pods (the note about Terminators being able to use Drop Pods is because they are not normally allowed to use them, IIRC, but I can see how it is confusing.)
DWKT Terminators are about 30 points each over regular marine ones, and I can see that is somewhat unattractive. However, note that compared with basic DWKT they also give the bonus of Veterans (i.e. an extra MW attack), so they're not such a bad deal in comparison. I don't want to make them a no-brainer choice, especially with regard to veteran units. I think the veteran upgrade is priced about right (possibly 5 points too much), but I could drop Terminators a bit - 40 points, perhaps - if people still find them too expensive to consider taking.
However, with the number of options being one of the strengths of the list, I'm happy with the upgrades erring on the side of being expensive.

And on the Strike Cruiser question...
Er...
For the sake of completeness?
Actually, I've been toying with the idea of adding Thunderhawk Transporter formations to the army, and so that would do the trick... Definately need to make an update soon...
