Hi all,
Couple of questions.
1 - Do all Epic models now have to be mounted on a base? I've noticed that a lot of models even super heavy tanks are mounted.
2 - What does everyone use for bases? I was thinking of 1mm or 2mm plastic cut to size but cannot find any on the high street. Any suggestions of an online location to get some?
3 - Cheap alternate to GW flocking? Anyone got any suppliers they'd like to recommend?
4 - Premade, does anyone know if you can get premade ones done? I think I saw some at Darkrealms but I can't find them now.
Thanks
Rob

1 - No, only infantry units have to be mounted. 2 - 2mm plasticard in the past, since recently pre-made mdf bases. 3 - Just check for the usual miniature railroad hobby stuff. 4 - Sure, I got mine from Principles of War (UK) - http://www.principlesofwar.com/

For what it's worth, here are some answers:
1. Vehicles don't need to be based. I know a lot of people like to base them and I agree that they do look good with bases painted, flocked, etc, but I prefer to leave my vehicles unbased for two reasons: 1. I don't have to worry about the base not matching a gaming table and 2. I'd rather spend the time painting more minis.
2. Just about everything I have is based on GW bases. I do have some Dreads mounted on pennies. Some gamers use washers. A few months ago someone posted a link to a company that sells plastic bingo chips dirt cheap.
3. Again, a few months ago someone posted a link for a company that sells flock, which I believe was reasonably priced. Perhaps other members can help. If you're going for a rubble/rocky look, you can use sand and paint it.
4. Premade, I'm not quite sure what you mean by this, but I believe DRM sells (will be selling) textured bases.
Is this any help?

Can confirm the DRM rumour, bases with terrain will be produced. And try sand and cat litter (Fullers earth type, based on clay) (UNUSED!) for gravel and stones and rubble.

LOL yeah we do but not young enough to need a cat litter tray!
I'll check out the company recommended by Morg and on the base from Netepic said he had a few floating around as well.
Cheers all.

I went for a desert theme for my army and found that just sand of the right colour from a hardware store looks good. For added bits you could add little stones too. Nice and easy, no painting required.

For good basing stuff try here.
I bought a summer box and the results can be seen on my Tau stuff ?here . (aircaste page is empty at the moment as I've yet to take the photo's!)
All the bases where using the stuff in the summer box without any painting. Just glued on and varnished so its very simple!

Along the same lines as bases and flock does anyone know where I can pick up cheap flying bases? I've got my eye on some on ebay but not sure how much they will go for.

If you can find it in your area I can't recommend highly enough the "fine white pumice" by Vallejo.
It's about 3/4's of the way down the page here:
Pumice
Not only can you just mix a couple of drops of whatever colour you want your base to be straight into the mix but by the time it dries it seems to effectively give a bond between the base and the miniature almost as strong as super-glue does.

No bases on vehicles for me. Looks great for display, not so great on the gaming table IMO. I started off basing vehicles but then ripped them all off. The exception is flying bases for eldar vehicles (just a big bag from GW does an army).
For flock I use Woodland Scenics (big brand, worldwide availability). Mix of standard earth and grass flock.

What is the consensus on base shape for infantry units?
I've read the rulebook, and was just wondering if most people used the basic strips or if people tried the round base approach. I saw someone who had done a SM army on round bases and it looked pretty good. So far I've managed to talk myself out of starting epic, but only because there isn't an official list for my Daemonhunter army (although Lord Inquisitor's Task Force is looking really good!)
