Hi Stormseer,
Quote (stormseer @ 02 Mar. 2006 (19:21)) | The Forever War is an amazing book in my opinion, very different from much of your run of the mill sci-fi around these days. |
I see what you're saying, but Drake has much less of a social commentary in his books... they're stories by soldiers for soldiers... different feel.
Quote (stormseer @ 02 Mar. 2006 (19:21)) | At the moment I'm reading Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard which isn't exactly military SF (or great literature!), but is a great adventure story, nice and easy to read, with plenty of action. I'm enjoying it so far- give it a go if you have the time (its over 1000pgs)! Anyone else read it? Cheers, ~Gabe. |
I've read most of L. Ron Hubbard's "sci-fi" books and didn't think too much of any of them.
Knowing that Hubbard thinks that his reading public are patsies waiting for him to manipulate them doesn't endear him or his books to me.
They work out OK as cheap entertainment, but not much more.
And as MiniTJ wrote, the movie was just plain awful.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

You are right on M/S! Drake writes about soldiers soldiering and does it very well. He's also a historian ... So my attraction to his work is obvious ! Soldiering, Military History, Sci-Fi ... that's pretty much my "thing" !

Harry Turtledove has done some amazing books.
Not generally Military SciFi, his World war series deals with an advanced Alien Race trying to conquer Earth in the middle of WWII. Very good books indeed.
He's also done another series that has the Confederates winning the American Civil War - que WWI in America... I won't spoil it for anyone who's not read them.

Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. | Oh, I can't argue with that Maksim, 'cheap entertainment' sums up the book nicely! - anyone looking for profound moral disussions or beautifully crafted stories should look elsewhere....

Hi Deadlock,
I read the Battletech stuff back in the 1980s and stopped after a few novels. The ones I read were very good, but there were just too many of them after a time...
Keith has a lot of talent though!
Shabbat Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Keith Jr has written many sci-fi books, including a Bolo book, the Foreign Legion trilogy and indeed the Heritage series is his under a pseudonym
