At least he was talking about Epic!

My LGS doesn't stock it but they do stock BFG.  I ordered some Epic Stuff and they received it within a week and I didn't pay postage.  I have to put up with one of the guys talking smack since he's tired of "GW's Crap" even though he still forks out tons of money on the flagship games.  What I don't get is why people have to have a feeling one way or another.  I play almost every game GW has current lines of (not in the Necromunda or Bloodbowl Leagues).  I think they're all decent.  I also play Warmachine, Void, and occasionally some Clix games for S&G.  They're games, they have rules and models and people that play them, that is all that I require.

This is treading into that odd area of the Human experience I call ?subjective associations?. I see most people like to pick a favorite, sometimes for reasons even they do not fully understand. And they make that favorite a major part of their time in that activity. Sports Teams, Games, stock choices, movies, or foods are all examples.

People like you who accept that any game can be fun when played with friends are a good find indeed.  :;):

Why thank you.  While this is off topic, I believe that life has too much to offer to be subjective.  It's not that it is too short, most people simply don't use enough of it.

Anyway, I think GW could use a bit of a re-vitalizing.  They are making great efforts to bring proffit...I mean interest back into a viable region.  However I think they are missing the thing that made it what it is.  John Blanche is a horrible artist but I love his work.  Why?  Because of the flavor.  His epic battles and mysterious illustrations really make you wonder what this whole thing is about.  But then you get someone like Mark Gibbons who is an exceptional artist and focuses on the individual designs to the point of ignoring the overall feeling you end up with a game that has lost a portion of it's identity.  Combine with that the lack of specialist support and the phasing out of things like Orky Fort and Imperial outpost because they don't "go" with anything.
The specialist games are just as important to retaining the original feeling of the game as any piece of art or rules...

 A widespread rule... I've had it done to me in at least 3 stores in the UK and in one in France...

In case anyone doesn't know, it genuinely IS games workshop's number 1 rule for staff (the first of the "ten commandments" no less... :/ ).

Of course, there are upsides to pestering every poor sod who comes in the door - since the 10 commandments comes first, it means you can get out of doing any real work...

I've just about trained the local GW store staff to leave me alone, mainly by saying I'm buying stuff for Epic and Bloodbowl conversions; I haven't played 40k since Rogue Trader;  No, I'm not interested in vets night, I play with friends;  No, I don't need glue or paint;  No, I'm not interested in the latest XYZ;  No, I don't need a bag;  Here's my money, can I take my pruchases and go now please?

Me, I faint interest just enough so the dork follows me around the store talking. This keeps me on edge just enough to not get sucked into their marketing ploys. Sort of like pain avoidance therapy. :p

Get my glue and leave.

I used to enjoy the days of SM2 when they would bounce over as you looked at the epic blisters and gleefully ask how many points you could muster.

They used to just go away once I'd answered 20,000+

You guys certainly seem to have a great deal of contempt for the average GW staffer. As an ex-staffer myself this seems a little unfair: while I've had plenty of experiences of over-enthusiastic and under-informed staffers jumping me, and I've had the "How many points?" question plenty too ("How many points of Chaos for 40K? Well, at least 10,000 but that doesn't include the titans...") there are plenty of decent guys (and - very occasionally - girls) working for GW in retail...

Is it contempt or pity? ????

Contempt, I reserve this for those who chose to be mean spirited, rude, or otherwise select to act the way they do.

Pity, I give to those who have been asked to do something that is annoying to me, but is not mean spirited or rude.

It has been my experience that the average GW employee here in Los Angeles is very young. It is most often their first job. They have been told what to say and what to think. They seldom have been given enough training to adjust their routine to the level of customer. Thus they often seem ?Over Eager? and in many cases seem unable to deal with someone who is not also ?Fan-Boy? eager for the latest slop out that month.

Contempt, no. Given experience, something only time will give, and some additional training many of them will make fine employees for other companies down the line.

Pity, yes. They have been put on a path designed to be overly simplistic and mindless. Not something designed to instill anything other then a level of ?Fan-Boy Robotishness?.

If this doth offend, sorry. It has been my experience. Others may disagree as they wish.

Lord I, most of the GW staff around here is great.  There are a few goobs but that happens everywhere.  Once they learn your preferences, they are usually happy to lay off the sales pitch.

I know for a fact that not all GW store employees are annoying, especially since my nephew is one of them.  :p However, he mainly works there for the employee discount, since that is the only way he could possibly afford the tons of minis he has. Also, he's old enough (25) to know that being overeager can be annoying to the veteran players.

Oh, no offence taken, just wondering if that really is indicative of all your experiences.

Whatever GW's other policies, its ground-level staff are still recruited on the basis of being frothing hobby fanatics who are often only working for a fun (well, for retail) job and the employee discount.

And yes, Dwarf Supreme, that's the reason I worked at GW instead of somewhere which paid real money! I remember ringing up mail order for a few chaos space marines for my Emperor's Children and buying 80 after learning they were 40p a sprue... Of course I haven't put them all together yet...

Yes, had there been a GW store back when I was young I would have most likely tried to work there for the discount too.  :;):

As to if it was indicative of my experiences, sad to say it was. Now to be fair, I have only been to stores here in Southern California and thus do not know if it might reflect issues with the regional management and not the complete chain. But that is another discussion.

In my case, I only get to see stores when I'm abroad, so I'm always a 'new customer' unless I happen to go to the same place twice, usually spanned by a few years' time - the GW types would have to have a fantastic memory to remember a client who appeared once and then only reappeared a few years later !
So - yes, I have always gotten that treatment, except once when a store in Paris was so full they could not afford time for me (and I also avoided their attention by hiding behind a pack of kids). As I like to look around a shop quietly for a few minutes I don't like this approach (I particularly hate it in book shops, which are practically sacred to me). But it's not the end of the world, and I'd have liked to experience being a regular customer. After the initial salvo, they always backed off, looked worried when I approached the cash register with bits from at least 4 different armies (and that is customer care which I appreciated), and then politely listened to my explanations on Malta, my diversity of armies, the local gaming scene etc.
So: I do not like the initial approach - in ANY sort of shop - but otherwise most of the store types were quite polite and ok. :D
