6100pts Tau 4.4 Vs. IG / SM Psuedo BatRep

So at GamesDay LA, we managed to find a Epic-Scale table, and boy, was it Epic:  4x8 (Or probably 5x10) covered by dense cityscape.

My brother had his IG, and I had my Tau. A friend of mine, Gary, also had his Tau and his Ultramarines, and we had a third player, Mike, who had come spur-of-the moment and had brought no Epic.  A quick and hasty arrangment was made, where My brother would control his IG, Gary would controll the Ultramarines Dropforce, and Mike would control the 4 Warhounds and the 2 THawks full of Assualt Marines.  I would use pretty much all my Tau and some of Garys as well.  We managed to pit 6.1K against each other.  It was very noisy and we wanted to finish in 5 hours so we could do some shopping at the Forgeworld Area, so this batrep is by memory only.

Forces of the Imperium:
IG:
Tank Co w/ Hydra
Mech Co w/ Hydra and Hellhounds
Manticore Battery
Bassilisk Battery

Space Marines:
Assault Marines
Assault Marines W/ Captian
Thunderhawk

Assault Marines
Assault Marines W/ Captain
Thundarhawk

Dev Squad / 2x Dred
Dev Squad / 2x Dred
Dev Squad / 2x Dred
Dev Squad

Note:  All 4 Dev Squads Drop Podded in on T2

Legios Titan
Warhound
Warhound
Warhound
Warhound

Tau Forces:
Manta
2x Morays
3x Crisis Cadre w/ Stealth and Shas'El
2x AMHC w/ NetDrones and SkyRay
1x FW Cadre w/ Devilfish, Etherial, and ICHHs
1x Stingray Contingent w/ Skyray
2x Scorpionfish, 1 W/ SC
1 Markerlight Sentry Contingent

2x Barracuda Flights
2x TS A-X-01s

Highlights:
Turn 1: Gary Charged all 4 Warhounds @ my Manta, and got a few hits.
In return, Manta vaporized 1 Warhound and broke another.

Mike lost a fully-loaded THawk to a flight of Barracudas:  8x Assault
Marines pasted to the landscape.  He tried it again, second THawk
survived CAP from a 2nd flight of Barracudas, + 6 AA shots from ground forces, and
managed to land and rip apart one of my Hammerhead Cadres.

Turn 2:  Manta Vaporizes another Warhound.

I teleport in 6 markerlight Sentries, then later in the turn I do a
Co-Fire with my (New and Improved!) Scorpionfish and my other
Hammerhead Cadre against Patricks Mech Co.  He loses about 75%
strength and breaks hard.

Gary drop-pods in 4 (!) devastator detachments, who all scurry into
cover and two of which catch my FW Cadre still in transports and blow
them almost completly away.

I spent the rest of turn 2 and most of turn 3 trying to root these
Devs out of cover in my backfield.

Turn 3:  Manta Vaporizes a 3rd Warhound, and a Moray beats the 4th,
but not before it and the remains of my brothers Mech CO. break my
other Hammerhead Co.

More shooting at Devs.

Imps shot down one of my Morays.

Tau Airforce goes Apesh*t all over Mech Co, once we learn that its
the BTS objective.  Obliterated down to last man.

Crisis Cadre hops across the Table and takes the Imperial Blitz objective.

Tau win 2-0 in turn 3.

Not to shabby, we did 6100 points in 4 1/2 hours.

Observations:
I based this list off a 3500 point go-list I always have with my Tau, which included NO A-X-10s:  I added them only to fill points, and the performance they gave vs. the Morays pretty much justified that.  I think they accounted for a combined 250-300 points of kills.  A slight price drop and givig it back its 15cm AA, and it should fit in just fine with all the ther near-useless aircraft other armies are fielding.  Till then, I'll spend those points on ScF

The 2 Scorpionfish did really well, very deadly Vs. IG Inf, not so much Vs. Marine Devs in cover.

Gary has a tendancy to use bizzar tactics and army configurations, and this was no exception.

Wow, big game. Gota like those.

Interesting post game observations on the AX-1-0, should be good to see others comments. Present points make it look less than appealing for my games as well. Good to see I'm not the only one. The lack of AA you mention is also a curious point of discussion for the future I'm sure.

Glad to hear the ScrF made its mark on the game. Good. That thing looks to finally have some value.

Cheers for the battle! Too bad you guys couldn't take some pics, board sounds perty!

cheers,

1 Markerlight Sentry Contingent

@Heckler

Any comments on how this unit performed or did anything funky happen while using it?

Actually, yeah.  I teleported it in on the far right side beginning of turn two, in some rubble.  It marked the Mech Co when my ScF and one of my AMHCs did a Co-Fire.

After that it provided a ML "Threat-Bubble" that apparently had one of my opponents quite nervious; even after repeated statements by me that it could not move, challange or claim, he wanted to attack it, but his allies dissuaded him from that course of action.

I dont really think they "got" it, know what I mean.  It sits, it marks, thats it.

I have seen this effect as well, at least initially. Their "fear" of the unit will go down with repeated exposures...which is when we can really start to use it for extended play if you get my drift.

As I have said before, it's a fun unit to play around with, doesn't really give you anything unless you use it well, and there's nothing more annoying than to have this ML bubble in place and not have any GM shots to take advantage of it.

Thanx for the feedback.

@Heckler - ML Drones sound like they added a commical element to this game. I'm with Honda, once the novelty/newness wears off of the group a bit, it will be interesting to see if the unit/formation can make it in mainstream. I like the idea of using them with the ScF.

@TRC... What?

Actully, unlike GD '05, the line at the FW counter didnt go down, so I skipped it this year.  Did put in a bitz order with the regular GW guys though.

I now have an order with another Orca (ScF material) and some sentry drones OTW.

In my wanderings around the FW area I noted a Epic scale FW Thunderhawk, on display like, so it seems someone at FW is still working on Epic, though I am still discouraged by the '06 catalog not having any Epic items inside.  :(

I also managed to drop and then step on a stand of Stealthsuits.  That sick feeling you get as it crunches under your shoe... takes a while to go away.

:( I thought all 6mm wargamers developed cat like reflexs to spring away from the slightest odd prick of pressure on the feet!

I solved my stinginess to buy stealthsuits by using empty scenicfied basis with the odd bit of building and 'hint' of something there (odd bit of model fixed in). However like many things they await finishing and painting :(
