Its not packing the tables that keeps you in business...

..its packing the register....

Too true. This is the same issue I have at work. We have a creative department that believe cost is of no issue as long as you win industry awards for your design. We are trying to help them understand that the awards do not pay the bills. ?:D

Oh well, the world does need it's pound of flesh. ?

Hi!

That kind of attitude drives me insane.

I rather have my register full than any silly award. As you say those dont pay the bills. ?:;):

My most favorite example is the Oscars. How many people have won a "Best Actor" award and then went off into some black hole? Then you have people like Jimmy Stewart who never was given one (I think they finaly gave him a lifetime achievement or some such) and yet look at his success.

Give me the money anyday.

I grew up in the shadow of my FLGS.  It's been the only game in town for about thirty years, I know the owners, used to shop there as a kid (drug about by my much-older-than-me sister).  There were a few other ventures that tried to get running, but none of them lasted more than two or three years.

Sadly, my FLGS has changed -- they say in response to the market.  No more GHQ microarmor, no more cool one-off games, very little GW outside the Unholy Trinity of 40k/WHFB/LOTR.  These days, it's Clicky stuff and CCGs all over.  About a third of the shop is devoted entirely to comic books.

So while I'd love to shop there more and give them my patronage, there just isn't anything there for me.  I still go in and browse, and occassionally buy a cool Reaper mini out of loyalty, but it isn't the same.  The Internet is my illicit lover now.

I am lucky in that there are two gaming stores nearby, something not very common in Finland. I buy from them whatever I can simply because that way I don't have to wait for a shipment to arrive.

However, I have no qualms about buying from the net and often do so, although it has been more difficult lately. I don't know what trade dispute there is between USA and EU (again) but the customs has been remarkably active in snatching shipments cominng from USA. The VAT and duty fees are terrible.
