Quote (Evil and Chaos @ 24 May 2006 (15:23)) | Quote (BlackLegion @ 24 May 2006 (14:11)) | If it is so similar to the Demolisher Cannon, then give the Bio-Cannon 45cm AP3+/AT4+, Ignore Cover |
I'd give it AT 3+, but other than that it looks good. | No, It'd be AT 4+. Same as the Demolisher. The Demolisher is AP 3+/AT 4+ Ignore Cover. It's got the same strength, blast template and better AP value. Plus having the advantages of being ordinance in 40K (Not enough of a difference to really matter in Epic). And yeah, I'd love to see it move to that. That'd fit with the way that it's written in 40K and cut back a bit on the macroweapon levels of the list. It might be too accurate for people to like, but I think it'd fit just fine. It's got a big AoE blast, so it's easy to hit with even if you're not a great shot, and it does plenty of damage so it's likely to cause lots of wounds if you do connect. Put them together and you get a nice to-hit number. But, much like the battlecannon and demolisher, it's not going to instantly wipe-out entire squads without any trouble at all. Most of the MW attacks are insanely powerful things, like plasma-cannons physically larger then tanks.

We are not limited to strictly what FW produces and their stat lines in determining what we want Epic stuff to do.
There is plenty of precedent for varying weaponry, not only in the previous editions of SM/TL/E40K but in the simple fact that smaller Nids have a wide variety of biomorphs available.

I'd actually fairly well expect that weapons carried by different creatures would be different strengths really. They are in 40K and it fits with the army. After all, a huge Carnifex is gonna be able to handle recoil and weight of much larger versions of 'common' weaponry then normal brood creatures will! It's like a tank compared to infantry. Both carry machine-guns. But the tank's will usually be in the 12mm range while the infantry is rarely more then 9mm or so. Even if they're otherwise virtually identicle the tank is gonna have more damaging power.
I'm just wondering about why the Bio-Cannon is so good. Under the ATII rules it was only about as good as Turbolasers were (having better chance to penetrate the enemy but worse fire rate). I'm just currious as to why it became MW? I guess it just feels odd for virtually all of the non-melee weapons the Tyranids carry to count as MW to me. Since they're supposed to be a fairly bad shooty army. Arguably TLDs are better then it is (well, not arguably, they ARE better then it is right now) I'm just wondering about the reasoning behind the change.

Again, I think it's down to lack of models being compensated for by better rules...
I could see Harridans and Barbed Hierophants having stronger bio-cannons than Barbed Hierodules.

Quote (Hena @ 25 May 2006 (06:48)) | But the current bio cannon is similar to old. It has worse rate of fire than turbolaser and it penetrates better.
In most armies people have tried to be consistent. So that if the weapon has same name, the stats should be same as well. | I understand this one. But how does 'penetrates better, fires slower' translate from 4x AP 5+/AT 3+ to MW 5+? That seems like an odd change to me. I could see doing something like 2x AP 4+/AT 2+ or even just AP 4+/AT 2+. It just seems strange, in comparison to other weapons which are of similar power. I do get the whole unification of army lists bit, and it's probably a good thing over all, this was just one of those items which strikes me as odd. There're a few others out there as well, but only a few.
