On a related note, I don't really care what side of the ideological spectrum you stand on, you have to admit this is hard core. ?USMC's most recent Sergeant Major:

Finally, the insurgent, knowing the injured Marines had no way out, lobbed a grenade into the room. Kasal saw the grenade, and using his own body as a shield, leapt onto his fellow Marine as the grenade exploded.

That's after 7 bullet wounds.

Ooh-rah.

That is quite a story.  :o0

That man has the real stuff.

That kind of things seem to happen in war.

In WWII a Finnish soldier was caught in an ambush on a small bridge. A MG opened up (poor fire discipline on part of the Soviet patrol as he was the point man :p  ) and he fell to the small stream. The rest of his patrol withdrew and presumed him dead. Some time later he walked back to them using his rifle as a crutch. He had been hit to  the thigh seven times by the MG. Not a single bullet hit the thigh bone or an atrery.

This little happening is portrayed rather dramatically in the movie "Rukaj?rven Tie". I thought it was a "hero" moment added by the scriptwriters until I read about it from two different books.

Stories like that are amazing both in their scope and in how shockingly frequently it seems to happen.

I have read a few stories of people who were double Medal of Honor winners (the US's highest military honor).  There have only been a handful, but their stories are so phenomenal that if Hollywood made a movie about them you would find the films utterly preposterous.

The one that I always remember is the guy in the WWII island hopping campaign who*:

jumped on a grenade to save the rest of his squad and lived
jumped on a second grenade... and lived
fought firefight until they ran out of ammo
was the last man not unconscious and/or mortally wounded
fought hand to hand with a bayonet until he broke his rifle
fought with his entrenching tool (mini shovel) until he broke it
was shot in the leg breaking the bone
hammered his leg into the mud so he could stand up
fought more hand to hand using an engineering stake
and held out until reinforcements arrived
:80:

* I might have the order of events a little bit off, but does that really matter?

True, but there are also other heros. Sometimes a hero is the guy who just does the right thing because it is the right thing to do. Sometimes it is the guy who stands up for what is right when it is not popular, who remains loyal when the chips are down, who gets up every day and heads off to work when other things sound more fun. The person who loves their children, remains loyal to their spouse, provides for the family. Sometimes those are the heroes too.

Just a thought.
