Quote (dafrca @ 26 May 2006 (19:02)) | Quote (nealhunt @ 26 May 2006 (06:59)) | Widespread or consistent discounts result in the discounted price being considered the "real" price in people's minds and the regular price becomes "overpriced" sooner or later. ? |
I agree with Neal, it is a real issue for some markets.
My favorite one is Diamonds. The price is kept high solely by artificial means. Their ?real? value is far less then the perception in the market place. But because their rarity is kept high by market manipulation, and thus the perception is they have a value, people pay for mark ups of 250% or more on a ring.
Same goes for cars as Neal has said.
dafrca | Lately, I think the same principle is being applied to gasoline.

Quote (Heresiarch @ 26 May 2006 (16:06)) | Theres no difference between epic and 40k in terms of discounts on eBay and the volume of 40k figs for sale is at least a full order of magnitude greater.
By your logic they wouldn't want to support 40k either. | How many kids can buy FB/40k models?
You know kids are the ones buying new models mostly anyway...Experienced ones buy them 2nd handed...
Epic however doesn't appeal to kids so new epic stuff isn't bought.
Maybe if horde of <15 people without credit card would flock to epic it could sell but I doubt that.

Quote (Bombot @ 26 May 2006 (16:54)) | I think the fanboy has a point. The strength of the second hand market shows that there is at least a market for Epic. If there are sales on eBay, it?s a good sign that GW is making sales itself. | Yeah. They had sales in SM/SM2 and epic40k era. Nowadays only few who start game and some loyal fans buy stuff from GW but not nearly enough to make it really appealing for GW to produce models. If they can't make big profits on epic why bother...Good sales some 10+ years ago doesn't really help now...

OK, let's not confuse the used market with the on line discounters. What I sell my collection for on ebay does not impact the profit those figures made either way the first time they were sold. |
But used market was what I was talking all the time...And used market affects GW's profits big time. They can't equal prices of used models(because people buy used stuff for cheaper. Why pay same for used if you can get new mint models for same price...Ergo used stuff price is ALWAYS lower) and used markets are flooded with epic models.
GW doesn't have real motives to make new moulds or cast models when same stuff is floating on used markets to fill needs of all epic players...No profits for GW.
GW makes profit for any "new" figure sold, regardless of who sells it, because they sold it first. |
Doesn't help when that used models are models bought 10-15 years ago in SM era...
Why cast new models now when people will simply buy used models that GW sold some dozen year ago...GW already has got it's profits. Why would GW produce new models NOW when people will simply buy 10-15 year old models from ebay?
Only way GW could beat ebay would be to produce completely new models and sell only them. So don't sell marine plastics(since hordes of marines are there on ebay). Sell only new models which have been sculpted from scratch and whose like are not on ebay.
Of course this requires models to be good enough majority(lot more than 50% of epic players) will want to replace old versions with new ones and b) this would make GW line bit odd...Want basic infantry? Go to ebay...That would be GW's new official line...Unless they would want to redo WHOLE range(and how precicely you make 6mm marines new and good looking enough that most marine players would be buying bucketload of new look marines?)...Which is big financial risk in itself...

Quote (Bombot @ 26 May 2006 (21:56)) | Quote (primarch @ 27 May 2006 (01:20)) | For good or ill, GW killed the epic market nearly ten years ago. Its never coming back. |
I think that's exaggeration. ?Epic is not dead - there are still players out there and if you find them then you don't need to keep buying stuff to play the game.
Certain CCGs are dead games because you need a continuous supply of new cards to play the game properly.
Epic is just unlikely to ever be big again, but it's still a lot bigger than many games will ever be.
Let's keep things in perspective.
Anyway, being low on GW's radar means that at least they're unlikely to dumb the rules down continuously like they do for some products. | Hi!
This is NOT an exageration.
If you were playing back then, remember the support, stock in the stores, monthly releases, new expansions, etc.
What do you have now?
I understand the sentiment that as long as some people enjoy a game its not dead. By that definition, nothing ever really dies.
But I am not talking about that kind of "dead" but of commericial viability. Which, IMO IS quite DEAD.
I've been around epic since it was born, as a retailer, customer, player and fan. I think my perspectives on this are quite clear.

Quote (dafrca @ 26 May 2006 (22:36)) | No matter what is said here, the reality of the situation is GW has done quite a few things to hurt their chances of Epic doing anything but die.
They have failed to treat it with the kind of support that allows a game to grow and expand.
They have clearly said the games they care about are the three core games and that is it.
Anything else is just a side tour.
Any fanboy who can not accept that is in for a rude suprise.
dafrca | Hi!
Hehe, you know something Dafrca? If you go back to the posts archives on the old space marine list and look at what people said regarding epic 40k, you will see the same responses of trying to deny the sky is "falling".
Yet it fell... HARD.
I beleive in ACTION. Not words. GW says a lot, promises a lot, but delivers little or nothing.
If you are new to epic and GW, then, as Dafrca says you are in for a rude awakening.
If you are like me, there are no surprises, since I said this woould be the state of affairs from day one. All the curious need to do is search old posts on this forum.
For us "old hands" the current state of affairs is just a recycle of what happened 9 years ago with epic A. Lots of PROMISES, but NO delivery.
We should probably pin Dafrca's post for newbies to read so their dissapointment wont be that bad....

I think when the EpicA effort started I wanted to believe it was going to be different. I had hope. Then I started to see the same BS signs.
I hoped for the best, but accepted what was.
I put a lot of effort into the EA playtest because of my hope. As I know many of you did as well. So I am not sad or feel any guilt now when I call it as I see it.
I will always love Epic, but she is a cruel mistress. So I have elected to find a new relationship.

PS: Trish, if you see this post, I am talking metaphorically only. I am not looking for a new woman
