Hey guys, i came back from my local store and someone was telling me how a nid fleet player came in (for a tournament) with 2 hive ships each over 400pts and 12 escorts. Doesn't sound tooo bad right? but each escort had 2 sporcysts (2 shields!!!) and the hive ships had 6!!!! is this even possible???
I've read the rules for tyranid fleet construction and and see the extra spore cysts upgrades but they look to me like they are campaign based rules, not for tournament play.

If I remember correctly the answer is that you can buy them for one off games and tournaments, as well as them being campaign based rewards.
In the group I played with we also ditched the maximum number of refits for campaigns, we said that number represented the maximum number you can buy, however you can get more though refits (since other races weren't restricted in the number or refits a ship could have.

Yes, there is a note in there somewhere about being able to buy them for one-off games, at 10-15 points each if memory serves.

Yep it's possible.
+1 add. Spore Cysts per 10p.
Max. +2 on capitals, max. +1 on escorts (though I wouldn't give them one, since you get another escorts for two spores).
