Well, sometimes you have to fly through a cloud or two on the way to the LZ, and sometimes the LZ is really dusty. Also, some of the bugs on those planets are pretty big, so when they splat on the windshield, they pretty much cover the entire thing.
I think the better question would be, "how do they keep the wiper fluid from freezing to the glass while in the vacuum of space?"

Quote (Hena @ 15 Mar. 2006 (15:50)) | I was thinking how to keep the wipers from bursting into flames when coming through atmosphere really . | Maybe they're made of heat-resistant ceramic.

Once it makes into a planet's atmosphere ... they are subject to the weather like any other aircraft ... like rain, snow, bugs, etc. ... Had a lot of hours as cargo(!), in a Huey and Blackhawk ...

If you can do interstellar travel ... you can figure out a way to make wipers survivable !

Right, enough of these petty interpretations of the secrets of the Adeptus! (Wrath, etc.) If you really must now, they would never survive am atmospheric drop. Once the high temperature part of the drop is over, one of the crew opens a hatch just ahead of the cockpit and fits them on. By the third or fourth scout (why waste full marines?) the job is usually done, and the wipers can be tested on the breakfast thrown up by said scouts in the process.
In space, the occasionally bits of Nid can be really messy. As wipers would not function due to the low pressure and low temperatures (high, if on the sunny side of things) and would have lubrication issues, a marine (no scouts this time, as only the marines seem to have enclosed helmets) is popped out of the Thunderhawk with a scraper to wipe off the mess, full polish for extra.
