In and odd way, yes. If you want somthing badly, now is the time.

Of course at those prices, just give it a pass and wait for the inevitable "bargain bin" price that will crop up to dump stock.

A couple of points with regards to your comments.

GHQ actually doesn't have stores.

They are strictly a manufacturer who either use the traditional distribution chain or go direct to retail for larger stores to get their products into the hands of consumers.

Wizard's of the Coast is another example of a manufacturer who tried owning their own stores. They came to the rapid conclusion that the margins were not worth the time to bother with. Especially when you work in the fact you've now totally bitched off everyone else in the area who carries your products.

However the level of detail on GHQ figures is pretty much a full order of magnitude better than GW's. GW's detailing and/or casting frankly isn't all that special anymore... if in fact it ever really was.

Secondly... yes some GHQ will go for cheaper than retail on ebay   as people decide they want new hobbies.

GW's marketing strategies pretty much guarantee that the overall number for their products will always be stupidly higher than GHQ's though. Even if for no other reason than GHQ's target age range for their products is a decade or two older than GW's and therefore have a longer attention span and are probably more "settled" in thier choice of hobbies that they pursue.

With regards to the size of the secondary market for GW figs GW truly has no one to blame but themselves and their business practices.

I don't think your going to see much of that this time around Primarch.

EA wasn't marketed... or pushed if you will... nearly as hard as E40K was so theres probably half the number of retailers stocking it than there was last go round.

And in smaller quantities too.

I always find this kind of thought funny. You do understadn GW does make a profit when they sell their stuff wholesale to a retail outlet. Regardless of if it is a brick and mortor store or an on-line retailer. They make money off of all those sales.

It also means their profit margin on items sold through their own store is larger then most retail stores.

So they do not "loose" money because some on line guys sells their product for 25% off. They sold it to him at 35% or 40% off to begin with and still made money.

If they returned to their role as a manufacturer and quit trying to make it on both ends in double digits, they would not have an issue with on-line.

And for the record, they could compete with the eBay seller, but it would require their willingness to leave greed at the door and that is their real problem.

The main issue, I think, is that GW just doesn't really want to support other chains. They want everyone buying directly from them (for reasons which should be obvious, given their price rate). The trouble is it doesn't work quite so well that way... I gotta agree with Dafrca,  if GW went back to being a largely game producing group instead of a store-front owning group, they'd be much better off. Selling their own miniatures online would be fine. But they sink huge amounts of money into store-fronts all over the world, which probably rarely make back the price of owning them. I would lament the lack of places to go and play if all those shops closed up, but it'd be encouragement for new shops to open in the local areas. And I suspect other folks, who don't have to pay so much overhead, could do that job just as well (There're several miniatures/comics/cards/manga shops in this area I know of which have been alive for 15+ years or more).

I don't think this is fully accurate.  Discounters do reduce the perceived value of the product by the market as a whole.  Downward pressure on retail prices will eventually translate into downward pressure on wholesale prices.

God forfend that they just either stop selling to discounters themselves or threaten bloody death and dismemberment to distributors who do.

I still think it's more because they're a bunch of greedy buggers myself but... maybe thats the way they justify it to themselves... who knows?

GW could I?m sure, if they wanted, price everyone else out of the market with their bulk buying and distribution network (would gamers actually want them to though?).  Instead they figure their products are price inelastic (!) and go for margin per sale.  I think that the competence of the GW strategy looks very different from a US perspective than it does from a UK perspective.

The US is (so I gather) focused around independent stores.  Crazy prices compared to other rmanufacturers leave them at a distinct disadvantage competing for sales in those stores.  In the UK, competition isn?t so bountiful, and their stores are far more useful as independent stores with tables to play on are less numerous.  So their constant price hikes annoy me, but I see how they can get away with it in the UK (dunno about elsewhere in the world).  It?s the US where their strategy is likely to come unstuck, and indeed appears to be doing so.

The second hand market is a funny one with GW stuff.  The prices basically track the new stuff.  Now I don?t know if this means GW are right that people are prepared to pay whatever they charge, or whether people have the impression that GW is so expensive that e-Bay must be cheaper, no matter what, with the result that GW lose out on those sales.

Really, I think one of the more intangible drawbacks of GW?s strategy is the sheer amount of bad feeling it leaves amongst their customers.  In terms of bitching per ? earned, GW must be up their with the best of them, which seems a rather precarious way of running a business.
