Hi!

Some would argue there isn't much difference between marriage and terrorism, Legion4... }:)

In my case, my wife came to the conclusion that my hobbies are good because:

1. They keep me home.
2. She knows what I am doing at all times.
3. It's really not that expensive compared to some other "manly" hobbies (drinking, whoring and all that good stuff).

Smart lady.

Primarch,

I have been married for 11 years. My wife said she has accepted me playing with small metal toys, and for most of the reasons you gave.

I am really lucky. My girlfirend actually likes the hobby as she finds it creative and artistic, and much better than disappearing off to the pub each evening and getting drunk.

She has even had a go at painting a few things herself! And, she has been known to return from shopping and have bought me some GW stuff. :O ?

I have the largest collection of 'cute' 40K that I know. On a good day she can tell apart 40K and Warhammer Fantasy stuff as well.

Hmm...have any of you been married over a decade?

yesterday I celebrated my 3rd wedding anniversary

Jacqui (she hates been referred to as "the wife") has no problems with my gaming (and actively encourages me it has to be said), she even bought me the FW Cathedral for christmas one year. However she does insist I paint everything before I buy anything new...

Currently the main curtailment on my gaming time (actually time in general) is my son - however I see this as an investment as at some point in the future he may be interested in his dad's hobby; shared time painting and gaming - however it is very likely he'll be interested in some weird stuff instead!

CyberShadow,

She sounds like a keeper.

Can she cook as well?

Miracle of MIRACLES!

You must have some serious positive karma, Jimbo.

Hi!

Being a little further down the road on this particular case I can GUARANTEE he'll like to do all sorts of things you dont. My son doesn't show much interest in miniatures games, but at least he likes RPG's. I think the LESS you talk to them about your hobbies the more likely they'll be interested in it. You know kids they like doing the exact opposite of everything.

As for "gamer friendly girls", being the suspicous guy I am, I am wary of women who seem to support your hobby, but secretly try to manipulate you otherwise. Since some are smart enough to know that direct confrontation may not be the answer. If they behave for at least a decade, I'd say your safe....maybe. }:)

Funny thing is I DO NOT want a spouse that is in to gaming. I have always veiwed that a relationship has more to offer due to its differences between the persons than anything in common. I'm with my wife precisely because she is so different from me. Variety is the spice of life.

That, and I could NEVER live with someone like myself anyway. Which scores my wife even more points...... :p

hmm...this topic is getting too "touchy feely", back to more manly stuff....

...pass the beer....

...burp....

...how about those jets?

Actually, yes. She is a fantastic cook as well!

Primarch, I agree. I would hate to be with a girl who liked the same stuff. I need my own time and to be able to get away from stuff, even the stuff that I love.

Words of wisdom. THe most solid relationships I have encounters are presicely those where each spouse has their "own time" and own hobbies.

As for painting, I'm somewhere in between. I don't exactly _like_ to paint, but I don't like to play with unpainted minis either. This means I do paint my armies, but it takes a LONG time. And with epic thingies I really don't bother with highlights and such.

For my 40k army I do highlights, but since I am lazy I chose an army where I only need to do the minimum of shading, eg. the Black Templars.

Something about painting I don't understand is: why it takes so long to achieve a pathetic result. I could understand the amount of time it takes me to paint a single 40k squad if I painted to a standard close to Mr. Tuffskull, but since I cut corners and generelly do a shoddy job I can't.  :o

Hi!

Welcome to my world Mojarn. I have had those thoughts exactly. Thats why I much prefer to contract a qualified painted and get them done "right". There are a lot of them around and don't be afraid of overseas painters either. With the exchange rate you can get real good deals. My current painter is from Poland and he does a good job pretty cheap.

Hmmm...I dont cut corner, I strive for perfection and achieve marginal results...  Damn annoying!

I know it sounds like a fob-off reply, but it honestly is true -

Speed in painting & quality just comes down to practice.
Miniature painting (for most people) is not art. I cannot draw to save my life and will never be an artist, but have learnt to paint minis to a good standard.

All we're doing is some kind of "advanced colouring in". Thus with practice, anyone can get good results (you might not make it to a Haley/Wong/Neilson/Haye level, but you can get very good.)

The best example I can think of is my Eldar  Banshee Exarchs. Ignoring the conversion work, the painting of the first one took me probably around 20 Hours spread over the course of a Month of free time.
The second one, painted over 2 years and over 2000 figures of various scales later, took just one evening.

I spent many years being a terrible painter. The past 3 I've started to focus on it and you can judge the results - Truly, If I can paint to demo level, with all the artistic skill of an arthritic spider, anyone can!  :D

That is one of my favourite statements so far!  :D

Finding the time is the big problem. I am sure that I could churn out passable minis given a couple of months to 'warm up'. But I just dont get that consistant amount of time.  :(
