Bah wasted lunchtime.

Ok after ordering some Epic stuff online from GW, I decide to save myself some money and go to the local store.  I check online before hand and it mentions they do stock Specialist game stuff.

So I wonder down and walk into an empty store, no one there apart from staff, I have a quick look around and all I see is 40k, WHFB and LOR stuff.  Umm where is the specialist stuff.

At this point I decide to ask, and low and behold they don't really do it anymore.   They have specialist game rulebooks (no E:A I might add) but no models or anything..  The books were right at the back of the store where it would be very easy to miss them.

The next two things they say gets on my goat.

1 - "Do you play 40k?"  Did I ask about 40k, no not really, I actually asked about the Stormwind book.  Why are you trying to sell me 40k... I'm not a kiddie that you can try and persuade to take up 40k and abadon my Epic heritage...  "Do you only play Epic?" yes is there something wrong with this?

2 - "Why don't you buy it on eBay".. gah becuase it's your product you should stock it..  I know it's a limited run and all, but he didn't really have a clue about E:A at all.  I asked about marine character packs and the Swordwind book and got the same answer.  They did ask if I wanted to order it online in the store, which I declined.

Anyway I was very polite and didn't really bite back on any of his questions, but it just feels wrong.  Last time I was in a GW store (at least 12 years ago) it was busy, people didn't try to sell you stuff and there was a lot more choice of games.  :(

Oh well back to online buying and paying for postage then...

Most (UK) GW stores have an order point, where you can call MO get things delivered to the store for just one pound postage.

Aside from this, I have yet to find a store with anything beyond a few EA blisters, and this includes the larger stores in London.

Umm didn't realise they offered discounted delivery to their stores.  I might look into that.  I still have one option for looking around another local GW store, hopefully they might have some minatures.

The stores don't stock specialist games on a regular basis. Might stop the teenagers spending money on the latest 40k WHFB rehash  :p

They should have a specialist games catalogue so you can look up the codes and place a mail order. My local staff phone it through and it arrives when their regular order is sent.

Guess I'm lucky as the Manager likes most specialist games and the staff play most too.

Hi!

It speaks volumes when the same company that PRODUCES the game, does not support it or in many cases stock it.....

...such is life....

I'll play most specialist games except BFG (its just not Full Thrust before you ask  :D ) if someone sorts it out for me.

Epic I'll constantly challenge people or travel to play.

Another thing that annoyed me about the store was the style...  The GW stores I remember visiting had paint stained desks, post it's and for sales on the back doors (to staff area) and shelves stacked high with hundreds of blisters.  The games tables were a mismash of home built terrain and books for hills.

This one almost seemed to be sterile, all the boxes were stacked neatly, the walls were clean and had no "personalisation" the gaming desks had proper terrain and the painting area had covered desks...

Dunno just felt like the commercialism had taken over from the hobby..

Welcome to the brave, new (commercial) world.  :/

GW rule number 1: when someone asks about Epic do the sign of GW immediately to avoid Grognard possession, sing the hymns of marketing and purge him with 40k.

Guys, I think it is wishful thinking to expect the stores to stock a decent range of SG miniatures.  If they were to stock anything like a useful range then the space required wouldn?t be insignificant.  We all know that pushing SG games is far from GW's mind, so they are hardly going to turn over a significant portion of their stores to them.  So given they aren't going to stock a useful range, may as well leave it all as internet-only sales.

These are the days of the internet.  Who cares about GW store support?  If the staff don?t know anything about the games then that?s pretty lame but the staff I?ve spoken to do and they never try to push 40k stuff on me (only ?150 paint sets, ha!)

For what it's worth, when I went into the new GW Reading, I thought it looked great.  Obviously it was useless for Epic minis but that's not what I went in there for.

I don't think it is wishful thinking. Back in the E40k era, my local GW store (which wasn't all that big) stocked something for every GW game. Granted Warhammer, 40k and Epic occupied the lion's share of space, but the less popular games still had something in stock. It still boggles my mind why a company wouldn't want to promote all of its games. Surely, Primarch and I aren't the only consumers whose only GW game played is Epic.  ???
