Which really honks me off because I have a spiffy drop-pod army that I got cheap off a former GW employee. ?I'd love to have the actual pods to go with it, but I'm not spending $400 on FW models to do it...

Hey Neal I just emailed you the plans off of the french GW site. ?It is the best scratch built drop pod I have seen.

If no knows what I am talking about, I can post them here. ?The original link was given on Table Top Games website a month or so ago.

Question: has Chaos in 40k moved away from cultist-type armies? ?I'm not overly familiar with the current 40k scene so I'm not sure.

Short answers: yes
Chaos armies are mainly Chaos Space Marines varients (and have been since the 2nd Ed 40k codex was released, like 10 years ago).

That said, I think that Lost and the Damned (a sort-of cultist list) from the Eye of Terror codex is also popular for those who like to convert. However, I think far more people play the CSMs than LoD.

That may be true. But then Codex Eye Of Terror came out AFTER Codex:CSM and therefore if anything should be even more official!!

And also Alpha Legion have cultists even just looking at Codex:CSM.

So cultists are definitely a 100% official part of GW 40k Chaos.

Cheers

James

So GW left Chaos in Chaos.

Seems somehow appropriate for Chaos don't you think?  :p

Sorry, just hit me funny.

Oh, I wasn't speaking to the "official-ness" of the LoD list, just to the relative popularity (as measured by number of players). Certainly, in 40k both CSMs and LoD are tourney legal (unless the Eye of Terror lists have been blacklisted, which I guess is possible).

You are right, cultists are 100% offical in 40k, they just aren't the bulk of the chaos forces as seen in tourneys (which is what I understood the question to be about).

Aside:
I have some other lingering questions about the upcoming epic CSM release. I assume that the tanks the SG will release will be the semi-unreleased ones from E:40k. BUT, those don't match the 40k tanks anymore. They went to all the effort of making new rhinos and land raiders for the E:A rulebook army, but the chaos stuff that they sell won't match (scale or style). Likewise, their aren't models for the fighter and bomber (they are the ones from BFG, right? - not the Tzeench demon flyers?). Nor is there a Chaos warhound or reaver titan.

So, it seems like a pretty arbitrary line to draw that discludes the epic LoD list but includes the epic CSM list.

CSM will have the older style Epic 40k Rhino, Land Raider and Predator. ?FW makes the Helltalon and technically there isn't a model for the Swiftdeath (though I would use the FW Hellblade). ?No there is not a Warhound or reaver so those would need to be converted. ?Also there aren't models for Raptors, Thousand Sons, Obliterators, Defiler, Decimator and Deathwheel.

There aren't models for the Land transport, Defiler and Plague Zombies in the L&D list. ?Everyting else is available of easily substituted (like Ogryn for Big Mutants).

Audrey:  Thanks.  I'm still hoping for something easier to do than that.  I could probably make 4 or 5 for $15 in supplies, but I'd rather spend my time and effort painting than creating something from scratch.

Still, I might end up building them anyway just because I'm tired of the "GW is planning to make one" bit from the GW employees.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but with regards to the "official fluff" I really do seem to recall even recently seeing a note to the effect of you might have a grand total of *1* chaos marine per world with the rest of the troops being either corrupted PDF or cultists.

Just from a fluff standpoint the L&D list makes more sense than pure a CSM list...

Hehe... oh the cognitive dissonance of it all...

Maybe it has to do with how the warp bends space and time, so that the same 50 CSMs can be in multiple places at once.

It sure seems like that applies to the loyalist SMs too, based on a comparison of their population according to the fluff and their population by number of models used by players.

To me the "official" thing is completely irrelevant, really.

This is the whole basis for the L4 rule:

Do What Works For You or DWWFY

GW has done a great job of brain washing us to thinking we can only play if it is somehow Official. Nonsense. If you and your friends agree, then it works.

Have Fun should be the focus of what ever we do.

Agreed. I'm way past the need for things to be "official". I guess that's what happens when one of your favorite games keeps getting the axe.  :D

Skimming through (phew!), some points....

RE: modelling for other games. GW has made a MAJOR effort to make a model for everything in the army lists, especially special characters. Even Lucius the Eternal is getting a model (just when I thought the EC were totally neglected because we like pink... :p) I am SURE there will be a plastic drop pod, Neal, absolutely positive, but I haven't heard anything about one. Why they didn't make it to coincide with the release of the command, veteran and termi squads is beyond me. But I find it inconceivable that a drop pod would be included in the codex without plans to make one - that goes against everything GW have been trying to achieve recently. While there's a lot of stuff that would still require conversion in the latest codexes and army books, by and large most of the gaps are slowly being filled - e.g. chaplain with jump pack.

WRT Epic, AFAIK, the "official" logic goes something along the lines that you don't want to make a list which REQUIRES people to buy OOP or convert models, that this gives those players with superior modelling or old collections (or use Ebay :O) some kind of tactical advantage (as opposed to the time-honoured method of giving those people with lots of money to spend on GW products some kind of tactical advantage... :p)

I've seen quite a few LATD armies around, not to mention I have a sizable Slaanesh LATD army myself (I was totalling it up and I've got somewhere in the region of 10,000 points at least of 40K chaos). But the really fun thing is that I've never seen two similar LATD armies - force composition and model-wise, there's just so much flexibility. Me, I like mutants and artillery (damn damn damn the 4th ed rules which mean I can't shell my own troops in combat!!).

But it is a bit of a fringe list, I have to admit, and one that tends to appeal to the slightly nutty conversion-mad gamer.

Perhaps there could be variations in the 'official' lists? Maybe 'Tournament' lists, 'Balanced' lists and 'House' lists? 'Balanced' being fully playtested and balanced, but not considered 'Tournament' for model reasons?

Lord =I=
